Figures and/or pictures may be missing from this format of the document.*** Abstract: The incubus motif, prevalent in American horror movies, displays a victim, usually female, subjected to sexual attack by an unnatural entity during sleep or a sleep-like state.1 This study tests a hypothesis derived from the theory that media images govern the incidence and content of such anomalous accounts. It compares cinematic incubus motifs with memorates—stories told as personal experiences and believed by the tellers to be true. Since many of our findings fail to support the media images/cultural source hypothesis, we present an alternate model. Many incubus experiences coincide with patterns related to sleep paralysis. We suggest that sleep paralysis coupled with sexual arousal spawns memorates which provide a basis for incubus folklore. Article: The Cultural Source Theory David Hufford (1982a, 1982b, 1983) argues that modem societies support a "culture of disbelief" which assumes that occult experiences are cultural products. This paradigm is based on an implicit set of assumptions regarding the power of culture to shape experience. -

HENRY FUSELI’S THE NIGHTMARE: AN EXAMINATION OF THE RECENT SCHOLARSHIP by MELANIE DAVISON (Under the Direction of Alisa Luxenberg) ABSTRACT During his lifetime, Henry Fuseli gained great fame for his painting The Nightmare; however, his art fell largely into obscurity during the nineteenth century. It wasn’t until the twentieth century when some critics perceived a kinship between Surrealist ideas and goals and Fuseli’s work that the artist reemerged into artistic discourse. From this point, artists and art historians examined Fuseli’s masterwork, The Nightmare, in order to understand how the artist and his painting fit with practices and perspectives of his contemporaries and what made him stand apart. This paper will examine the scholarship about Fuseli’s painting and how it has affected our interpretation of the work of art while also allowing us to see the perspectives and interests of the scholars themselves. <Names of the Witch> 1 holder fill text to stop first line indent from scotc odern “Western” culture is saturated in demonized con- cepts of the witch, while lacking knowledge about authen- tic cultural practices in its own past. So it will surprise many to find that the oldest names for witch in European languages emphasize their spiritual gifts: powers of prophecy, divination, and incantation; of healing, herbal knowledge, shapeshifting and shamanic flight. Some cultures named witches after their magical staffs or masks or animal spirits. Others described them in language relating to Wisdom, Fate, and the Mysteries. With few exceptions, the old witch-titles honored them as cultural authorities, in sharp contrast to later diabolist stereo- types that portrayed witches as cursers and destroyers. One of the Norse names used for such women was fjölkynngi, “of manifold knowledge.” [Magnusson IV, 452] The English cognate cun- ning woman is based on the same ancient root of “knowing,” which survives in the expression “beyond his ken.” It is related to gnostic and know and Sanskrit jñana. Norse also had vísendakona, literally “wise woman,” and vítka (“sorceress”), both derived from another archaic root of seeing and knowing. The Latin saga (“wisewoman”) survived in French as sage-femme. The Russian witch-name знахарка means a “woman who knows.” Crossing into the Uralic language family, the Finnish word tietäjä is an ungendered term for “knower.” The more common Finnish word for “witch” is noita, closely related to noaidi, the Sámi title for a shaman. Incubus, Succubus and The Elementals In the world of the paranormal, virtually everyone knows about the reported existence of ghosts and haunted places; we even recognize creatures like Bigfoot, Mothman and the all encompassing UFO. To truly understand what we claim to study, we have to be, more or less, fairly well read in all matters of otherworldly creatures. To that end, we will now discuss three little mentioned phenomenon from ancient lore that seem to have passed out of fancy. The reason for their passing is however the meat of this lesson. Green Book Of Meditations Volume Ten Research Resources On Druidism 2003 Introduction Originally this was going to be the bulk of ARDA 2’s Part Seven Miscellany, but due to some copyright concerns and the general wholeness of the subject matter, it seem that a Green Book was possible out of the material. Much of material of Section Two is from ARDA 1’s Part Eight, and much from ARDA 1’s Part Seven is now here in Section Three and Four. This section will naturally expand over the years, so it’s a good idea to separate it from the main body text of ARDA 2. I don’t wish you to misinterpret this book as if for me to say that you have to be fascinated and obsessed with Celtic research to understand Druidism. That’s not what I mean. Yes, I’ve studied the old ones, but I think there is more than can be learned form living plants and animals and each other than from the few remaining scraps.
