Appendix A National Schools & the one in Bridgend

James Hutchinson Jr. spent many years as the school master of the National School in Bridgend. So, what is a National School? Here is some of the information that we have collected. e-mail received 1/17/2005, Info [email protected]

Unfortunately there is not much documentation which clearly states where the Bridgend National School was. However, the information I did find is as follows: · Slaters Directory of 1880, states there was a National School opened in 1877, but does not state where. · Pigot’s Directory of 1830, states there was a National School. · There is an essay or local council document that discusses education in Bridgend. This does describe the National School, and where it was located. There is also a map at the back. The school was located at the top of Street, by what is now inland revenue offices. I am unable to tell you whether there is building there now. e-mail received 1/19/2005, Glamorgan Record Office GlamRO@.ac.uk

National schools were Anglican schools operated and funded by the 'National Society for the Education of the Poor in the Principles of the Established Church in England and '. The Society was established in 1810, and the schools continued to operate until the late-nineteenth/early-twentieth centuries.

The Glamorgan Record Office holds records of the National School at Bridgend, known as Bridgend Oldcastle. These records include a log-book for the mixed and infants classes for the years 1863-1884 (ref.: EM9/1), the period when your husband's ancestor would have been headmaster.

Log books were a daily record of school activities which the headteacher was required to keep. In the main, they note mundane details such as the absence of teachers and attendance levels, but they can also include detailed descriptions of local society. e-mail received 1/21/2005, Glamorgan Record Office [email protected]

According to colleagues at the Bridgend Reference Library, the Bridgend National School building is still standing. It no longer operates as a school, though, but has been converted into offices. e-mail received 1/21/2005, Sarah Duffield [email protected]

The National Society's archive has a file on the school, but its unlikely to contain any references to your ancestor as it is mainly concerned with the building not the people within in. The school correspondent tended to be the local incumbent rather than one of the teaching staff. Copyright © 2005 Mosaic Research and Project Management. All Rights Reserved

The "National" derived its name from the grand title of its founders "National Society for the education of the poor in accordance with the principles of the Established Church" - whew what a mouthful! no wonder it was thereafter known as the "National School".

The first National in Bridgend was established in 1822 and by 1824 82 boys and 131 girls were using the school. This first school was on land adjacent to Nolton Street and I have no photos in my collection of this building or pupils.

In 1859 the school outgrew the site at Nolton Street and a new one was built on Brackla Street. This continued in use until taken over by the County Council in 1910 and subsequently closed down about 1920. The building still stands today but in a very run- down condition.

We have not been able to locate an image of this building.

Appendix B James Hutchinson Jr & Barnstaple Devon

From the 1891 Census we learned that James had moved to Barnstaple Devonshire and had remarried. This Appendix presents whatever information we have on the life of James in Barnstaple and then raises the questions we don’t have answers to!

Overview

James Hutchinson, born Maesteg (Bridgend) Glamorgan and lived there through 1881, married Sarah Warren in the September Quarter of 1886 in Barnstaplei. We find Sarah already in Barnstaple (she’s from Crediton – as stated in the census entries) by about 1878.

What We Don’t Know

1. When/where did James die? I do not find him in freebmd … we know he died between 1891 and 1901 … 2. What church were they associated with so that I could look for his burial and MI? 3. What were “Quay House” and “Warren House” or any other lodgings that Sarah might have been involved with? We have not been able to pinpoint the address or obtain images.

Appendix C Siblings of Eleanor Hutchinson

As mentioned in the main report, Edgar Robert has already been discussed. This appendix focuses on the other siblings of Eleanor (the details of her are in the MATTHEWS write-up). Those left who believe lived to become adults are:

George James ~ Dec 1856, Bridgend Christening, 2 Jan 1857vii Georgina Ann ~ 3rd Qtr 1864, Bridgend GRO Birth Indexviii Charles F c. 1869 various censuses

We will pick up the story after 1881 as in 1881 their mother had just died and they were all living with their father at 22 Caroline Street, , Glamorgan. Though, George James lived with Frances Mary Hawkins (his aunt) in 1871.

Part of how the subsequent story was deciphered was a census that had Charles living with the widower of Georgina Ann and his aunt, Frances Hawkins and actually a child of his daughter Eleanor … so, quite a collection of the family was found!

George James

We lose him after 1881 … at that time he was a student for matriculation. Have not been able to find him in Wales or England in 1891

Charles F. Hutchinson, Bro in Law, 31, Stationers Traveller, Bridgend Glamorgan Han? Matthews, Niece, 13, Stoke Kensington

The family was not tracked past 1901.

Charles F.

We know that Charles was with his deceased sister’s family in Ilford in 1901. Obviously he was employed in a job like that of his father. With that we figured it would be easy to find him in 1891 … not so. He is not with his father, nor with any of his siblings.

APPENDIX D “The Farmers Arms” Maesteg

The Farmers Arms is picturedxiii to the left.

Farmers Arms was at 121 Commercial Street, Maesteg... though this street was actually called Bowrington Street until the late 1800s. Below are snippets of information that we received in response to our inquiries.

“In 1901, a relative was operating the Farmers Arms. It was located on Commercial Street in Maesteg. This is the main thoroughfare through the town. I was told while visiting Maesteg that Cwmdu was the same as Maesteg. On the 1901 census it is shown as the civil parish and is the ecclesiastical parish.”xiv

“The Farmers Arms used to be in Commercial Street Maesteg but closed some 25 years ago it's now the Crystal Palace a Chinese restaurant. There are a couple of books available about public house's in the Llynfi valley written by a local historian these are available in the local library in Maesteg which has a web site for you to make contact.”xv

“I found reference in the 1865 Webster's Directory of Ann Hutchinson, Beer Retailer at Maesteg. I therefore assume that she took over the running of the "Farmer's Arms" after her husbands death. There is also some information and a photograph in "The old parish public houses past and present" by John Lions. If you send me your address I could put this information in the post to you.

The Farmers Arms was at 121 Commercial Street from 1830 and closed in 1977/78.”xvi

“Up until the late 1970's early 1980's there was a Farmers Arms in Commercial Street, Maesteg (Previously Bowrington Street during the 1800's) I believe this area was part of Cwmdu Hamlet in the census returns. The building is still there (empty). There is a book of Maesteg pubs which was published by the Llynfi Valley Historical Society (Written by local historian John LYONS).”xvii Copyright © 2005 Mosaic Research and Project Management. APPENDIX E Siblings of James Hutchinson Jr.

While Jane and Elizabeth disappear from the family after the 1841 census, the remaining siblings all lived with their parents through 1861 and Sarah and Catherine were found living with their widowed mother in 1871. By the 1881 census, both parents are deceased and the family is dispersed.

Jane

Currently nothing more is known about Jane after we see her listed in the 1841 census!

Elizabeth

Currently nothing more is known about Elizabeth after we see her listed in the 1841 census!

Robert

Robert is one of the few siblings to remain in the area and be associated (that we know of) with the same church! So, this is the most documented of the siblings!

In 1871xix, Robert and family is in Maesteg 13 Albert Street, Llangynwyd, Maesteg, Cwmdu Robert Hutchenson, Head, Mar, 36, Carrier, Glamorgan, Maesteg Ann Hutchenson, Wife, Mar, 29, Carmartheon, Cross Hand David Hutchenson, Son, 5, Glam. There is a possibility for a marriage in 1875, a Sarah Hutchinson married unknown person (either John Tudor or Joseph Nicholas) in the December Quarter of 1875.xxvii

Looking at the 1881 censusxxviii, we appear to find both Sarah (she married John Tudor) and her younger sister Sarah Ann!

This is consistent with an 1880 Directoryxxix listing: Inns & Public Houses Horse & Groom, John Tudor, Maesteg

Now, in 1891, they are still at 75 Commercial Street and it is labeled “Horse & Groom.” 75 Commercial Street, Cwmdu, Maesteg “Horse and Groom” John Tudor, Head, M, 52, Licensed Victuallers, Pembroke Roach Sarah Tudor, Wife, M, 54, Glamorgan Maesteg Halwin F Tudor, Son, 13, Glamorgan Maesteg Sarah A Hutchinson, Step Daur, S, 33, Barmaid, Glamorgan Maesteg Elizabeth McCarty, Serv, S, 15, General Servant, Glamorgan Maesteg

We were unable to locate the family in the 1901 census. We now have an explanation for part of this. According to the Burials listed for Llangynwydxxx, these are some of the Tudor baptisms and burials.

There are two TUDOR baptisms in Llangynwyd, Both of John (Inn Keeper) and Sarah: Walwyn Frederic 25 Nov 1877 Commercial St., Maesteg Irene Jane 12 May 1880 Commercial St. Maesteg Copyright © 2005 Mosaic Research and Project Management. All Rights Reserved

There are 3 TUDOR burials in Llangynwyd: Irene Jane 7 May 1881 Horse & Groom aged 14m Jane 4 Sep 1874 Commercial St., 48 (Don’t know who this is!xxxi) John 13 Nov 1891 Horse & Groom, 53

If we go backwards, we find John in 1871 as a Boarder and he appears to be a Police Constable (has him from Roach Pembroke and 32 years old … all consistent) living at the Police Station in Michaelston Super Avon.xxxii

So, John dies the same year as the census. What happens to Sarah?

We find the following listing in an 1895 Directoryxxxiii Horse & Groom, Mrs. Sarah Tudor, 75 Commercial St., Maesteg , R.S.O. Glamorganshire

We originally could not find son Sarah or son, Walwyn, in 1901! We then had a suspicion that maybe www.ancestry.com hadn’t indexed this part of Wales yet for 1901. Let’s see what this site, http://www.1901census.nationalarchives.gov.uk/ has … well, well, well … look what we found!

Walwyn Tudor 23 Glamorgan Maesteg Glamorgan Cwmdu Surveyor And Architect Sarah Tudor 64 Glamorgan Maesteg Glamorgan Cwmdu Temperence Hotel Keeper

So, they are both alive and well and probably living together. Wonder if Sarah is still at the “Horse & Groom?” Also, the occupation of Walwyn is interesting as an aunt’s husband, William Ynyr Davies, had the same trade.

Some answers … 1901 Censusxxxiv 4 Talbot Street, Cwmdu, Llangynwyd Sarah Tudor, Head, Wid, 64, Temperance Hotel Keeper (Coffee House) Walwyn F Tudor, Son, S, 23, Surveyor & Architect John Williams, Boarder, S, 23, Ministerial Student Kate White, Servant, S, 18, General Servant Gladys Grundle, Servant, S, 15, Housemaid

In fact, a 1900 Business Directoryxxxv has an advertisement for her establishment.

We also find a 1903 listing and it does not state who the proprietor is and it has:

She does not appear to be buried with her husband though she remained in Maesteg for the rest of her life. We do find the following entry that would be about right as she would have been 74 in 1911.

William

We lose track of William by 1871. He’s not living with his mother nor any of his siblings!

Hannah

In 1871 we found a Sarah Ann Hutchinson living with a Hannah Davies & family (see Sarah Ann for 1871 Census info). Well Sarah Ann had an older sister, Hannah … so, could this Davies family be her sister’s family. Sarah Ann moved to another sisters’ in 1881xxxvii and we can find this Davies family.

We find a partial entry for the marriage of William … though no female “Hannah” is currently includedxxxviii!

Catherine It appears that Catherine married in 1872. It appears that in the June Quarter 1872, she married John Hopkin Thomas or Henry Wilkinsxliii Since the wife of Henry Wilkins is Elizabeth in 1881, it seems likely that Catherine married John Hopkin Thomas.

The only problem is that the 1881 census entry below lists a William Vaughan as a Father in Law … oops … that would be a problem since James Hutchinson was deceased in 1862!!! Also, this Catherine is listed as 5 years older than the age we expect for Catherine Hutchinson, though, Newton is where she last lived with her mother and she was born in Llangynwyd/Maesteg!?!?!

So, the family shown below may or may not be the correct family.

The 1881 Census shows the following familyxliv: Household:

David

In 1871xlvi it looks like David is living in Aberdare as a boarder.

In 1881 it looks like David has married and is living in England! If you wonder how we can make this leap … partially it is because David was not actually a common first name at this time and then a David Hutchinson born Llangynwyd and/or Maesteg was pretty much one of a kind!

Charles

He is living with Brother Robert in 1871 (in Maesteg) so see Robert’s information for this information. We seem to lose track of him after this though.

Ah ha, we find him in 1901lv! A few years have passed … Charles Hutchinson 48 Glam Maesteg Glamorganshire Roath Plate Mill Rod Turner He is in Roath at 147 Moorland Road Charles Hutchinson, head, M, 48, Plate Mill Rod Turner, Glam Maesteg Louiza Hutchinson, wife, M, 47, London

Okay … so we learn that he is married to someone from London in 1901. Let’s see if we can work backwards to when we last saw him in 1871.

Using the information on his newly found wife, we search in 1891lvi and find the family in Yorkshire!!! 52 Laing St, Eston, Yorkshire Charles Hutchinson, Head, M, 38, Steel Rail Roll Turner, Glamorganshire, Maesteg Louisa Hutchinson, wife, M, 36, London

Still cannot find him in 1881 … jeesh … next tact … look for a marriage to pinpoint that event’s time and place given how much he moved around.

Sarah Ann

For 1871lvii it appears that Sarah Ann is living with the Davies Family and is listed as the Niece in Law. I’m wondering, since the wife is named Hannah, if this is the family of her older sister Hannah (though we find no marriage at FreeBMD). Copyright © 2005 Mosaic Research and Project Management. See sister Sarah (above) for 1881 Census information … so, maybe moved from the dwelling of one sister to another!

See sister Sarah (above) for 1891 Census information … she is still with her sister’s family and is still a barmaid at their establishment (called “Horse & Groom” in 1891)

Is this why Sarah Ann could not be found in 1901?

Hutchinson Sarah Anne Bridgend 11a 1227

(we know that at least one other marriage at the time was Rees Griffiths and Jennet Walters Î should lead to Sarah Anne marrying John Henry Thomas)

With that we find them in 1901lviii … the issue was that she was given the same age as her husband and we know that she was around 43 in 1901, not 36!!!

APPENDIX F Tracking James Hutchinson (Sr.) to Westmorland

Hutchinson is a very popular name in Westmorland … particularly in the areas of Kendall and Windermere … never mind a name like James Hutchinson! We have little to go on. James was born about 1793. The 1851 census says Kendal and the 1861 census says Windermere … these locales are within miles of one another, and, they are still two different places! We also discovered that while James was in Maesteg, there were some other Hutchinson families from Westmorland (Robert and George from Staveley which is between Kendal and Windermere) … are they all related? It is not like Westmorland abuts Glamorgan (revisit the map on page 3) … in fact, they are fairly far apart geographically!

This map shows you the immediate vicinity of these communities. This is taken from an 1885 map. Start with Kendal, go NW and you’ll see Stavely (next to the red K; note that there is another Stavely SW of Kendal … hmmm) and then go slightly west and you’ll see Windermere (on the banks of Lake Windermere).

Now that we have the geography in our mind … let’s see what we could (mostly could not) find out!

1. IGI does not list a wedding in Westmorland for a James Hutchinson and a Martha in the appropriate time period JAMES HUTCHINSON Male

Marriages: Spouse: MARTHA TOWNS Marriage: 29 JUN 1813 Christ Church, Tynemouth, Northumberland, England If you look at the map, Northumberland and Westmorland are not even adjacent counties so this marriage is hard to figure.

2. IGI (www.familysearch.org) does not list an appropriate (or shall we say confirmable) christening for a James Hutchinson in the appropriate time period and/or place

Event(s): Christening: 04 FEB 1789 Kendal, Westmorland, England

Parents: Father: MARK HUTCHINSON Mother: MARY This is earlier than expected. It is Kendal (not Windermere) and for how large the family of James (Sr.) was, never children named Mark or Mary … so, doubtful that it’s ours! The only possible entry in the IGI.

3. Nothing in the Westmorland Papers, http://www.northofthesands.org.uk/index.php?file=home 4. Nothing at Cumbrian Genealogy, http://janelittle.members.beeb.net/

So, with absolutely no information to go on … this is currently a dead end and that will only change when some new information comes to light or we connect with somebody with a James Hutchinson in their family tree!
