Marie Laing M.A. Thesis
Conversations with Young Two-Spirit, Trans and Queer Indigenous People About the Term Two-Spirit by Marie Laing A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Department of Social Justice Education Ontario Institute for Studies in Education University of Toronto © Copyright by Marie Laing 2018 Conversations with Young Two-Spirit, Trans and Queer Indigenous People About the Term Two-Spirit Marie Laing Master of Arts Department of Social Justice Education University of Toronto 2018 Abstract Since the coining of the term in 1990, two-spirit has been used with increasing frequency in reference to Indigenous LGBTQ people; however, there is rarely explicit discussion of to whom the term two-spirit refers. The word is often simultaneously used as both an umbrella term for all Indigenous people with complex genders or sexualities, and with the specific, literal understanding that two-spirit means someone who has two spirits. This thesis discusses findings from a series of qualitative interviews with young trans, queer and two-spirit Indigenous people living in Toronto. Exploring the ways in which participants understand the term two-spirit to be a meaningful and complex signifier for a range of ways of being in the world, this paper does not seek to define the term two-spirit; rather, following the direction of research participants, the thesis instead seeks to trouble the idea that articulating a definition of two-spirit is a worthwhile undertaking. ii Acknowledgments There are many people without whom I would not have been able to complete this research. Thank you to my supervisor, Dr. -

William Prince
William Prince by Ted A Griffin Table Of Contents Register Report for William Prince 1 Kinship Report for William Prince 76 Index 102 ii Register Report for William Prince Generation 1 1. WILLIAM1 PRINCE was born about 1788 in Candys Creek, Mcminniville, Tennessee, USA. He died in 1850 in Lawrence, Kentucky, United States. He married (1) LAURIE FYFFE in 1798. He married (2) RACHEL MURPHY about 1810 in Russell, Virginia, USA. She was born about 1784 in Tennessee, USA. She died in Lawrence, Kentucky, United States. Notes for William Prince: We know that William Prince was named William D. Prince as the 1850 census of Habersham county shows this, and also the 1850 delinquent tax list of Habersham shows the same name. The 1850 Murray county GA census shows William enumerated without his middle initial, but there is no doubt it is the same family (with a few unsurprising discrepancys) that appears in 1850 Habersham. As Joseph Prince owned land in Murray county GA in 1850, it is certainly likely that William was residing on that land once he left Habersham. (Phil Prince <[email protected]>) Notes for Laurie Fyffe: There is no evidence that this is correct. It is most likely that Laurie Fyffe married some other William Prince. Notes for Rachel Murphy: Rachel filed for divorce on Dec 21, 1835 stating that she and William had moved back to Lawrence Co. abt 1828 and in 1829 he had deserted her and taken up with Arty Mullins. (According to my Great Aunt Emma Prince Thompson, Carter Prince's Grandmother was a Gregor. -
TWIST by JODIE BLACKSHAW
About the composer: Jodie Blackshaw grew up in the Riverina, NSW and after completing high school, studied a Bachelor of Music in Composition with Professor Larry Sitsky at the Australian National University, School of Music. Since then, she has worked teaching music to students of all ages and conducting a variety of ensembles in several different settings, from remote country centres to the inner city. The influence of Orff-Schulwerk methodology is a significant influence of Jodie’s teaching practice and composition. In December 2012, Jodie presented the clinic ‘Get off the Podium’ alongside Dr. Mark Fonder of Ithaca College and conductor Professor Craig Kirchhoff at the Midwest Clinic in Chicago, Illinois. This clinic, advocating her unique compositional style and inclusive teaching approach to ensemble, offered directors opportunities to explore musical elements other than melody and harmony. Jodie is passionate about inspiring teachers and musicians to be active in the music making process. Jodie won the inaugural Frank Ticheli Composition Contest earning her publication of a Grade 1 piece Whirlwind. Whirlwind was premièred at the Midwest clinic in 2006 and now appears on several state band lists. A second work, Terpsichorean Dances was awarded 2nd place in ‘Category 2’ of the same competition. Jodie resides in the Blue Mountains, New South Wales, Australia with her husband David and daughter Matilda and works full-time as a composer and appears as a guest clinician and adjudicator for band festivals throughout Australia. Jodie is fanatical about producing quality, meaningful works for band. She desires that her music not just be "another piece, but an educational and spiritual journey for both the players and the director". -
