Downloaded by [New York University] at 03:18 04 October 2016 Nurses and Midwives in Nazi Germany This book is about the ethics of nursing and midwifery, and how these were abrogated during the Nazi era. Nurses and midwives actively killed their patients, many of whom were disabled children and infants and patients with mental (and other) illnesses or intellectual disabilities. The book gives the facts as well as theoretical perspectives as a lens through which these crimes can be viewed. It also provides a way to teach this history to nursing and midwifery students, and, for the first time, explains the role of one of the world’s most historically prominent midwifery leaders in the Nazi crimes. Curatorial Team Elena Agudio, Antonia The Law of the Pursuer is an essay exhibition by Amos Gitai Alampi, Abhishek Nilamber. Commissioned by SAVVY Contemporary. revolving around some of the issues and themes raised in his film, Rabin, the Last Day (2015), about the assassination of the Israeli Contact: http://www.savvy-contemporary.com Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin on 4 November 1995. Featuring unreleased research material and film footage from Gitai’s archive and collected over the course of the last twenty years, the exhibition’s central piece is a new video installation with a performative element commissioned by SAVVY Contemporary questioning the shifting concept of democracy and addressing the problem of extremisms and the current crisis of politics. Resonating with the structure of the film, his installation is a whirlwind of discourse surrounding the terrible and confounding act of violence that took place in Tel Aviv, while also becoming a metaphor of the consequences of a polarized and poisonous atmosphere of political extremism. “Cinema is more authoritarian than literature” An Interview with Amos Gitaï Marie-Pierre ULLOA Israeli filmmaker Amos Gitaï discusses the relationship between cinema and literature, memory, space, and language. In particular, he tells us about his screen adaptation of Jérôme Clément’s autobiographical novel, which portrays the story of a son’s quest in search of his Jewish mother’s painful past. Films directed by Amos Gitaï include in particular: Kadosh, Kippur, Alila, Free Zone, Disengagement, Ana Arabia. Books and Ideas: Over the course of your career, you have adapted several literary works for the screen, for example Alila, an adaptation of Returning Lost Loves by Yehoshua Kenaz, and Roses à crédit by Elsa Triolet. You directed the theatrical adaptation of an episode from The Jewish War by Flavius Josephus for the Avignon Festival, as well as One Day You’ll Understand, based on the novel by Jérôme Clément. What is it that attracts you to the process of adapting a literary work for the screen? Amos Gitaï: Literature does not need cinema. Unlike cinema, literature functions on several levels. In literature, you do not have a set, rigid image attempting to flesh out a text. A reader can flesh out the text in many different ways. Cinema, on the other hand, is more authoritarian. It gives us a single interpretation of a text. I always say to the writers I am adapting for the screen: “I don’t want to illustrate your text, because it deserves to exist on its own. The reason I am doing this screen adaptation is to create a dialogue in between two independent disciplines. -

Schwerer Verlust Am 24. Oktober 2018 um 2:00 Früh ist unser Genosse Rudi Gelbard nach schwerer Krankheit verstorben. Mit Rudi Gelbard verlor unser Bund nicht nur einen wertvollen Zeitzeugen und Lehrer, wir verloren einen guten Menschen und lieben Freund. Er war ein konsequenter Antifaschist mit lexikalischem Wissen. udi wurde am 4. Dezember 1930 geboren. Er wuchs in der Leopoldstadt auf und wurde im Oktober 1942 mit seinen Eltern von den Nazis in das KZ Theresienstadt verschleppt. Von den 15.000 Kindern, die in Rdiesen Vorhof der Vernichtung gebracht wurden, überlebten nur etwa 200. Mit Mutter und Vater erlebte Rudi die Befreiung am 8. Mai 1945. Ende der 1940er Jahre absolvierte er die Akademie der Sozialistischen Ju- gend Österreich, in den 1950er Jahren die Parteischule der SPÖ Wien. Beruflich war Rudi beim „Kurier“ tätig. Am 7. Dezember 1996 wurde er in den Bundesvorstand der FreiheitskämpferInnen gewählt und gehörte diesem bis zu seinem Tode an. Für sein Engagement als Volksbildner im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes erhielt er zahllose Auszeichnungen. 2008 wurden das filmische Porträt „Der Mann auf dem Balkon“ sowie das Buch „Die dunklen sabineschatz.at Shaked/via Daniel Seiten des Planeten: Rudi Gelbard, der Kämpfer“ veröffentlicht. Für Professor Rudolf Gelbard war das Dasein als Zeitzeuge Privileg und Verpflichtung Rudi scheute nie die verbale aber auch körperliche Konfrontation mit Neonazis und Leugnern der Shoa. Und zugleich – bis ins hohe Alter wurde Rudi nicht Rudi war auf dem linken Auge nicht blind – er erforschte und verurteilte die Verbrechen des Stalinismus genauso müde, seine Erfahrungen, Erinnerungen mit Akribie wie jene der NS-Barbarei. -
