Unpredictable because budget cuts, program losses, and evaluation procedures that require increased documentation create tension and exhaustion. Yet in the midst of these demands there is the opportunity to demonstrate to a diverse audience the positive effects of music education. If we are convinced and confident that we are capable of enhancing and even changing lives with music education, it is time to unite and ramp-up our advocacy efforts. LMEA remains involved in efforts to prepare teachers for successful implementation of all the components of a Compass evaluation. Many of our teachers are leaders in the Compass model in their schools and districts. This reflects well on our profession. Our united efforts in this area are one of the major reasons that LMEA is important to the overall picture of education in our state. As a small state we enjoy an ever-growing annual professional development conference, a digital professional journal, a website and an e-newsletter. Yet LMEA’s greatest resource is its members. YOU are who we value. Your presence insures that we collectively attain our goals. All that LMEA offers to its members comes from its members, both the experienced and the novice innovators. LMEA maintains a forum that provides an open link for collaboration, an attitude of cooperation, and a channel of communication among all its educators. I encourage you to be involved as we evolve. Make the effort to stay informed, to contribute ideas and feedback, to volunteer (especially for assessments, for the conference, and for advocacy) to attend as many events as possible, and to make liberal use of our resources. When each member gives, we all gain. Will you be the face of leadership in our future? How can our magazine, our website, our e-newsletter enhance your daily endeavors in the classroom? What topics, needs or interests would you like to see presented in our conference clinics? What expertise or experience might you contribute to the members of LMEA? Together, the power of YOU becomes the power of US. Participate, Educate, Advocate. From the Past President Sharon McNamara-Home Conference Registration: We are now able to take members’ conference registration online! You may still pay by check but now are also able to securely pay by credit card. Registering online will generate an email receipt with all of your registration information. Submit this receipt to your bookkeeper or boosters club or keep it for your tax records. If you have any difficulties with this process, email [email protected]. District Director Elections: Elections for members of the LMEA Board of Directors alternate years. This past spring (even-numbered years) you elected new division chairs and the president-elect. This next spring (odd-numbered years) you will elect District Directors in all districts. As immediate past-president, I serve as Election Chair. If you are willing to serve your district as District Director or would like to nominate someone, please email, mail a note to me, or submit the online form no later than December 31, 2016. Include the information below. A description of the District Director’s responsibilities can be found on our website under “Resources -> Board of Directors – Job Descriptions and Form.” Your email or note must include: a statement indicating your willingness to serve as district director, your name, school where you currently teach (or “retired” if you are no longer teaching), district you belong to, email address, and phone number. If you are nominating someone include: a statement indicating that you have confirmed that person’s willingness to run, all of the previous information about them, as well as your name, email address, phone number, school where you teach (or “retired”), and your district number. Email this information to sharon.mcnamara-horne@ stpsb.org, mail it to Sharon McNamara-Horne, Elections Committee Chair, 18449 Hosmer Mill Rd., Covington, LA 70435, or fill in and submit the online form (Resources -> Board of Directors – Job Descriptions and Form) by the deadline. See you at the professional development conference and All-State concerts! FOLLOWING TWO RECORDS ON THE TOP 10 JAZZ CHARTS ‘TRANSIENT JOURNEY’ (2010) AND ‘FOR THE PEOPLE’ (2012) PHAREZ WHITTED IS SET TO RELEASE HIS NEXT ALBUM ‘THE TREE OF LIFE’ (2014) ON TRUTH REVOLUTION RECORDS. FEATURING: JONATHAN WOOD, EDDIE BAYARD, LOVELL BRADFORD, & GREG ARTRY Powerhouse trumpeter Pharez Whitted continues to showcase his talents on his most adventurous album to date, The Tree of Life. Whitted displays “…remarkable command of the trumpet and his broad stroke as a composer, both of which are =irmly rooted in the post- bop tradition.” With this new CD, Whitted adds a funk and soul element to create an album that is impressively innovative while still steeped in the jazz tradition. He states that The Tree of Life is music that is “…not just about the artist but music that is for the people to lift them up.” Many musicians come from musical families, but few can boast of having one as large as Pharez’s. Even before he was born his parents, drummer Thomas Whitted Sr. and singing bassist, Virtue Hampton Whitted were members of a jazz orchestra called the Hampton Band. It included Pharez’s uncle the legendary trombonist, Slide Hampton. His grandparents regularly invited Indianapolis musicians such as Freddie Hubbard, Wes Montgomery and his brothers Monk and Buddy to practice at their house. Being surrounded by musicians from such a young age, one can only imagine this musical lineage has helped make Pharez a force to be reckoned with. Joining Pharez on The Tree of Life is an exceptional group of musicians including, Jonathan Wood (bass), Eddie Bayard (saxophone), Lovell Bradford (piano, organ, Rhodes), and Greg Artry (drums).

  • Jazz and Radio in the United States: Mediation, Genre, and Patronage
Jazz and Radio in the United States: Mediation, Genre, and Patronage Aaron Joseph Johnson Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2014 © 2014 Aaron Joseph Johnson All rights reserved ABSTRACT Jazz and Radio in the United States: Mediation, Genre, and Patronage Aaron Joseph Johnson This dissertation is a study of jazz on American radio. The dissertation's meta-subjects are mediation, classification, and patronage in the presentation of music via distribution channels capable of reaching widespread audiences. The dissertation also addresses questions of race in the representation of jazz on radio. A central claim of the dissertation is that a given direction in jazz radio programming reflects the ideological, aesthetic, and political imperatives of a given broadcasting entity. I further argue that this ideological deployment of jazz can appear as conservative or progressive programming philosophies, and that these tendencies reflect discursive struggles over the identity of jazz. The first chapter, "Jazz on Noncommercial Radio," describes in some detail the current (circa 2013) taxonomy of American jazz radio. The remaining chapters are case studies of different aspects of jazz radio in the United States. Chapter 2, "Jazz is on the Left End of the Dial," presents considerable detail to the way the music is positioned on specific noncommercial stations. Chapter 3, "Duke Ellington and Radio," uses Ellington's multifaceted radio career (1925-1953) as radio bandleader, radio celebrity, and celebrity DJ to examine the medium's shifting relationship with jazz and black American creative ambition.

Conducting Studies Conference 2016 24th – 26th June St Anne’s College University of Oxford Conducting Studies Conference 2016 24-26 June, St Anne’s College WELCOME It is with great pleasure that we welcome you to St Anne’s College and the Oxford Conducting Institute Conducting Studies Conference 2016. The conference brings together 44 speakers from around the globe presenting on a wide range of topics demonstrating the rich and multifaceted realm of conducting studies. The practice of conducting has significant impact on music-making across a wide variety of ensembles and musical contexts. While professional organizations and educational institutions have worked to develop the field through conducting masterclasses and conferences focused on professional development, and academic researchers have sought to explicate various aspects of conducting through focussed studies, there has yet to be a space where this knowledge has been brought together and explored as a cohesive topic. The OCI Conducting Studies Conference aims to redress this by bringing together practitioners and researchers into productive dialogue, promoting practice as research and raising awareness of the state of research in the field of conducting studies. We hope that this conference will provide a fruitful exchange of ideas and serve as a lightning rod for the further development of conducting studies research. The band performs at concerts throughout the year, and has played at numerous music festivals in the Michigan area, including the Festival of the Arts in Grand Rapids. They were invited to perform at the prestigious Swing Central Jazz in Savannah, Georgia this spring. In the eleven years that Savannah has held Swing Central Jazz, Northview is only the second band from Michigan invited to participate. Quite an honor for these student musicians! Director Greg Wells actually attended Northview High School, and returned to take on the director position at his alma mater.
