His poetry composed in defense of Muh ammad and the nascent religion of Islam has been widely studied, and it is in this context that Hass ān appears in Arabic literary history. This dissertation argues that in addition to his role as an exemplar of poetry in the service of Islam, H ass ān can be viewed as a true mukhad ram . The mukhad ram ūn (singular: mukhad ram ) were a class of poets whose lives spanned both the pre-Islamic and the Islamic periods. To appreciate H ass ān’s identity as a transitional figure, the poet’s pre-Islamic compositions must be examined in greater depth. Prior to the rise of Islam, H ass ān served as the primary court poet to the Ghass ānids, a sedentary, Christian kingdom located in modern-day Syria and Jordan. This study analyzes H ass ān’s twenty-six Ghass ānid poems and fragments. Although many of the selected poems date from the pre-Islamic period, several were composed near the end of H ass ān’s life when he nostalgically recalled his youth in the company of the Ghass ānids. The method of analysis utilized in this dissertation relies on close reading and in-depth textual analysis of selected verses and poems. This study reveals H ass ān to be a pioneer in the urbanization of Arabic poetry and a precursor to the poets of the later ‘Abb āsid caliphate who replaced the desert imagery and motifs prevalent in pre-Islamic poetry with themes more appropriate to their urban iii environments. Hass ān’s compositions demonstrate not only a familiarity with the urban landscape of the Ghass ānids but also a clear disdain for the pastoral lifestyle of the Arab nomads. Hass ān’s urbanism is one illustration of his status as a mukhad ram . This study also examines the wine lyric in Hass ān’s Ghass ānid poetry. The poet’s verses in praise of wine date from both the pre-Islamic and the Islamic periods and are further evidence of Hass ān’s embodiment of the mukhad ram predicament. iv Acknowledgements Special thanks to my mentor Irfan Shahîd whose encyclopedic knowledge of Arabic poetry and groundbreaking research on the Ghass ānids and pre-Islamic Arabia inspired this study and guided its progress.     The Last Empire of Iran By Michael R.J. Bonner In 330 BCE, Alexander the Great destroyed the Persian imperial capital at Persepolis. This was the end of the world’s first great international empire. The ancient imperial traditions of the Near East had culminated in the rule of the Persian king Cyrus the Great. He and his successors united nearly all the civilised people of western Eurasia into a single state stretching, at its height, from Egypt to India. This state perished in the flames of Persepolis, but the dream of world empire never died. The Macedonian conquerors were gradually overthrown and replaced by a loose assemblage of Iranian kingdoms. The so-called Parthian Empire was a decentralised and disorderly state, but it bound together much of the sedentary Near East for about 500 years. When this empire fell in its turn, Iran got a new leader and new empire with a vengeance. The third and last pre-Islamic Iranian empire was ruled by the Sasanian dynasty from the 220s to 651 CE. The ruler, therefore, needs persons to help him in the matters concerned with 'the sword,' 'the pen,' and finances; and among them the pen ranks high."1 It may have been thought to rank even higher than the sword and finances, for, according to Muslim tradition, the pen was the first object God created.2 Of its power and creativeness in Islamic culture there can be no doubt, and those who wielded the pen enjoyed great esteem. Poets and literati lent their talents to the business of government and, according to Ibn al-Sayrafl, achieved "with the pen what the sword and the lance over a long period of years had been unable to produce."3 Unfortunately, the use of the pen as an instrument of Muslim policy and the preservation of the products of the pen, namely offi- cial documents, have received too little attention so far.     religions Article Islam¯ and Genesis 17: A Study in Scriptural Intertextuality Khaleel Mohammed Department of Religious Studies, San Diego State University, San Diego, CA 92182-6062, USA; [email protected] Received: 25 August 2018; Accepted: 17 September 2018; Published: 28 September 2018 Abstract: Abraham Geiger’s 1833 essay launched a particular genre of research that posits foreign etymology for many terms in the Qur’an.¯ Whereas some work has been erudite, others have posited far-fetched concepts to the point where at least one author opines that Aramaic was the original language of the Qur’an.¯ Muslim exegetes have compounded the problem by seeking to interpret the Qur’an¯ on its own, without reference to other Abrahamic scriptures. I argue that Muhammad’s audience understood him clearly since he was using terms that had become part of the Arabic language long before his time. I examine three terms: islam,¯ iman,¯ and d¯ın, showing that the meaning of these words in the Qur’an¯ can be deciphered by reliance on context of usage and intertextuality. To this end, I refer to several verses of the Qur’an¯ as well as of the Hebrew Bible and Talmudic literature. A proper understanding of these words allows us to see Q3:19 and Q5:3 as pluralistic instead of the particularistic interpretation that most exegetes proffer. In 604 taking advantage of the revolt of the patrikios Nars- es against Phokas, he captured the city of Dara. By 609, the Persians had com- pleted the conquest of Byzantine Mesopotamia with the capitulation of Edes- sa.1 A year earlier, in 608, the Exarch of Carthage Herakleios the Elder rose in revolt against Phokas. His nephew Niketas campaigned against Egypt while his son, also named Herakleios, led a fleet against Constantinople. Herakleios managed to enter the city and kill Phokas. He was crowned emperor on Octo- ber 5, 610.2 Ironically, three days later on October 8, 610, Antioch, the greatest city of the Orient, surrendered to the Persians who took full advantage of the Byzantine civil strife.3 A week later Apameia, another great city in North Syria, came to terms with the Persians. Emesa fell in 611. Despite two Byzantine counter at- tacks, one led by Niketas in 611 and another led by Herakleios himself in 613, the Persian advance seemed unstoppable. Damascus surrendered in 613 and a year later Caesarea and all other coastal towns of Palestine fell as well.
