HENRY FUSELI’S THE NIGHTMARE: AN EXAMINATION OF THE RECENT SCHOLARSHIP by MELANIE DAVISON (Under the Direction of Alisa Luxenberg) ABSTRACT During his lifetime, Henry Fuseli gained great fame for his painting The Nightmare; however, his art fell largely into obscurity during the nineteenth century. It wasn’t until the twentieth century when some critics perceived a kinship between Surrealist ideas and goals and Fuseli’s work that the artist reemerged into artistic discourse. From this point, artists and art historians examined Fuseli’s masterwork, The Nightmare, in order to understand how the artist and his painting fit with practices and perspectives of his contemporaries and what made him stand apart. This paper will examine the scholarship about Fuseli’s painting and how it has affected our interpretation of the work of art while also allowing us to see the perspectives and interests of the scholars themselves. Incubus, Succubus and The Elementals In the world of the paranormal, virtually everyone knows about the reported existence of ghosts and haunted places; we even recognize creatures like Bigfoot, Mothman and the all encompassing UFO. To truly understand what we claim to study, we have to be, more or less, fairly well read in all matters of otherworldly creatures. To that end, we will now discuss three little mentioned phenomenon from ancient lore that seem to have passed out of fancy. The reason for their passing is however the meat of this lesson. Here are the Random House – Webster’s definitions of what we are addressing: in·cu·bus (inÆkyà bÃs, ingÆ-), n., pl. -bi (-b#Å), -bus·es. 1. an demon or evil spirit supposed to descend upon sleeping persons, esp. one fabled to have sexual intercourse with women during their sleep. Witchcraft and Demonology in the Middle Ages Abstract Martin Le Franc gives voice to the ideas of his time through the characters of his poem and integrates into it the representations of traditional knowledge, discussions on heresy, magic and demonology as well as the popular beliefs concerning witchcraft and its practice. Savoy Amadeus VIII feels so strongly about the dangers of witchcraft that he enjoins both the secular and the ecclesiastical justice of his duchy to initiate the pursuit and judgment of heresy and witchcraft. From the 1440s, texts about witchcraft not only attempt to describe the Sabbath and the atrocities committed by sorcerers and witches but aim also at understanding the reality of the interactions between demons and witches, as well as their consequences. -
