Isaiah Martinez won the Nov. 4 @ #5 Missouri L, 17-20 157-pound title at 2014 Midlands and the 165-pound bracket at 2016 Midlands. *Isaiah Martinez is seeking to become the first Illini to win three Midlands titles. Burroughs defeated Martinez by scores of 4-1 and 11-1. The opening bout of the series saw all outscoring by way of step-outs, Burroughs earning four to Martinez’s one. In the second match, Martinez drew first blood by forcing a Burroughs step out, but the defending World Champion countered with an 11-0 run to win by tech fall and clinch the series. By winning the 74kg series, Burroughs will again represent the United States at World Championships. The 2018 World Championships will be held October 20-28 in Budapest, Hungary. Martinez reached the Final X match-up with Burroughs with sweeps of both the U.S. Open and the World Team Trials Challenge Tournament. Martinez held his opponents scoreless through each of his five U.S. Open matches, outscoring them 49-0. As the winner of the U.S. Open, Martinez automatically advanced to the Challenge Tournament best-of-three final where he swept Nazar Kulchytskyy with a pair of 13-2 victories.

    2016-2017 ANNUAL REPORT 09/01/16-08/31/17 2017 WORLD MEDALISTS 2017 WORLD CHAMPIONS USA Wrestling capped an incredible 2016-17 season with historic performances at the Cadet, Junior, U23, and Senior World Championships. Team USA captured an all-time record THIRTY TWO medals at these events, including fourteen individual World Champions. Women’s Freestyle finished 2nd in the team race at the Senior World Championships, with Junior Men’s Freestyle and Senior Men’s Freestyle both claiming the #1 spot. USA Wrestling launches the “No Missed Meals” campaign with Chobani, a program JAN 2017 geared towards youth wrestlers, coaches, and parents about the importance of proper nutrition and de-emphasizing weight cutting. Amid intense geo-political animosity, Men’s Freestyle travels to FEB 2017 Kermanshah, Iran to compete in the World Cup. The Iranians were incredibly welcoming and hospitable during our stay.
