International Conducting Studies Conference 2018 21St – 23Rd June St Anne’S College University of Oxford International Conducting Studies Conference 2018 21st – 23rd June St Anne’s College University of Oxford International Conducting 2018 Studies Conference 21-23 June, St Anne’s College WELCOME It is with great pleasure that we welcome you to St Anne’s College and the Oxford Conducting Institute International Conducting Studies Conference 2018. The conference brings together 40 speakers from around the globe, presenting on a wide range of topics that demonstrate the rich and multifaceted realm of conducting studies. The discipline of conducting is at the core of a multitude of global musical endeavours, continually shaping musical practices and experiences in substantial ways. Scholars and practitioners have explored, and continue to explore, historical, philosophical, social and psychological aspects of conducting across a wide range of practices; The OCIICSC 2018 aims to bring together these diverse perspectives in the pursuit of a shared and more cohesive knowledge. While professional organizations and educational institutions have worked to develop the field through conducting master-classes and conferences focused on professional development, and academic researchers have sought to explicate various aspects of conducting through focussed studies, researchers and practitioners are rarely in dialogue about these findings and experiences. The OCIICSC 2018 seeks to redress this by continuing the conversation fostered at the 2016 conference, again bringing together practitioners and researchers to participate in productive and scholarly dialogue. We hope that this conference will provide a fruitful exchange of ideas and again serve as a catalyst for the further development of the topic of Conducting Studies. The Institute prioritises equality, and nurtures ability in all types of conducting. The OCI is a partner in the Oxfordshire Music Education Hub, and works closely with the Faculty of Music and St Anne’s College, Oxford University. Workshops regularly feature local organisations and have included the Oxford Philharmonic, the Oxford University Philharmonia, the St Anne’s Camerata, the Oxford University Music Society, and the Oxfordshire County Youth Orchestra. The OCI has also delivered workshops in Brazil (2014), Portugal (2017), and for a variety of music education organisations in the UK. The OCI was founded in 2013 by Dr John Traill (course director, FHS Instrumental Conducting, Faculty of Music, Oxford University), consolidating ten years experience providing tuition at Oxford University, Bristol University, and at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. In 2015 Cayenna Ponchione-Bailey became Conducting Associate, and additionally Director of Research in 2017. The OCI is committed to exploring new and innovative avenues for scholarship within the field of conducting, promoting a dialogue between research and practice, and raising awareness of the profession at all levels. He entered the Petrograd Conservatory at age 13 and studied piano with Leonid Nikolayev and composition with Maximilian Steinberg.     Use of Materials and Resources Related to the Holocaust The nature of the subject of the Holocaust and the possible associated emotional impact means that teachers must take special care to preview all materials in their entirety. This is particularly true of the supplemental resources found for the study of the Holocaust. Age, grade level and content area suggestions need to be considered as well. Each class is unique and what is appropriate for one class might not be suitable for another. A designation by the publisher for the intended audience (Primary, Intermediate, Middle School, etc.) does not always accurately take into consideration the ages, reading level, or emotional maturity of the students. Picture books may still contain content that is not appropriate for primary or intermediate elementary students. Visual materials (videos, DVDs) need to be viewed in their entirety prior to use. This includes materials in the media center. Make sure that the school-based administrator is aware of any materials that are being used prior to a reaction from parents or the community. Use all procedures/processes that are in place at your school site regarding the showing of videos. Many times, students have seen movies or read books with their parents or guardians. This does not mean the same materials are appropriate for classroom viewing or use. Use common sense when choosing materials in print, auditory or visual formats.     MASTER PLAYERS FESTIVAL: BIOGRAPHIES Violin faculty Justin Chou is a performer, teacher and concert producer. He has assisted and performed in productions such as the Master Players Concert Series, IVSO 60th anniversary, Asian Invasion recital series combining classical music and comedy, the 2012 TEDxUD event that streamed live across the Internet and personal projects like Violins4ward, which recently produced a concert titled “No Violence, Just Violins” to promote violence awareness and harmonious productivity. Chou’s current project, Verdant, is a spring classical series based in Wilmington, Delaware, that presents innovative concerts by growing music into daily life, combining classical performance with unlikely life passions. As an orchestral musician, he spent three years as concertmaster of the Illinois Valley Symphony, with duties that included solo performances with the orchestra. Chou also has performed in various orchestras in principal positions, including an international tour to Colombia with the University of Delaware Symphony Orchestra, and in the state of Wisconsin, with the University of Wisconsin Symphony Orchestra, the Lake Geneva Symphony Orchestra and the Beloit-Janesville Symphony. Chou received his master of music degree from UD under Prof. Xiang Gao, with a full assistantship, and his undergraduate degree from the University of Wisconsin, with Profs. Felicia Moye and Vartan Manoogian, where he received the esteemed Ivan Galamian Award. Chou also has received honorable mention in competitions like the Milwaukee Young Artist and Youth Symphony Orchestras competitions.     Timothy Lines (Clarinet) Timothy studied at the Royal College of Music with Michael Collins and now enjoys a wide- ranging career as a clarinettist. He has played with all the major symphony orchestras in London as well as with chamber groups including London Sinfonietta and the Nash Ensemble. From 1999 to 2003 he was Principal Clarinet of the London Symphony Orchestra and was also chairman of the orchestra during his last year there. From September 2004 to January 2006 he was section leader clarinet of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, London Mozart Players Wind Trio when he left to focus on his freelance career. He plays on original instruments with the English Baroque Soloists, the Orchestre Revolutionnaire et Romantique and the Orchestra of Thursday 12th March 2020 at 7.30 pm the Age of Enlightenment and is also frequently engaged to record film music and pop music Cavendish Hall, Edensor tracks. Timothy is Professor of Clarinet at both the Royal College of Music and the Royal Academy of Music, and is the clarinet coach for the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain. In March 2016 he was awarded a Fellowship of the Royal College of Music and was later that year invited to become Principal Clarinet of the London Mozart Players. Concert Champêtre H. In German, Birkenau means “stand of birch trees.” Ethel Buisson took this photograph as she followed in the footsteps of her grandfather, Srul Ruger, who died in Auschwitz in 1942. Her trip was published in 2014 in the journal Tenou’a. 1 An in-depth work that is more essential than ever Currently, Europe is experiencing a resurgence of anti-Semitism. This disturbing reality is due to an increasingly violent and vociferous minority. The association of disparate movements under the banner of anti-Semitism and conspiracy theories should be a warning. Ridiculed and even denied, the Shoah has been exploited with this hate speech, which shamelessly tramples on the memory of the victims. This dangerous excess is unacceptable; fortunately, it has been widely condemned by public authorities and society at large. Faced with this reality, the Foundation for the Memory of the Shoah intends to pursue the in-depth work it began 13 years ago: education, based on a knowledge of history and action that refuses any “competing memories,” combined with public vigilance. Schools are crucial to this work, and I would like to congratulate the many teachers who, with their students, pursue productive pedagogical initiatives every year. The year 2013 was also marked by two projects, which the Foundation is particularly proud to have supported. The first is the memory site inaugurated in Le Chambon-sur-Lignon, a place that presents the history of the Vivarais Plateau, whose residents sheltered hundreds of Jews fleeing the persecutions of the war.
