The oil was extracted from the dried pulp using hexane via BOX 563, Buea, Cameroon maceration method. The study is focused on the water diffusion phenomenon through the Raffia vinifera fibre from the stem. The knowledge on the behavior of those fibres in presence of liquid during the realization of biocomposite, is necessary. The parameters like percentage of water gain at the point of saturation, modelling of the kinetic of water absorption, and the effective diffusion coefficient were the main objectives. Along a stem of raffia, twelve zones of sampling were defined. -

Raffia is a kind of fast-growing palm tree, from the family of Arecaceae, encountered in marshy areas and along rivers. In this study, the“RaffiaBamboo”isthestalkofapalm,madeofafragilemarrowinsideathinshell,smoothandhardtoprotectthelatter.In our region, this material is widely used to build all the low-cost traditional houses and furniture, to make granaries storage of dry products, to build chicken coops, to make decoration. Thus, various jobs are organized around this material, with the fight against poverty. To our knowledge, information on its thermal properties is almost nonexistent. The experimental determination of the transverse thermal properties of the dry shell, the dry marrow, and the whole dry bamboo helped to find, for each, a specific heat, a thermal diffusivity, a thermal conductivity, and finally a thermal effusivity. -

Niles WITH INTRODUCTION AND BOTANICAL NOTES By Aones Chase nrntODTJCTiON The Essai d?une Nouvelle Agrostographie ; ou Nouveaux Genres des Graminees; avec figures representant les Oaracteres de tous les Genres, by A. M. F. J. Palisot de Beauvois, published in 1812, is, from the standpoint of the nomenclature of grasses, a very important work, its importance being due principally to its innumerable errors, less so because of its scientific value. In this small volume 69 new genera are proposed and some 640 new species, new binomials, and new names are published. Of the 69 genera proposed 31 are to-day recognized as valid, and of the 640 names about 61 are commonly accepted. There is probably not a grass flora of any considerable region anywhere in the world that does not contain some of Beauvois' names. Many of the new names are made in such haphazard fashion that they are incorrectly listed in the Index Kewensis. There are, besides, a number of misspelled names that have found their way into botanical literature. The inaccuracies are so numerous and the cita- tions so incomplete that only a trained bibliographer* could solve the many puzzles presented. Cornelia D. Niles in connection with her work on the bibliography of grasses, maintained in the form of a card catalogue in the Grass Herbarium, worked out the basis in literature of each of these new names. The botanical problems involved, the interpretation of descriptions and figures, were worked out by Agnes Chase, who is also respon- sible for the translation and summaries from the Advertisement, Introduction, and Principles. -

Overstreet, had made me acquainted with Smithsonian’s treasure house of natural history rare books, came out from the vault carrying a luxurious folio, which she placed on a lectern positioned in front of me. Having settled the paper work, she left me alone with a delicate work of art and science. In the tranquility of the reading room I opened the pages of Flore d’Oware en de Bénin, en Afrique. This book contains a fascinating study of the flora discovered in the late 1780s by the Frenchman Ambrose-Marie-Joseph Palisot de Beauvois (1752-1820) in a region situated near the delta of the Niger – which is in itself remarkable, taking into account the fact that European explorers had not yet determined the location of the swamps where the waters of that mighty stream mingle with those of the Atlantic Ocean. -

BARTOLOZZI &C.MONTE Abstract Two African species of the genus Figulus Macleay, 1819 are reviewed. Figulus sublaevis (PALISOT DE BEAUVOIS, 1805) is redescribed, and compared with the closely allied F. anthracinus KLUG, 1833, from which it differs in external morphology and genitalic structures. Figulus anthracinus from Madagascar, hitherto regarded as a synonym of F. sublaevis, is resurrected as valid species (stat.res.) and its lectotype is designated. Lectotypes are also designated for F. nossibenus KRIESCHE, 1921, F. monilifer PARRY, 1862, and F. sublaevis (PALISOT DE BEAUVOIS, 1805). Key words: Coleoptera, Lucanidae, Figulus, Africa. Introduction Many authors (e.g. BURMEISTER 1847, PARRY 1873, DIDIER &SÉGUY 1953, BRINCK 1956, BENESH 1960, MAES 1992b, BARTOLOZZI &WERNER 2004) considered Figulus anthracinus KLUG, 1833 as a synonym, variety, or subspecies of F. sublaevis (PALISOT DE BEAUVOIS, 1805); other authors (e.g. PARRY 1864b, ALBERS 1885, KRAJCIK 2001, 2003) listed F. anthracinus as a distinct species. KRAJCIK (2001, 2003) considered F. anthracinus a “species incertae sedis”. During our revision of the Figulus species from continental Africa (MONTE &BARTOLOZZI 2005) we had the chance to examine many hundreds of Figulus specimens from the Afrotropical Region. -

The original was taken from a Macintosh file in a pre-Unicode format, mixing a variety of fonts. I have tried to convert it into a consistent format by checking transcriptions against other documents. I originally hoped, as with many other documents, it would be helpful to travel back to the Delta area to get confirmation and extend the database. However, security conditions in the Delta make this unlikely in the immediate future. As a consequence, the elicitation part of the document is likely to remain static.
