Baker Act should be nationwide Editor: Why should Florida’s Baker Act be nationwide? Because I know it works! On two occasions, I initiated the Baker Act and it was as simple as going to the downtown St. Petersburg courthouse and completing a simple form explaining the circumstances, at which time a judge decided that there was justifi cation and instructed that the person be delivered to a designated location where psychologists evaluated the person and made the fi nal decision. In one case, the person was given medications and held for further evaluation and then released and in the other case, it was determined that the person could not remain in her home alone and needed to be placed in a secure facility for further treatment. Return to the basics Editor: Isn’t it about time parents stop seeking friendship from their children and apply discipline and tough love? If your child is disturbed, stop enabling, get help. The reality is that not every little girl is a princess and should not be misled. Not every child is a winner and needs a trophy for just showing up. There are other ways of building self-esteem. Video games, even an hour a day, will not prevent kids from looking at the wrong games. When parents take children out looking unkept with baseball caps turned around, sloppy clothing, and sit with them at a table while they use foul language and play video games instead of engaging in family conversation, what message are you giving them? It is time to stop this “anything goes” attitude and get back to the basics. Family time, church time, parental control, and adults’ respect for one another whether it be on the road or in the grocery line. Let’s stop this foolishness and return to the basics of fi ne people creating a healthy society. Katherine Lovallo Seminole
