1. EVENT INFORMATION and REGISTRATION

The Sully District “” Camporee promises to be a great time. The event will include the opportunity for two nights of camping, starting Friday night, October 20, 2017.

We encourage every Troop and Pack to participate – even if only for the Saturday day events.

Axes, knives and are the of the trade for Boy Scouts. Participating Scouts should bring their enthusiasm and skills to the Lumberjack Camporee, for games, competition, and fellowship! DON’T FORGET YOUR TOTIN’ CHIP – it’s required to be able to participate!

Your host for this Camporee is Sully District and Troop 7369. The Camporee Director is SM Michael Warsocki (571-212-2089)

WHO is to attend: All Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts are welcome to attend. Camping is limited to Boy Scout Troops. Arrow of Light Cub Scouts may camp if they have a Troop sponsor. They will camp in the Troop area. All Cub Scouts are invited to visit for the day and are encouraged to stay for the Saturday evening campfire.

WHEN: October 20-22, 2017

EVENTS: The Lumberjack Camporee will consist of these events:  Skill Competitions and Food challenges  Campfire and awards program

PATCHES: Each registered person will receive a distinctive patch.

COST: $20 per Boy Scout, Arrow of Light Cub or adult camping, $10 per Cub Scout or adult for Saturday activities. Cost includes the facility fees, Scout insurance, a Camporee patch, and materials for the various events.

REGISTRATION: Please register on line at the Sully Web page https://scoutingevent.com/082-SullyFallCamporee  Complete the Unit Reservation form on page 15 and bring with you the final count of your participating scouts and the balance that is owed. This information will be used to finalize campsite locations and plan logistics.  Saturday only participants may submit $10 per person online or on site.

UNIFORM: In addition to the Camporee T-Shirts, flannel is highly encouraged. Long pants, hiking shoes/boots, and appropriate outerwear for the weather are required. Each Scout should bring proper work gloves since there will be chopping, sawing and log rolling. There is no requirement for Class A uniform this weekend.

2. ARRIVAL, CHECK-IN, CHECK-OUT, and CAMPOREE GEAR

A. Check- in:  Friday night Oct 20th from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.  Register your unit at the Registration Table located at the end of the Parking Lot. This is where you turn in your final registration forms and roster (page 15). Completed permission forms should stay with your Troop.  If you arrive after 8:00 p.m. on Friday or anytime on Saturday, registration will be at the Camporee HQ tent on the field.  Please remember to bring a check to pay balance of fees due.  You will receive a bag with the forms that each Scout needs for the weekend at registration. Please bring a sharpie/permanent marker so that each Scout can put his name on his bag and on his Event Passport.  Pre-ordered t-shirts and beard beanies will be given to the Scoutmaster/Cubmaster at registration unless they were previously issued off site.  Scoutmasters will be given paper wrist bands for each person in their contingent. These wrist bands are color coded and must be worn at all times during the Camporee.

B. Traffic Control and Parking:  On entering Camp Snyder you will be directed to the southern end of the parking area.  All vehicles (and passengers) should remain in the parking lot until their unit leadership has checked in at BOTH the registration table at the end of the parking lot AND the Camporee Headquarters on the field.  Weather depending (i.e. no rain and the ground is solid), Troop vehicles will be allowed to drive to the camp site to drop off gear. Only two vehicles at a time in the campsite. (1 Hour maximum time allowed per vehicle).  Troops may bring their Troop trailer. Weather depending (i.e. no rain and the ground is solid), Troop trailers may be parked beside the campsite.  All vehicles will be parked in the designated parking area.  ABSOLUTELY NO CARS WILL BE ALLOWED TO REMAIN AT THE CAMPSITE.

C. Camping  After signing in at the Registration Table in the parking lot, units will check in at the Camporee Headquarters on the field. Campsite

assignment will be made available at this time. You will need to get your site assignment before you enter the camping area.  Campsites will be assigned based on number of Scouts and Scouters pre- registered. Late registering units may be camping in overflow areas.

D. Late Arrival and Early Departure If a unit is not going to arrive Friday night, please email us at [email protected] and put “CAMPOREE ARRIVAL” in the subject line, so that we can plan accordingly. If your unit is going to leave Saturday night, make sure you please email us at [email protected] and put “CAMPOREE DEPARTURE” in the subject line AND confirm at registration.

E. Check-Out Procedures After you have cleared your campsite of all unit and personal gear, policed the area and thoroughly extinguished any fires, send someone to notify Camporee Headquarters. Someone from the Camporee Staff will inspect your campsite. All units should be out of camp by 11:00 AM on Sunday.

F. Pre-ordered Camporee T-shirts and Beard Beanies  Beard beanies were distributed at Roundtable if your unit checked in with our Troop leaders. If not, they will be available at the registration table.  Pre-ordered t-shirts will be distributed to the units at the registration table.  Unit leaders should have a list of who they ordered these items for so that they can do the internal unit distribution.

G. Camporee Patches  The Camporee patches will be distributed Saturday night at the Lumberjack Campfire. The number of patches per unit will be based on final check in unit registration numbers.  Beads to be attached to the patches will be earned by participating in events during the day. Scouts will pick up their beads at the Trading Post after events are completed on Saturday from 4:30-7:30 pm.

H. Lumberjack Trading Post  There will be a small Lumberjack Trading Post located with the Camporee Headquarters. Items such as extra patches, red suspenders, limited extra t-shirts and beard beanies will be available on a first come first served basis.  A Kona Ice truck will be onsite in the afternoon. Scouts and adults can purchase ices and put make their own syrup concoction from the flavors offered on the truck.

3. GENERAL INFORMATION, GUIDELINES and RULES

A. SAFETY:  Leaders are responsible for the safety of the Scouts in their units at all times. Scouts are not allowed out of camp except during planned activities while under adult supervision of the unit. 4

 Troop Leaders will ensure that all of their participating Scouts have a proper Totin’ Chip Card. All Scouts should have the card on them during the Camporee. Leaders please bring extra cards in case any of your Scouts forget theirs.  Youth Protection - National BSA policy requires that, "Two registered adult leaders, or one adult and a parent of a participating Scout, one of whom must be at least 21 years of age or older, are required for all trips or outings.” It is the unit leader's responsibility to see that these policies are enforced within his/her unit.  Questions or concerns should be directed to the Camporee Director or to the District Executive.

B. SECURITY  Scoutmasters will be issued paper bracelets for each registered attendee at check in.  These wrist bands are color coded and must be worn at all times during the Camporee.  If you’re not wearing a wrist band, we will assume that you haven’t paid and ask you to pay before you participate in any activities.  If you see someone walking around without a wrist band, please escort them to the Camporee Headquarters immediately so they can sign in.

C. FIRST AID:  First aid will be handled by each respective Unit attending. Report any injuries to the Headquarters at the Camporee HQ. The First Aid Station will be set up near the Camporee Headquarters area for those who need additional help.  Parental Authorization - In case of serious injury or illness requiring emergency medical services or hospital treatment, a health history record and permission form signed by a parent or guardian is required. This form must be accessible to the adult leader/leaders at all times. If a Scout is brought to the First Aid Station for any type of treatment, his parental authorization form and medical form should be available for review by the Camporee staff. A sample form for unit use is included in this package.  Fire & Ambulance Service - In the unlikely event that fire or ambulance services are needed, send a runner to the Camporee Headquarters, so that an emergency call can be placed and the Camporee Director can be notified immediately. If the emergency call is placed from a cellular phone within your area, you still must send a runner to the Camporee Headquarters to notify the Camporee Director of the emergency and to arrange for the emergency equipment to be directed to the correct location.

D. HEALTH AND SANITATION  Latrines - Port-o-Johns will serve as latrines. They will be located in the Camporee area. Please keep them clean! One will be designated as a

handicapped and women’s latrine.  Water – Water will be provided via the water jugs from the Snyder Dining hall. A water exchange point will be set up for units to pick up and return water jugs as needed.  Proper clothing - It is the responsibility of the parents and unit leaders to ensure that the Scout's clothing and footwear is proper for the weather of the day and field conditions at Camp Snyder. We highly encourage all Scouts to wear a good pair of hiking boots since and saws will be in use and bring a proper fitting pair of work gloves.

E. Proper Uniform – Time to get your flannel on. You are encouraged to get into the Lumberjack spirit. Camporee t-shirts and flannel shirts are encouraged. Class A uniforms are NOT required this weekend.

F. LOST AND FOUND - Located at the Camporee Headquarters. Please have your Scouts label all personal gear with name and unit number.

G. TOUR PERMITS - Individual unit tour permits are not required for this event, but may be filed with the council office in Bethesda.

H. CHANGES AND CANCELLATIONS - The Camporee Director is the only individual authorized to change or cancel a scheduled activity or event. Any necessary changes will be made at the earliest possible time and posted in writing at Camporee Headquarters.

4. CAMPING GUIDELINES

A. Ground Conditions - The camping will be in relatively flat grassy areas with limited cover. There are low spots, so rains may make many of the sites muddy. Protect your tents by bringing sturdy ground cloths and protect your body by bringing foam pads or air mattresses for a good night's rest.

B. Natural Habitat and FIREWOOD - No , shrubs, or bushes will be cut within the campground or neighboring areas. that has fallen from trees may be burned. Do not molest or interfere with the area's wildlife. Absolutely no cutting of live trees. Wood from the splitting competition will be available for campfires following the end of the competition day.

C. Off Limits - ALL Camp Snyder Program Theme areas are off limits. (e.g., Fort, Ship, etc.)

D. Tents - Tents are permitted on the ground.

E. Campfires are only permitted in an elevated fire bowl which can also be used for Dutch oven cooking. Fires must not be left unattended and must be extinguished before retiring for the night.

F. Trash - Every unit should bring a supply of plastic trash bags to securely bag their own trash. We ask that you carry your trash out. Please keep the 6

campground clean and do not leave bags of garbage unattended; wild animals and birds love unattended garbage.

5. CAMPOREE RULES

A. Law of the Camporee - As in all Scouting activities, the Scout Oath and Law will be the law of the Camporee. Any individual who does not act as he should may be asked to leave the event. Unit Leaders are reminded that their Scouts should have adult supervision at all times. Units that do not comply with these rules may be asked to leave.  Troop campsites will be in relative close quarters. Ask permission before entering another troop’s campsite. Remember a Scout is Courteous.  Discipline - Leaders are responsible for the behavior and discipline of their unit members. Units will be asked to leave when the situation warrants.

B. Quiet Hours – All units will be subject to quiet hours and lights out from 10:30 PM to 6:30 AM. Leaders in each Troop and Pack are responsible for enforcing quiet hours and lights out.

C. Knives -Sheath knives and knives with blades longer than 4 inches, except cooking knives, are not allowed at the Camporee. Only folding knives are allowed. Please keep them in your pocket, in a case, or on your belt. Totin’ Chip / Whittlin’ Chip required!

D. Alcoholic Beverages - No alcoholic beverages of any kind are allowed at the Camporee.

E. PETS - No pets or other animals are permitted.

6. Driving Instructions to Camp Snyder

From the east:

 Travel on Interstate 66 West; take Exit #40 (Route 15).  Turn left onto Route 15 and travel south about 3/10ths mile.  Turn right onto Route 55 (John Marshall Hwy) and travel west about 9/10th mile.  Turn right onto Antioch Road and travel about 8/10th mile  The Camp Snyder entrance will be on your left.  Parking will be at the southern end of the parking lot.  See map below for location of Camporee field

2017 LUMBERJACK CAMPOREE PROGRAM EVENTS

General Instructions: Each participant will be provided a Lumberjack Event Passport at registration. The passport will be punched after the completion of each event. Once a participant completes all of the Lumberjack events they can turn it at the Lumberjack Trading Post for their Lumberjack Cord with Log Beads.

Lumberjack Events (Boy Scouts)

1. 2 Man Machine ( 2 Man )  Teams of two are put to the test to see who can work together and how fast they can saw through a log  Rules • Teams of 2 • 2 Age Groups (11-13 years; 14-17 years) • Teams saw through a designated number of discs in the shortest time possible • First disc will be notched to start • All discs must be cut top to bottom

2. Bullseye Blades (Knife Throwing)  Teams compete against one another to see which team can get the highest score and do their best to hit the bullseye  Rules • Teams of 2 • 2 Age Groups (11-13 years; 14-17 years) • 5 Targets, 5 Throwing Stations; 1 Throwing Distance • 3 Knives per person • Each age group scored in different sections • 3 Rings on target – each increases by 1 point with 3 points in the center • Crossing the throwing line means throw is disqualified • Knife in between two rings receives higher score

3. Hurl (Tomahawk Throwing)  Teams toss their down the range in an attempt to have a higher level of accuracy than all others  Rules • Teams of 2 • 2 Age Groups (11-13 years; 14-17 years)

• Each team member throws 3 hatchets and scores are combined together • 4 Targets – Team Members throw at adjacent targets • All ages throw from the same distance but age groups are scored separately • The target has two rings worth different point values • Crossing the throwing line means throw is disqualified • Hatchet crossing two zones will get points based on where majority of hatchet is • Hatchet in the center will get the higher score

4. Lug (Roll and Drag)  Teams of 2 compete to see who can successfully use a cant and then lug the timber back in the fastest time.  Rules • Teams of 2 • 2 Age Groups (11-13 years; 14-17 years) • 11-13 year olds will use the smaller log; 14-17 year olds will use the larger log • Teams line up and roll a log a pre-set distance using the provided • Once the team reaches the end of the log roll they will tie a rope around the log using a properly tied timber hitch and use it to drag the rope back to the starting line. • The team will work to finish the roll and drag in the fastest time possible.

5. Super Split  You and your fellow lumberjack need to work together to split as many logs as possible with only a few swings.  Rules • Teams of 2 • 2 Age Groups (11-13 years; 14-17 years) • 11-13 year olds will use the smaller log and smaller ; 14-17 year olds will use the larger log and larger axe • Each person gets the same number of swings • Split as many logs as possible • Logs must be split so that the pieces fit into a pre-made slot

6. Timber!  Quick, chop this log in half as fast as you can with your fellow lumberjack  Rules • Teams of 2 • 2 Age Groups (11-13 years; 14-17 years)

• 11-13 year olds will use the smaller log and smaller axe; 14-17 year olds will use the larger log and larger axe • Teams will work together, alternating turns to chop the log in the fastest time possible • There will be a set time limit. If you exceed the time limit the team will be disqualified

7. Lumberjack Lasso  Practice all day to lasso your way to the top of a single elimination competition that will be held in the afternoon

8. Lasso tournament  Teams will be able to put their skills to the test in a single elimination lasso tournament to determine the true champion across all of camp  Rules • Scouts are encouraged to practice lassoing throughout the day to determine the best representatives from each troop • Each troop will be able to have two teams, one from the 10-13 year old category and one from the 14 and up category, each comprising of two members • Teams will face off in an attempt to be the first to lasso and pull in the log at the center of the ring • If a team loses, they are immediately eliminated and the winning team progresses to the next round • The tournament will begin at 4:30 p.m. and run until complete in the afternoon, any teams that arrive late will be immediately disqualified

Jr Lumberjack Events (Cub Scout/AOL Scout)

1. Hurling Hawks  Participants toss their hatchets (Nerf) down the range in an attempt to land their hatchet in the target.  Rules • 2 Throwing Stations • 1 Throwing Distance • 4 Throws per person

2. Lumberjack Saw  Participants will be put to the test to see how fast they can cut two sections from the log provided  Rules • Saw through the log in the shortest possible time • All cuts will be cut top to bottom with the provided

3. Lumber Roll  Participants will roll the log a pre-set distance and back to the starting line  Rules • Objective is to finish in the shortest time possible

4. Lumber Lug  Participants will drag a small log using the rope tied around it a pre-set distance and back to the starting line  Rules • Objective is to finish in the shortest time possible

5. Lumberjack….Knot  Try your hand at tying the different types of knots  Rules • Scouts will have 5 minutes to tie as many knots as possible following the instruction card provided

6. Dizzy Lumberjack  Participants will begin by spinning around the axe handle 10 times and then run the pre-set distance. At the end they will have to get dressed as a lumberjack (flannel shirt, jeans, suspenders, and a hat) then take the items off again and return to the start.  Rules • Complete the dizzy lumberjack course in the shortest time possible

7. Click Clack Lumberjack  Try your hand at chipping away at the bark on the tree without knocking off any pieces of the trunk  Rules • See who comes out ahead in this 10 minute Lumberjack game and how your lumberjack skills stack up against the other scouts.

Food competition names and descriptions:

1. Flapjack Fine Art (Patrol Competition)  Be creative and turn this classic lumberjack meal into something new and spectacular  Rules • Flapjacks that are entered must be cooked by scouts from start to finish, with absolutely no tweaking by adults, but advice beforehand is strongly encouraged

• The entire patrol must be an active member in the creation or clean-up of the food • All entries must be cooked at the Lumberjack Camporee in the patrol area • The flapjacks may be made however the patrol choses with the objective of creating the most creative, good-looking, and delicious pancake(s) possible, fit for a Lumberjack. • Patrols can pick up a foil pan for presentation of their Flapjack Fine Art during the day at the Lumberjack Trading Post • Each patrol is to bring their entry to Headquarters by 9:00a.m. in the morning for breakfast and judging will begin immediately  Judging Criteria • Scale of 1 to 5 for taste (Yuck to I want more) • Scale of 1 to 10 for creativity (Creative art and flavors) • Scale of 1 to 5 for presentation • 20 possible points

2. Manly Meal Competition (Patrol Competition)  Make the manliest dinner you can imagine that would be fit for even the toughest of  Rules • Meals that are entered must be cooked by scouts from start to finish, with absolutely no tweaking by adults, but advice beforehand is strongly encouraged • The entire patrol must be an active member in the creation or clean-up of the meal • All entries must be cooked at the Lumberjack Camporee in the patrol area • The Manly Meal may be made in whatever way the patrol choses with the objective of creating the most manly and delicious meal fit for a Lumberjack. • Patrols can pick up a thermos or foil pan for presentation of their Manly Meal during the day at the Lumberjack Trading Post • Each patrol is to bring their entry to Headquarters by 7:00 p.m. during scheduled dinner time. Judging will begin immediately following.

 Judging Criteria • Scale of 1 to 5 for taste (Meh! to I want more) • Scale of 1 to 5 for overall manliness • Sale of 1 to 5 for presentation • 15 possible points

CAMPFIRE PROGRAM

This will not be your traditional campfire program. There will be fire. There will be flannel. There will be fun. All we’re gonna say is you’d better bring a poncho – there’s likely to be a designated splash zone!
