We are living through challenging times, but CYSO—by the resilience of our students and families and the creativity of our artistic and administrative team—perseveres. In fact, CYSO is growing! In this time of mostly virtual instruction, we have added five new artistic staff members and our entire team are giving more of themselves than ever. We have temporarily lost our two most important tools for teaching music: the in-person rehearsal LETTER MUSIC DIRECTOR'S and the performance. However, this loss has inspired a whirlwind of creativity and experimentation as conductors re-learn how to teach the subject they know and love. Though in-person chamber music and other small group meetings continue, our large groups are working in a completely new way through a broad variety of online rehearsals, meetings, and masterclasses. Students are learning the art of recording since music must now be sent back- and-forth across the internet. They are studying non-instrumental musicianship skills that will prepare them to excel when performing returns and give them the tools and habits to master not only music, but other skills as well. Students are receiving more individual attention than ever as we find new ways to keep them learning and growing. Despite the loss of concerts, we now connect to a worldwide audience through streamed programming such as our virtual performance videos and online masterclass series, where this semester alone featured CYSO alumni Anthony McGill, (New York Philharmonic principal clarinetist), Luke Fieweger (Seattle Symphony associate principal bassoonist), Mary Bowden (trumpet soloist and chamber musician), and longtime friend to the organization and now CYSO parent, renowned violinist Rachel Barton Pine. Our mission is to inspire and cultivate personal excellence through music. That work must continue. With your support, nothing can stop us. CYSO’S MISSION IS TO Warm regards, INSPIRE AND CULTIVATE Allen Tinkham PERSONAL EXCELLENCE Music Director THROUGH MUSIC 8 9 EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR'S LETTER Dear Friends, Please join us in celebrating CYSO's fall 2020 student performances! In our 74 years of produc- ing youth orchestra programming, we’ve never had a fall like this. Despite the inherent challenges of this year, CYSO continues to serve as the musical homebase for our nearly 800 students, and I am so inspired by the creativity and resilience shown by the entire CYSO family. We have reinvented and reimagined literally every element of what we do as music educators this year—how we teach technique and musicality, how we facilitate teamwork and LETTER EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR'S develop social bonds among students, how we evaluate progress and help resolve challenges in students' home practice environments. Much of what we are learning this fall will help us come back even stronger when we are finally able to reconvene in person again. Our fall virtual concerts demonstrate the hard work of our students, who remain deeply dedicated to musical and personal growth. These performances were coached by a growing and incredibly talented CYSO artistic team, and facilitated by our incomparable administrative team. As we look toward the months ahead, we are confident that the CYSO community will meet each new challenge with the same commitment to excellence you have come to expect from us. Many thanks to all our CYSO families and everyone who has supported CYSO’s work this year and always. Enjoy the performances! • Following Two Records on the Top 10 Jazz Charts
FOLLOWING TWO RECORDS ON THE TOP 10 JAZZ CHARTS ‘TRANSIENT JOURNEY’ (2010) AND ‘FOR THE PEOPLE’ (2012) PHAREZ WHITTED IS SET TO RELEASE HIS NEXT ALBUM ‘THE TREE OF LIFE’ (2014) ON TRUTH REVOLUTION RECORDS. FEATURING: JONATHAN WOOD, EDDIE BAYARD, LOVELL BRADFORD, & GREG ARTRY Powerhouse trumpeter Pharez Whitted continues to showcase his talents on his most adventurous album to date, The Tree of Life. Whitted displays “…remarkable command of the trumpet and his broad stroke as a composer, both of which are =irmly rooted in the post- bop tradition.” With this new CD, Whitted adds a funk and soul element to create an album that is impressively innovative while still steeped in the jazz tradition. He states that The Tree of Life is music that is “…not just about the artist but music that is for the people to lift them up.” Many musicians come from musical families, but few can boast of having one as large as Pharez’s. Even before he was born his parents, drummer Thomas Whitted Sr. and singing bassist, Virtue Hampton Whitted were members of a jazz orchestra called the Hampton Band. It included Pharez’s uncle the legendary trombonist, Slide Hampton. His grandparents regularly invited Indianapolis musicians such as Freddie Hubbard, Wes Montgomery and his brothers Monk and Buddy to practice at their house. Being surrounded by musicians from such a young age, one can only imagine this musical lineage has helped make Pharez a force to be reckoned with. Joining Pharez on The Tree of Life is an exceptional group of musicians including, Jonathan Wood (bass), Eddie Bayard (saxophone), Lovell Bradford (piano, organ, Rhodes), and Greg Artry (drums).

  • Jazz and Radio in the United States: Mediation, Genre, and Patronage
Jazz and Radio in the United States: Mediation, Genre, and Patronage Aaron Joseph Johnson Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2014 © 2014 Aaron Joseph Johnson All rights reserved ABSTRACT Jazz and Radio in the United States: Mediation, Genre, and Patronage Aaron Joseph Johnson This dissertation is a study of jazz on American radio. The dissertation's meta-subjects are mediation, classification, and patronage in the presentation of music via distribution channels capable of reaching widespread audiences. The dissertation also addresses questions of race in the representation of jazz on radio. A central claim of the dissertation is that a given direction in jazz radio programming reflects the ideological, aesthetic, and political imperatives of a given broadcasting entity. I further argue that this ideological deployment of jazz can appear as conservative or progressive programming philosophies, and that these tendencies reflect discursive struggles over the identity of jazz. The first chapter, "Jazz on Noncommercial Radio," describes in some detail the current (circa 2013) taxonomy of American jazz radio. The remaining chapters are case studies of different aspects of jazz radio in the United States. Chapter 2, "Jazz is on the Left End of the Dial," presents considerable detail to the way the music is positioned on specific noncommercial stations. Chapter 3, "Duke Ellington and Radio," uses Ellington's multifaceted radio career (1925-1953) as radio bandleader, radio celebrity, and celebrity DJ to examine the medium's shifting relationship with jazz and black American creative ambition.

He’s taken on the new role as Chicago’s Youth Symphony Orchestra (CYSO) Jazz Director and Howard Reich at the Chicago Tribune described Pharez perfectly - “Few Chicago musician-educators are more qualified than Whitted to build the new band, for he commands a richly deserved reputation as a trumpet virtuoso, seasoned educator and irrepressible champion of the music.” Whitted is humble with his legacy and his deep roots in music go as far back as the 1930’s in Indianapolis where the Hampton Family Band first began performing. His mother VIrtue, his uncle Slide Hampton and the other 10 siblings (12 in total) laid the foundation with their self-educated and courageous father, Clarke “Deacon” Hampton at the helm. With that level of determination and talent, Whitted was destined to inherit the gift of music. He began his career in 1982 not long after earning his Master’s Degree at Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. He’s been on staff at Chicago State University The Ohio State University and Wabash College. He recorded his first self-entitled album, ‘Pharez Whitted’ with Motown in 1994 and continued recording solo albums ever since. He’s performed with Nancy Wilson, Freddie Hubbard, Slide Hampton, John Mellencamp, Chaka Khan, Ahmad Jamal, George Duke, Kirk Whalum, Elvin Jones, Branford Marsalis and Meshell Ndegeocello to name a few. He is currently a clinician Jazz at Lincoln Center youth outreach program, he’s a staple at Rivinia’s Jazz Scholar program in Chicago and his newest role at CYSO to help find its identity and sound while bringing new faces to the young jazz scene of Chicago.
