Division I Wrestling Championships Records Book DIVISION I WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIPS RECORDS BOOK 2015 Championships 2 History 14 Team Finishes 28 All-Time Team Results 34 2015 CHAMPIONSHIPS HIGHLIGHTS Logan Stieber joined an exclusive club at the 2015 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships. The senior 141-pounder for Ohio State beat Edinboro’s Mitchell Port, 11-5, on March 21 to win a fourth national title and become just the fourth wrestler in NCAA history to accomplish that feat. “This is something I have dreamed about since I came to Ohio State,” said Stieber, who finished 29-0 this season and a 119-3 career for the Buckeyes. “To finally do it is unbelievable.” Two slick first-period takedowns built a small cushion. Stieber scored another takedown and took a 7-2 lead and 2:38 of riding time to the final two minutes of his collegiate career. A double-leg midway through the third made it 10-2. Port (36-2), also a senior, made one last push by scoring a late takedown, but it was too little, too late as the capacity crowd at Scottrade Center in St. Louis came to its feet and gave Stieber a standing ovation. Following the tournament the Outstanding Wrestler Award also belonged to Stieber. Stieber is the leader of a Buckeye squad that claimed the program’s first team title. Ohio State totaled 102 points, 16 more than second place Iowa. Edinboro, at 75.5, finished a program-best third, with Missouri, Cornell and Penn State rounding out the top six. Stieber’s teammate, freshman Nathan Tomasello, opened his collegiate career with a national title at 125 pounds. Tomasello thwarted West Virginia fresh- man Zeke Moisey’s attempt to become the first unseeded wrestler to claim an NCAA crown since Oklahoma State’s Mark Branch in 1994. Moisey (31-13) shocked the Scottrade Center crowd Friday evening when he cradled and pinned Iowa’s Thomas Gilman in 52 seconds. Moisey, a freshman from Northhampton, Pennsylvania, let it fly in the finals against Tomasello, but came out on the short end of a 9-5 score. Iowa State senior Kyven Gadson finished in style. He fought off a single-leg attack by Ohio State freshman Kyle Snyder and countered with a sweet toss for a pin at 4:24 of the 197-pound final. Gadson’s father, Willie, was a two-time All-American (1975 and 1976) for Iowa State. He died a day after Kyven won the 2013 Big 12 title. Oklahoma State junior Alex Dieringer won the 100th match of his career with a comfortable 14-7 decision of Indiana’s Taylor Walsh in the 165-pound final. Dieringer, 34-0 this season, was a champion at 157 pounds in 2014. North Carolina State junior Nick Gwiazdowski (35-0) joined Dieringer as a two-time champion. Gwiazdowski led early and held off a late charge to beat Michigan sophomore Adam Coon 7-6 in the 285-pound finals. Illinois rookie Isaiah Martinez (34-0) dominated Cornell’s Brian Realbuto 10-2 in the 157-pound title tilt. The first period included a handful of fantastic flurries, but in the end Martinez proved too much. Cornell’s second finalist, sophomore Gabe Dean, beat Lehigh’s Nathaniel Brown in the 184-pound final. A third-period takedown was the difference in a 6-2 victory for Dean (44-2). Video review won the day at 174 pounds. Penn State’s Matt Brown and Pittsburgh’s Tyler Wilps wrestled a wild seven minutes, then stood through a number of coaches challenges. The final 25 seconds included a takedown by Wilps (19-4) for a 4-3 lead, a stalling call on Wilps to tie it at 4-4, and apparently send it to overtime. Penn State head coach Cael Sanderson challenged the call and after a lengthy review that required multiple looks, Brown was awarded a point for a locked hands violation. The scoreboard read 5-4 and Brown (29-3), who lost in the finals in 2013, was awarded the win. The first bout of the night required extra wrestling as Missouri’s Drake Houdashelt and Edinboro’s David Habat, both seniors, went to overtime tied at 1-1 when Habat (36-3) lost his balance during a takedown attempt. Houdashelt pounced on the Fighting Scot and won 3-1. The Tiger senior, a three-time All- American, finished 37-1. Oklahoma junior Cody Brewer (22-1) put his No. 13 seed to bed with a finals victory against Iowa’s Cory Clark. Brewer had three major decisions, a pin and the decision against Clark for the week. The 2015 tournament drew an NCAA record 113,013 fans for the six sessions. 2015 Championships 2 2015 TEAM STANDINGS 1. Ohio St. 102 2. Iowa 84 3. Edinboro 75½ 4. Missouri 73½ 5. Cornell 71½ 6. DIVISION I WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIPS RECORDS BOOK 2016 Championships 2 History 14 Team Finishes 28 All-Time Team Results 34 2016 CHAMPIONSHIPS Penn State, Oklahoma State's Dieringer highlight final day of NCAA Championships at Madison Square Garden: March 19 was a night of firsts, seconds, and thirds inside Madison Square Garden. And it ended in dramatic fashion. In the 2016 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships’ final match after three days of grueling competition inside a legendary arena, Ohio State’s Kyle Snyder used an ankle-pick with eight seconds left to force overtime with North Carolina State’s Nick Gwiazdowski, then score another takedown 15 seconds into the first extra session to end the Wolfpack senior’s 88-match winning streak. Gwiazdowski’s bid for a third title was thwarted, but another senior, Oklahoma State’s Alex Dieringer, finished his career with 82 straight victories and a third national title. Illinois’ Isaiah Martinez won his second championship at 157 pounds. Gabe Dean, a junior for Cornell, picked up his second gold. Missouri’s multi-talented J’den Cox claimed his second in three years. Penn State’s Nico Megaludis and Cornell’s Nahshon Garrett, after long and successful careers, finished in style with their first titles. Oklahoma State’s Dean Heil and Penn State’s Zain Retherford, both sophomores, claimed championship number one, as did Snyder. And underdog Myles Martin, an Ohio State freshman from nearby Penns Grove, New Jersey, had the highlight of the night in beating Penn State’s Bo Nickal. Locked up, both men ready to strike, Nickal tried to turn an ankle-pick into two.

Three-time NCAA Champion wins wrestling’s Heisman UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.; April 1, 2019 – (Portion of release, including quotes, courtesy Bryan Van Kley, WIN Magazine) Penn State Nittany Lion wrestler Bo Nickal (Allen, Texas) has won the WIN Magazine/Culture House Dan Hodge Trophy, presented annually to the top collegiate wrestler in the nation by ASICS. The Hodge Trophy has been awarded since 1995. The three-time NCAA champion finished first in the voting, just ahead of teammate Jason Nolf (Yatesboro, Pa.). A Nittany Lion has now won the last three Hodge Trophy awards. Nickal joins former Nittany Lion greats Zain Retherford and David Taylor, who each claimed two Hodge Trophy honors, and former Lion stand-out Kerry McCoy, who won the honor in 1997, as Penn State recipients. In all, Penn State now has four different individuals who have won the honor six times. The Nittany Lion won his third NCAA championship on March 23, defeating Kollin Moore of Ohio State. The 5-1 finals victory at 197 pounds was Nickal’s 30th of an undefeated senior campaign that included 18 pins, three tech falls and six major decisions. In a year that featured four outstanding finalists for the award, known as “wrestling’s Heisman Trophy,” Nickal won the honor over a senior teammate Jason Nolf, also a three-time NCAA champ who had very similar stats as Nickal. The other two Hodge finalists were Rutgers’ senior Anthony Ashnault and Cornell sophomore two-time champ Yianni Diakomihalis, who won NCAA championships at 149 and 141 pounds, respectively.
