2020 is a special year for Lalique in various respects. It will be marked by a number of occasions that demand fitting celebrations. These are milestones that exemplify the timeless qualities of Lalique. For more than a century, right up to the present day, Lalique has been at the avant-garde with its creativity, innovation and projects. This year we celebrate the 100th anniversary of the villa built by René Lalique in Wingen-sur-Moder, Alsace, a haven in the midst of unspoilt nature. The villa has been transformed into a magnificent five-star hotel, with Relais & Châteaux accreditation, which has retained a relaxing and inspiring ambience worthy of the residence built by the master glassmaker,

In this issue, I would like to invite you to discover the beauties of nature, as René Lalique did, observing the natural world through the eyes of a child. Marc Silvio Denz Larminaux, our Artistic and Creative Director, displays the same attention to Chairman and CEO detail as René Lalique before him. His eye and talent are focused on creating LALIQUE designs that challenge the expertise of our teams at the Lalique factory. We are proud to announce the addition of a new Meilleur Ouvrier de France (Best Craftsman in France), the seventh at Wingen-sur-Moder. This natural world is also part of our creative heritage, rich in floral compositions appearing on avant-garde jewellery such as the Pensées brooch of 1903, the Pervenches powder box of 1929 and the Muguet vase launched this year. Nature is also the force that shaped René Lalique’s garden, dominated by a magnificent cedar of Lebanon, on which the sun shines as brightly as the notes of our latest perfume creation, Soleil, which invites the wearer to awaken to the world each morning with a radiant smile. A love of nature brought me finally to the wilds of the Scottish Highlands, the source of malt whisky. The malt made by The Glenturret is like a fragrance, a perfect balance of aromatic variations. In April 2019, motivated by shared values and marked complementarity, Lalique Group acquired 50% of the capital in this distillery, the oldest in Scotland. For Lalique Group, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, it is an opportunity to continue, as we have done since 2015, to develop hotels and restaurants offering fine gastronomy, which epitomize the Lalique art of living. The hospitality industry is a domain in which we can express our savoir-faire, by offering immersive experiences in an exceptional decorative ambience. This also applies to the new Lalique suite, conceived by designer Patrick Hellmann for the Prince de Galles hotel in Paris, a setting which demonstrates how little the Art Deco of René Lalique’s era has aged. Finally, because René Lalique was above all else an artist, I like to maintain a connection with contemporary talents who have the same passion for the material. After the striking work with Arik Levy and his signature sculpture RockStone last year, we have shared our expertise this year with Chinese artist Han Meilin, named a UNESCO Artist for Peace. He has reinterpreted his iconic panda in crystal. As always, art and the art of living come together at Lalique.

Lalique Museum presents the art of table decoration

Lalique Museum has staged a major temporary exhibition every year since its opening. This summer it is “The table, an art in itself”, enabling visitors to discover the subtle arts of table decoration and through them the finesse of everyday objects created by René © D. Already the proud home to six artisans bearing the prestigious title Meilleurs Ouvriers de France (Best Craftsmen in France), the Lalique ateliers gained a new MOF on 13 May 2019. Anthony da Silva can wear the blue, white and red ribbon of his medal with pride. He was presented with the award in a ceremony at the Sorbonne by the French Minister of Labour, Muriel Pénicaud, who declared herself most impressed by the talents of the 26-year-old artist. This year, of eight laureates in the glassworks category, Anthony was the only sculptor; and in all the 106 trades represented, he was the youngest recipient. He earned the coveted title by creating a bust of Tutankhamun, sculpted from a cube of crystal. Working alone outside his normal workday routine, it took him 300 hours to complete this exceptional piece. Passion for cheese – a whole story

It is well known that in France most gourmets are fervent advocates of cheese. There are so many varieties and ways to enjoy them that cheese could well constitute a meal in itself. No one at Lalique would tell you any different. Bernard Antony, an artisanal cheesemaker established for 40 years at Vieux Ferrette in the south of Alsace has been entrusted with the selection of cheeses presented at Lalique’s gourmet restaurants: Villa René Lalique, Château Hochberg and Château Lafaurie-Peyraguey. Renowned the world over for his savoir-faire, he expresses his

passion for cheese in a book that has just been published. René Lalique’s villa turns 100

People don’t travel to Wingen-sur-Moder by accident. History teaches us that those who came to this corner of Alsace over the centuries did so for a good reason – perhaps an opportunity or an impulse. It was no different for René Lalique. Life sometimes seems an endless cycle of new beginnings. In 1920, the artist acquired a property that, in the course of time, would bring together two kindred spirits, two personalities who have left their mark on this part of the world. There are many similarities between the avant-garde passion of the artist and the enthusiasm of the collector Silvio Denz, now Chairman and CEO of Lalique, who has devoted much of the last five years to bringing a Sleeping Beauty back to life. Welcome to the villa René Lalique built in Alsace, which has become both a treasure house for Lalique’s most exquisite crystal creations and a luxurious haunt of gourmets travelling through Alsace.

Marc Larminaux joined Lalique in 2002 and has served as Artistic and Creative Director since 2013. In this role he has left his mark on the crystal collections. As guardian of the René Lalique style, he seeks the perfect balance between design and art, while also working on special requests. One example is his collaborative work on spirit decanters. In the following interview, he reveals some secrets about these crystal objects.

How does The Glenturret, which will probably have its own decanter soon, inspire you? The Glenturret is not one collaborative project among many, given that the business was acquired by Lalique Group last year. Founded before 1763, it is the oldest Scottish distiller of single malt whisky in existence. The distilling process in use is still largely manual and craft-based. As Silvio Denz has announced,

Finally, what makes a decanter special? A decanter is an object that poses a challenge. Sometimes we produce pieces with few technical constraints, but which are highly artistic. A similarly audacious process was also going on in Lalique’s glassworks, where a bold decision was made to leave the timeless form of the Beluga Epicure decanter unchanged, but explore the technical possibilities of producing it using black crystal. Working with black crystal requires Lalique’s craftsmen to exercise their utmost care and skills. The black crystal is difficult to work with as it cools very gently, fragilising Epicure’s decorative art. In order to sublimate and improve the visibility of the decorative art, a wafer-thin application of platinum is carefully stamped onto the female forms, embellishing the decanter, in order to perfectly retain their essential shape. So complex is production of these unique black crystal decanters that from every 100 that are blown and sandblasted by the virtuoso glass masters, only 10 will actually leave the atelier, as some 90% will suffer minuscule but unac- ceptable flaws, such is the endless search for total perfection of both Lalique and Beluga. Do you know Yuan-Yuan and Meng-Meng? They are the latest newborn in the House of Lalique! These adorable pandas, a male and a female, are a celebration of the friendship between France and China. They first saw the light of day in summer 2019 at the crystal works in Alsace, born of a marriage between Lalique’s savoir-faire and the creativity of the renowned Chinese artist Han Meilin.

Born in China in 1936, in the province of , Han Meilen has pursued his multidisciplinary artistic passions for more than 60 years, creating work and teaching in the fields of painting, calligraphy, ceramics and the history of the visual arts. From an early age, the artist has drawn his inspiration

The German designer is renowned the world over for lavish interiors, fashion and design.
