Professor Brendan Barrett Brendan is a specially appointed professor at Osaka University in the Center for the Study of Co* Design. His core areas of expertise include urban transitions, ethical cities, sustainability science, and science/research communication. Previously he was a senior lecturer in the RMIT School of Global, Urban and Social Studies and program manager for the Masters of International Urban and Environmental Management, and before that he was a research fellow with the Global Compact Cities Programme, hosted by RMIT. Brendan worked with the United Nations in Japan between 1995 and 2015, with the United Nations University (UNU) and the UN Environment Programme. He holds an adjunct professorship with RMIT and a visiting professorship at the United Nations University Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability.

Professor Tim Colmer Tim Colmer (BSc. Agric. 1A Hons, UWA; PhD, UC Davis) is a plant physiologist and he is Acting Pro Vice- (Research). His research focus is flooding and salinity tolerance in crops and forages. Collaborations with University have enhanced his research and enabled a wider UWA-NU relationship in research and student training in Agricultural Science and related disciplines. Other experiences include: Associate Dean Teaching & Learning (2005-07), Head of School (2013-15), President of the Australian Society of Plant Scientists (2013-14), Coordinator Master of Agricultural Science (2012-18), editor with Annals of Botany (2001-present) and Journal of Experimental Botany (2011-present). He has two national teaching awards.

Professor Hideyuki Hirakawa Center for the Study of Co* Design, Osaka University Acting Head, Program for Education and Research on Science and Technology in Public Sphere (STiPS). Hideyuki is Professor of the Center for the Study of Co*Design at Osaka University. He holds a PhD in Science and Technology Studies from the International Christian University. Areas of interest include issues of science and democracy, and the governance of science and technology, especially in the risk governance in food safety policy and public engagement in science and technology. He works frequently with policymakers: around the socio-political impacts of radioactive contamination caused by the Fukushima nuclear disaster, and within the RE-designing Science, Technology and Innovation Policy (SciREX) program of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT). Professor Matt James Matthew R. James was born in Sydney, Australia, in 1960. He received the B.Sc. degree in mathematics and the B.E. (Hon. I) in electrical engineering from the University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia, in 1981 and 1983, respectively. He received the Ph.D. degree in applied mathematics from the University of Maryland, College Park, USA, in 1988. In 1988/1989 Dr James was Visiting Assistant Professor with the Division of Applied Mathematics, Brown University, Providence, USA, and from 1989 to 1991 he was Assistant Professor with the Department of Mathematics, University of Kentucky, Lexington, USA. In 1991 he joined the Australian National University, Australia, where he served as Head of the Department of Engineering during 2001 and 2002. He has held visiting positions with the , San Diego, Imperial College, London, and University of Cambridge. His research interests include quantum, nonlinear, and stochastic control systems. Dr James is a co-recipient (with Drs L. Bouten and R. Van Handel) of the SIAM Journal on Control and Optimization Best Paper Prize for 2007. He is currently serving as Associate Editor for EPJ Quantum Technology and Applied Mathematics and Optimization, and has previously served IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control, SIAM Journal on Control and Optimization, Automatica, and Mathematics of Control, Signals, and Systems. He is a Fellow of the IEEE, and has held an Australian Research Council Professorial Fellowship. He is currently serving as Deputy Director, Research School of Engineering at the Australian National University.

David Lawson David is the Senior Trade Commissioner and Consul-General in Osaka where he leads the team engaging with Japanese customers and investors in the Kansai, Shikoku and Chugoku region of Western Japan. David joined Austrade in 1997 as Trade Commissioner and Consul in Sendai, Japan and has had subsequent positions as Austrade’s Trade Commissioner (South Australia), Consul-General and Trade Commissioner in and in 2011 he was responsible for establishing the Australian Consulate-General in Mongolia which was run by Austrade. He served as the inaugural Australian Consul-General and Trade Commissioner in Mongolia in 2012. David has also acted as Austrade’s State Director NSW & ACT and served as Trade Commissioner in the Australian Embassy in Tokyo with responsibility for the Services, Technology and Advanced Manufacturing sectors. Prior to joining Austrade David spent nine years as an independent trade consultant in both Australia and Japan specialising in housing and construction and worked closely with Japanese mining interests in Australia and Papua New Guinea. Prior to setting up his business, he worked for two years at the Australia-Japan Research Centre, Australian National University (ANU). A graduate of Economics and Asian Studies at ANU, David also holds a Master’s degree in Commercialisation of Science and Technology from the University of Adelaide and is a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

Professor Joan Leach Professor Joan Leach (BA Hons, BSc, MA, PhD) is Director of the Australian National Centre for Public Awareness of Science at The Australian National University. She is President of Australian Science Communicators and Chair of the National Committee for History and Philosophy of Science at the Australian Academy of Science. Her research centres on public engagement with science, medicine and technology and she has been active in the Australian government’s recent initiatives toward ‘Inspiring Australia’. She is currently researching the role of popular science in the globalization of science since the 1960s, a project funded by the Australian Research Council. She has published extensively about science communication, including Rhetorical Questions of Health and Medicine, and was editor of the International journal, Social Epistemology. Professor Hisakazu Matsushige Director, Center for the Study of Co* Design, Osaka University. Hisakazu Matsushige, PhD, is Director of Center for the Study of Co* Design, Osaka University, Osaka, Japan. He has been teaching economic theory, econometrics and economic comparative studies. He has written several articles, mainly on skill formation, internal labour markets and wage determination in Japan and also in Australia.

Professor Barbara Norman Professor Barbara Norman is the Chair of Urban and Regional Planning and Director of Canberra Urban and Regional Futures (CURF) at the University of Canberra. Professor Norman is Chair of the ACT Climate Change Council, an Honorary Professor at the University of Warwick (UK), a Visiting Fellow at the Australian National University and past national president of the Planning Institute of Australia. She also has a substantial professional background having worked at all levels of government and run her own practice.

Associate Professor Sujatha Raman Sujatha Raman is Reader/Associate Professor and Director of Research at the Australian National Centre for Public Awareness of Science (CPAS), The Australian National University (ANU), Canberra. She is the CPAS and ANU lead in the Virtual Institute for Responsible Innovation (VIRI). She was previously co-director of research at the Institute for Science and Society (ISS), University of Nottingham, UK. Raman works on transdisciplinary approaches to the question of how we respond to global challenges in light of diverse forms of knowledge, practice, and valuation. With collaborations in the global North and South, her research spans science policy, the uses of scientific knowledge, responsible research and innovation, and public engagement around energy transitions, environmental change and sustainability, and health and antimicrobial resistance (AMR).

Professor Masakazu Sugiyama Professor Masakazu Sugiyama is a recognised leader in the sustainable conversion of solar energy to next-generation fuels through use of leading edge photovoltaics and compound semiconductors. More recently, Professor Sugiyama has demonstrated the highest level of in-field solar conversion efficiency using electrolysis to produce hydrogen from water. CONTACT US
