We provide an overview of the Wichí community, describing in brief their interaction with objects and events in the natural world, and the naming systems they use to describe key folkbiological concepts. We then report the results of two behavioral studies, each designed to deepen our understanding of the acquisition of the fundamental folkbiological concepts animate and living thing in Wichí adults and children. These results converge well with evidence from other communities.Wichí children and adults appreciate these fundamental concepts; both are strongly aligned with the Wichí community-wide belief systems. This work underscores the importance of considering cultural and linguistic factors in studying the acquisition of fundamental concepts about the biological world.

History of Anthropology Newsletter 38.1 (June 2011) / 9 The Renewal of Gran Chaco Studies Edgardo Krebs1 and Jose Braunstein2 Interest in the Gran Chaco among social scientists during most of the 20th century has not been high. In comparison to the Amazon, or the Andes, this enormous territory, over 500,000 square miles, has inspired a modest output of scholarly studies, its very existence as a distinct and important ecological and ethnographic area seemingly lost in the shadows of the other two neighboring giants. Its vast dry plains—“a park land with patches of hardwoods intermingled with grasslands”3—is the second largest biome in South America, after the Amazon. It is shared by four countries, Paraguay, Bolivia, Brazil and Argentina; and in all of them it represents pockets of wilderness coming under the increasing stress of demographic expansion and economic exploitation. In all of these countries the Chaco is also an ethnographic frontier, still open after centuries of contact, and still the refuge of last resort of a few elusive Indian groups. The comparative neglect of the Gran Chaco as an area of interest for anthropologists is also remarkable considering that the Provincia Paraguaria of the Jesuit order yielded a number of Chaco ethnographies extraordinary in their narrative complexity and analytical edge, and that, closer in time to us, one of the pioneers of modern fieldwork, Guido Boggiani (1861–1902), died tragically in the Chaco, during the course of an expedition.

Fighting With Wine: Ruin, Resistance and Renewal in a Qom Community of Northern Argentina Abstract This study examines public binge drinking among the Qom (Toba) ex-foragers of Formosa, northern Argentina. Based upon 15 months of ethnographic fieldwork in a peri-urban Qom barrio (Lot 84), this analysis relates binge drinking to Qom ethnohistory, community life, and interactions with the Argentine state. The public, performative nature of Qom binge drinking is explored; intoxication is shown to convey in sometimes violent public spectacle the pathos of their socioeconomic marginality, reinforce non- indigenous Argentines’ entrenched perceptions of violent “Indians”, and paradoxically provide the Qom with vehicle for continued colonial resistance. Many Qom view drinking problems as rooted in Lot 84’s close proximity to the city (Formosa) relative to more rural Qom villages. Thus they reference a continuum of health that runs from urban, non-indigenous spaces to the rural bush country where foods—including home-brewed alcohol—are healthful rather than harmful.

Golluscio Área: Lingüística UNIVERSIDAD DE BUENOS AIRES FACULTAD DE FILOSOFIA Y LETRAS 1 Resumen La presente Tesis de Doctorado se centra en la documentación y descripción de la lengua ayoreo, perteneciente a la familia zamuco. Si bien la lengua se habla en Paraguay y Bolivia, los datos aquí presentados fueron recolectados en cinco trabajos de campo en la comunidad de Campo Loro, República del Paraguay, entre 2011 y 2016, de acuerdo con los postulados de la lingüística de la documentación. En estas visitas se recolectaron más de doscientas horas de audio y numerosas filmaciones en alta calidad. A su vez, se trabajó con más de veinte consultantes de ambos sexos y de variadas edades. El objetivo central de esta investigación es describir el funcionamiento de la combinación clausal en lengua ayoreo desde una perspectiva tipológica y funcional. El marco teórico elegido es el de la Gramática del Rol y la Referencia. Se realiza también una caracterización general de la lengua en la que se puntualiza en los temas que ayudan a la mejor comprensión del funcionamiento de las cláusulas en ayoreo. Entre las contribuciones originales de esta investigación doctoral al conocimiento de la lengua ayoreo y las lenguas de América del Sur se encuentran las siguientes: - la identificación de una estrategia de tiempo nominal - sistematización de los verbos de movimiento

Introduction1 Among the indigenous languages of the Andean region of Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, northern Chile and northern Argentina, Quechuan and Aymaran have traditionally occupied a dominant position. Both Quechuan and Aymaran are language families of several million speakers each. Quechuan consists of a conglomerate of geographically defined varieties, traditionally referred to as Quechua “dialects”, notwithstanding the fact that mutual intelligibility is often lacking. Present-day Aymaran consists of two distinct languages that are not normally referred to as “dialects”. The absence of a demonstrable genetic relationship between the Quechuan and Aymaran language families, accompanied by a lack of recognizable external genetic connections, suggests a long period of independent development, which may hark back to a period of incipient subsistence agriculture roughly dated between 8000 and 5000 BP (Torero 2002: 123–124), long before the Andean civilization attained its highest stages of complexity.

Scarpa (Received November 13, 2009) Summary The Gran Chaco is the most extensive wooded region in South America after the Amazon Rain Forest, and is also a pole of cultural diversity. This study summarises and updates a total of 573 ethnobotanical data on the use of wild food plants by 10 indigenous groups of the Gran Chaco, as published in various bibliographical sources. In addition, estimates are given as to the levels of endemicity of those species, and intercultural comparative analyses of the plants used are made. A total of 179 native vegetable taxa are used as food of which 69 are endemic to, or characteristic of, this biogeographical region. In all, almost half these edible species belong to the Cactaceae, Apocynaceae, Fabaceae and Solanaceae botanical families, and the most commonly used genera are Prosopis, Opuntia, Solanum, Capparis, Morrenia and Passiflora. The average number of food taxa used per ethnic group is around 60 species (SD = 12). The Eastern Tobas, Wichi, Chorote and Maká consume the greatest diversity of plants. Two groups of indigenous peoples can be distinguished according to their relative degree of edible plants species shared among them be more or less than 50 % of all species used. A more detailed look reveals a correlation between the uses of food plants and the location of the various ethnic groups along the regional principal rainfall gradient.
