Tradition and Transformation: Cataloguing Chinese Art in the Middle and Late Imperial Eras Abstract After obtaining sovereignty, a new emperor of China often gathers the imperial collections of previous dynasties and uses them as evidence of the legitimacy of the new regime. Some emperors go further, commissioning the compilation projects of bibliographies of books and catalogues of artistic works in their imperial collections not only as inventories but also for proclaiming their imperial power. The imperial collections of art symbolize political and cultural predominance, present contemporary attitudes toward art and connoisseurship, and reflect emperors’ personal taste for art. The attempt of this research project is to explore the practice of art cataloguing during two of the most important reign periods in imperial China: Emperor Huizong of the Northern Song Dynasty (r. 1101-1125) and Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty (r. 1736-1795). Through examining the format and content of the selected painting, calligraphy, and bronze catalogues compiled by both emperors, features of each catalogue reveal the development of cataloguing imperial artistic collections. -

life and writings of xu hui paul w. kroll The Life and Writings of Xu Hui (627–650), Worthy Consort, at the Early Tang Court mong the women poets of the Tang dynasty (618–907) surely the A.best known are Xue Tao 薛濤 (770–832), the literate geisha from Shu 蜀, and the volatile, sometime Daoist priestess Yu Xuanji 魚玄機 (ca. 844–870?). More interesting strictly as a poet than these two fig- ures are Li Ye 李冶 who was active during the late-eighth century and whose eighteen remaining poems show more range and skill than either Xue Tao or Yu Xuanji, and the “Lady of the Flower Stamens” (“Hua- rui furen” 花蕊夫人) whose 157 heptametric quatrains in the “palace” style occupy all of juan 798 in Quan Tang shi 全唐詩, even though she lived in the mid-tenth century and served at the court of the short-lived kingdom of Later Shu 後蜀.1 Far more influential in her day than any of these, though barely two dozen of her poems are now preserved, was the elegant Shangguan Wan’er 上官婉兒 (ca. 664–710), granddaughter of the executed courtier and poet Shangguan Yi 上官儀 (?–665) who had paid the ultimate price for opposing empress Wu Zhao’s 吳曌 (625–705) usurpation of imperial privileges.2 After the execution of Shangguan Yi and other members of his family, Wan’er, then just an infant, was taken into the court as a sort of expiation by empress Wu.3 By the end I should like to thank David R. -

Patterson All rights reserved ABSTRACT Elegies for Empire: The Poetics of Memory in the Late Work of Du Fu (712-770) Gregory M. Patterson This dissertation explores highly influential constructions of the past at a key turning point in Chinese history by mapping out what I term a poetics of memory in the more than four hundred poems written by Du Fu !" (712-770) during his two-year stay in the remote town of Kuizhou (modern Fengjie County #$%). A survivor of the catastrophic An Lushan rebellion (756-763), which transformed Tang Dynasty (618-906) politics and culture, Du Fu was among the first to write in the twilight of the Chinese medieval period. His most prescient anticipation of mid-Tang concerns was his restless preoccupation with memory and its mediations, which drove his prolific output in Kuizhou. For Du Fu, memory held the promise of salvaging and creatively reimagining personal, social, and cultural identities under conditions of displacement and sweeping social change. The poetics of his late work is characterized by an acute attentiveness to the material supports—monuments, rituals, images, and texts—that enabled and structured connections to the past. The organization of the study attempts to capture the range of Du Fu’s engagement with memory’s frameworks and media. It begins by examining commemorative poems that read Kuizhou’s historical memory in local landmarks, decoding and rhetorically emulating great deeds of classical exemplars. -

On A Snowy Night: Yishan Yining (1247-1317) and the Development of Zen Calligraphy in Medieval Japan Xiaohan Du Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy under the Executive Committee of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2021 © 2021 Xiaohan Du All Rights Reserved Abstract On A Snowy Night: Yishan Yining (1247-1317) and the Development of Zen Calligraphy in Medieval Japan Xiaohan Du This dissertation is the first monographic study of the monk-calligrapher Yishan Yining (1247- 1317), who was sent to Japan in 1299 as an imperial envoy by Emperor Chengzong (Temur, 1265-1307. r. 1294-1307), and achieved unprecedented success there. Through careful visual analysis of his extant oeuvre, this study situates Yishan’s calligraphy synchronically in the context of Chinese and Japanese calligraphy at the turn of the 14th century and diachronically in the history of the relationship between calligraphy and Buddhism. This study also examines Yishan’s prolific inscriptional practice, in particular the relationship between text and image, and its connection to the rise of ink monochrome landscape painting genre in 14th century Japan. This study fills a gap in the history of Chinese calligraphy, from which monk- calligraphers and their practices have received little attention. It also contributes to existing Japanese scholarship on bokuseki by relating Zen calligraphy to religious and political currents in Kamakura Japan. Furthermore, this study questions the validity of the “China influences Japan” model in the history of calligraphy and proposes a more fluid and nuanced model of synthesis between the wa and the kan (Japanese and Chinese) in examining cultural practices in East Asian culture. -

Chapter 5 Tang and the First Turkish Empire: From Appeasement to Conquest After the siege at Yanmen, Sui was on the verge of total collapse. A series of internal rebellions quickly turned into a turbulent civil war pit ting members of the ruling class against each other, and with different parts of the country under the control of local Sui generals sometimes facing rebel leaders, all of them soon contending for the greatest of all Chinese political prizes, the chance to replace a dynasty which had evi dently lost the Mandate. Those nearest the northern frontier naturally sought the support of the Eastern Turks, just as Turkish leaders had sought Chinese eissistance in their own power struggles.^ Freed of interference from a strong Chinese power, both the East ern and Western Turkish qaghanates soon recovered their positions of dominance in their respective regions. The Eastern qaghanate under Shibi Qaghan expanded to bring into its sphere of influence the Khitan and Shi- wei in the east and the Tuyuhun and Gaochang in the west. The Western Turks again expandedall the way to Persia, incorporating the Tiele and the various oasis states in the Western Regions, which one after another be came their subjects, paying regular taxes to the Western Turks. After an initial period of appeasement, Tang succeeded in conquer ing the Eastern Turks in 630 and the Western Turks in 659. This chapter examines the reasons for Tang’s military success, and how Tang tried to bring the Turks under Chinese administration so as to build a genuinely universal empire. -

Dazzling and rich in meaning, it is also difficult and obscure because of its pervasive allusiveness. Chapter I reviews critical opinion of Li's use of allusion. Many traditional critics see allusion as an ornamental rhetorical device and consider Li's profuse allusiveness an idiosyncrasy to be tolerated in an esteemed poet. Chapter II studies allusion broadly and precisely as a literary concept: generally, allusion is a "connector" of texts, a link between a poet's work and his literary heritage; specifi• cally, it is a linguistic device serving metaphorical functions. -

BBognaogna ŁakomskaŁakomska Academy of Fine Arts, Gdansk The State Ethnographic Museum in Warsaw Polish Institute of World Art Studies THE GREAT ERA OF ART COLLECTING IN CHINA Emperor Taizong and his followers n 618 AD when the Tang dynasty was founded, the Imperial Storehouse had merely three hundred scrolls, but all of them were regarded as treasures Ihanded down from the Sui dynasty.1) This small collection, however, only began to grow when on the throne sat Emperor Taizong 太宗 (626 – 649 AD) – one of the greatest art collectors of all times. An excellent scholar and calligra- pher, interested in art himself, Taizong almost fanatically began to buy art from private individuals.2) As a result, by the year 632 AD in the imperial collection there were already over 1,500 scrolls of calligraphy.3) The Imperial Storehouse was much more than simply a repository for art works. It was an exclusive institution uniting excellent intellectuals, artists and capable officials, who also were outstanding experts in art. Its core constituted a counsel of three authorities: Yu Shinan 虞世南 (558 – 638 AD) – once Emperor Taizong’s teacher of calligraphy; Wei Zheng 魏徵 (580 – 643 AD) – a brilliant officer and the emperor’s adviser; and Chu Suiliang 褚遂良 (597 – 658 AD) – 1) Acker (1979: 127). 2) In sponsored by the Emperor Huizong 徽宗 (1100 – 1126) the Xuanhe Huapu宣和画谱 (Catalogue of Paintings of the Xuanhe Emperor [Huizong]), there is a following description of Emperor Taizong as an artist as well as a patron of art: “…Taizong was good at fei bai飞白 (fl ying white) and gave some of his pieces in it to his top offi cials. -
