MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR GENERAL The Asian Development Bank (ADB)–Japan Scholarship Program (JSP) was established in April 1988 with financing from the Government of Japan. The program has so far provided more than 3,000 students from ADB’s developing member countries with an opportunity to pursue postgraduate studies in economics, business and management, science and technology, and other development-related fields at participating academic institutions in Asia and the Pacific. The 2014/2015 academic year marks the 21st anniversary of Mongolian citizens’ acceptance into the program. In the last 20 years, the ADB–JSP has helped 125 Mongolian citizens to advance their education in various academic institutions in Asia and the Pacific. Today, the ADB–JSP scholars are working in both the government and the private sector across Mongolia—in education, business, banking and finance, and other sectors—and are making positive contributions to the country’s development. We are proud of our scholars and we continue to stay in touch with them as they progress in their chosen careers. This ADB–JSP publication for Mongolia contains general information about the program, as well as success stories of some Mongolian ADB–JSP scholars and alumni. We believe that their stories will encourage many more Mongolian citizens to become ADB–JSP scholars and realize their dreams for Mongolia’s development. Highland Ave., Los Angeles, CA 90038 | T: 323 450 9409 | www.nonaka-hill.com Keita Matsunaga Biography Born in Tajimi, Japan (an area well known for ceramics), in 1986, Keita Matsuaga currently lives and works in both Tajimi and Kani in Gifu prefecture. The son of ceramists, his artistic training includes studying architecture at Meijo University, (2010), completing the Tajimi City Ceramics Design Laboratory (2013), and graduation from the Kanazawa Utsatsuyama Crafts Workshop (2016). Matsunaga has shown extensively across Japan in both a gallery setting and in biennales, and has won several awards including the Takaoka Contemporary Craft Competition (2013). Matsunaga’s ceramic sculptures are a contemporary take on organic forms, inspired by shapes and textures found in nature. Even at a young age, his comprehension of glaze is apparent, seen in the fearless color schemes found on each work. Changing method with each body of work, his evolving artistic practice is indicative of his education – an impressive dedication to keep learning. CAMPUS Asia Program Overview FY2017 budget: 650 million yen CAMPUS Asia is a program that promotes quality-assured student exchanges through cooperation among the governments, quality assurance organizations, and universities of Japan, China, and Korea. From FY2011, ten pilot programs were selected through joint screening by the three countries and conducted. Since FY2016, in addition to eight programs that applied from among the ten pilot programs, nine new programs by the university consortium participating in CAMPUS Asia have been added for a total of 17 programs that have begun the full-fledged implementation of their activities. Record/plan of exchanges (no. of Japanese students sent abroad, foreign students received in Japan) - FY 2011-2015 (actual): Sent: 1,392, received: 1,485 - FY 2016-2020 (planned): Sent: 2,199; received: 2,076 Details At the 2nd Japan-China-Korea Summit in October 2009, Japan proposed, and agreement was reached on, trilateral high-quality inter- university exchanges. In April 2010, the trilateral 1st Experts Meeting was held in Tokyo (Japan side chairman: Yuichiro Anzai, President, Japan Society for the Promotion of Science). Agreement was reached on “CAMPUS Asia”* as the name for the program. *Stands for: “Collective Action for Mobility Program of University Students in Asia” In April 2015, at the 5th China-Japan-Korea Committee for Promoting Exchange and Cooperation among Universities, the three countries agreed that, with the end of the pilot program period, from FY2016, they would: 1) increase the number of trilateral inter- university collaboration programs, including the exchanges carried out as pilot programs, 2) make efforts to expand the collaborative framework of the Program (in the mid- and long-term) to the ASEAN countries. -

140 Tajimi ko-uta (Gifu Prefecture, Japan) Tajimi is a city located in southern Gifu prefecture, close to the border of Aichi prefecture. It became a city in 1940 and the region has been known for Mino- yaki ceramics since the railway was opened in 1900. This city can be divided into four districts according to the type of ceramic product it produces. The song is about the birthplace of Mino-yaki ceramics. “Tajimi Kouta” is performed by the public each August on the anniversary of the city’s founding or at Bon festivals. Pronunciation: tah-jee-mee koh-tah Music: 4/4 meter Japanese Music CD, Track 1 Formation: Individual dancers facing ctr, hands at sides. Steps & Styling: Bose hando: Arms bent at elbow, forearms horizontal with palms down at chest height, R arm above L. Cho: a short, soft clap of the hands; Chon: a hard, long clap of the hands. Fujiyama: Arms form a mountain (Mt. Fujiyama), palms down, fingers touching in front of the face. Fusenagashi: Swing both arms down and to the R. Can be done with same arm movements to the L side. Soenobashi: R arm straight in front, palm down; L arm bent with hand on R elbow. Can be done with opp. hand position. Ryote age kazashi: Raise arms above head with palms up to form a circle (moon).
