Division I Wrestling Championships Records Book DIVISION I WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIPS RECORDS BOOK 2018 Championships 2 History 14 Team Finishes 28 All-Time Team Results 34 2018 CHAMPIONSHIPS Penn State edges Ohio State for seventh team title in eight years: It might have been the most exciting 15 seconds in NCAA Wrestling Championship his- tory. Ohio State’s Myles Martin, a champion in 2016 with a win over Penn State’s Bo Nickal, a freshman at the time, fired a powerful double-leg shot late in the first period of the 184-pound national championship match. Nickal (31-0), a national champion in 2017, flipped Martin to his back with a high-flyer and, with 31 seconds left, scored a monumental pin. The pin put the Nittany Lions up by 12½ points and wrapped up a seventh NCAA team title in eight years. Penn State totaled 141½ points to Ohio State’s 134½ points. Three of Nickal’s teammates – Zain Retherford, Jason Nolf, and Vincenzo Joseph — also won individual honors and three others finished among the top eight. Retherford finished his career with 94-straight wins and a third national title, beating Lock Haven’s Ronnie Perry, 6-2, in the 149-pound final. The first of five Penn State finalists, Retherford’s win cut the Buckeye deficit to two points. A match later, junior Nolf (26-1) cruised by North Carolina State’s Hayden Hidlay and the Nittany Lions regained the lead over their Big Ten brethren 132½ to 130½. Iowa finished a distant third with 97 points. Michigan (80) and North Carolina State (80) rounded out the top five. The Penn State train kept rolling when Joseph, just a sophomore, beat Illinois’ Isaiah Martinez in the 165-pound final for the second consecutive season. Martinez, with just three career losses, was a four-time finalist with titles as a freshman and sophomore. Arizona State sophomore Zahid Valencia (32-0) out-wrestled Penn State’s Mark Hall for the 174-pound title and gave Ohio State a fighting chance heading into the 184-pound clash between Nickal and Martin. The three days in Cleveland ended with the highly-anticipated Kyle Snyder-Adam Coon match at 285 pounds. Snyder, an Olympic and world champion, scored a third period takedown that provided the difference in a 3-2 victory. For the first time since 1947 there were two true freshman champions. Iowa’s Spencer Lee (22-2) dominated the field at 125 pounds, beating Rutgers’ Nick Suriano in the final. The Pennsylvania native already owned a Junior World Championship in freestyle before heading to Iowa. Cornell’s Yianni Diakomihalis capped a 34-1 rookie campaign with a highlight-reel counter-to-cradle finish in the third period to beat Wyoming senior Bryce Meredith at 141 pounds. Seth Gross became South Dakota State’s first NCAA champion in Division I, beating Michigan’s Stevan Micic, 13-8, in the 133-pound final. Gross (29-1) lost in the 2017 final. North Carolina State’s Michael Macchiavello (22-3) scored a takedown in the final 16 seconds to beat Virginia Tech’s Jared Haught for top honors at 197 pounds. When the final session started Ohio State led Penn State 130½ to 124½. The Buckeyes made a run during Saturday’s first session, scoring 21 points behind six All-Americans, but Penn State’s four champions thwarted the Buckeye’s efforts to take the trophy back to Columbus. Ohio State totaled eight All- Americans. 2018 Championships 2 35. Drexel 8 2018 TEAM STANDINGS 36. Edinboro 7 Navy 1. Penn St. 141½ 38. Central Mich. 6½ 2. Ohio St. 133½ Northern Colo. 3. Iowa 97 40. DIVISION I WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIPS RECORDS BOOK 2016 Championships 2 History 14 Team Finishes 28 All-Time Team Results 34 2016 CHAMPIONSHIPS Penn State, Oklahoma State's Dieringer highlight final day of NCAA Championships at Madison Square Garden: March 19 was a night of firsts, seconds, and thirds inside Madison Square Garden. And it ended in dramatic fashion. In the 2016 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships’ final match after three days of grueling competition inside a legendary arena, Ohio State’s Kyle Snyder used an ankle-pick with eight seconds left to force overtime with North Carolina State’s Nick Gwiazdowski, then score another takedown 15 seconds into the first extra session to end the Wolfpack senior’s 88-match winning streak. Gwiazdowski’s bid for a third title was thwarted, but another senior, Oklahoma State’s Alex Dieringer, finished his career with 82 straight victories and a third national title. Illinois’ Isaiah Martinez won his second championship at 157 pounds. Gabe Dean, a junior for Cornell, picked up his second gold. Missouri’s multi-talented J’den Cox claimed his second in three years. Penn State’s Nico Megaludis and Cornell’s Nahshon Garrett, after long and successful careers, finished in style with their first titles. Oklahoma State’s Dean Heil and Penn State’s Zain Retherford, both sophomores, claimed championship number one, as did Snyder. And underdog Myles Martin, an Ohio State freshman from nearby Penns Grove, New Jersey, had the highlight of the night in beating Penn State’s Bo Nickal. Locked up, both men ready to strike, Nickal tried to turn an ankle-pick into two.

From: Pat Donghia [email protected] Subject: Bo Nickal Wins the Hodge! Date: April 1, 2019 at 12:34 PM To: undisclosed-recipients:; Bo Nickal Wins the Hodge! Three-time NCAA Champion wins wrestling’s Heisman UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.; April 1, 2019 – (Portion of release, including quotes, courtesy Bryan Van Kley, WIN Magazine) Penn State Nittany Lion wrestler Bo Nickal (Allen, Texas) has won the WIN Magazine/Culture House Dan Hodge Trophy, presented annually to the top collegiate wrestler in the nation by ASICS. The Hodge Trophy has been awarded since 1995. The three-time NCAA champion finished first in the voting, just ahead of teammate Jason Nolf (Yatesboro, Pa.). A Nittany Lion has now won the last three Hodge Trophy awards. Nickal joins former Nittany Lion greats Zain Retherford and David Taylor, who each claimed two Hodge Trophy honors, and former Lion stand-out Kerry McCoy, who won the honor in 1997, as Penn State recipients. In all, Penn State now has four different individuals who have won the honor six times. The Nittany Lion won his third NCAA championship on March 23, defeating Kollin Moore of Ohio State. The 5-1 finals victory at 197 pounds was Nickal’s 30th of an undefeated senior campaign that included 18 pins, three tech falls and six major decisions. In a year that featured four outstanding finalists for the award, known as “wrestling’s Heisman Trophy,” Nickal won the honor over a senior teammate Jason Nolf, also a three-time NCAA champ who had very similar stats as Nickal. The other two Hodge finalists were Rutgers’ senior Anthony Ashnault and Cornell sophomore two-time champ Yianni Diakomihalis, who won NCAA championships at 149 and 141 pounds, respectively.
