To me, he sounds “right “ in the original keys, which wouldn’t take him above an A flat. 74.5 rpm side one, 77.7 side two. Expressing such thoughts, however, is the surest way to create deadly enmity among collector friends, so I’ll qualify this strictly as a personal thought. Feel free to listen to your De Lucia records at whatever speeds please your ears or whatever you feel is right! 2-3. $60.00. ZÉLIE DE LUSSAN [ms] 3709. 10” Red Monarch 2188. MIGNON: Connais-tu le pays? (Thomas). Very rare pre- matrix first issue, issued May, 1903, and renumbered in October in the 81000 series. Clean label. CARMEN: Habanera (Bizet)/MIGNON: Connais-tu le pays? (Thomas). Piano acc. 1903 recordings. Just about 1-2. $20.00. VERA DE LUZE [DE LUTSE] [s]. 1879- ? . Born in Russia, de Luce studied in Warsaw where she made her operatic debut in 1900. She was likewise successful in Italy (usually as Vera De Luza) in both lyric and coloratura parts and was well-received in Russia at the Zimin Opera, where she created for Moscow Puccini’s Madama Butterfly. It appears that the remainder of her life was spent in Russia. In 1934 she was on the faculty of a conservatory in Moscow. 4015. 10” Green Russian Zonophone X-63053/X-63054 [2704r/2705r]. MAGIC FLUTE: Der Hölle Rache (Mozart)/AIR AND VARIATIONS (Proch). Piano acc. Unlike some other singers of her time, she doesn’t transpose the Magic Flute aria down. Both sides are sung in Italian. Few tiny scrs. and rubs but little greying. 3-4. $100.00. 81 VOCAL 78 rpm DISCS MARIA DE MACCHI [s]. Near Turin, 1870-Milano, 1909. While she made her debut as a mezzo in 1889, singing Laura in La Gioconda, de Macchi soon moved to dramatic soprano roles. Through the 1890s she appeared throughout Europe as well as in Moscow. In the 1901-03 period she sang at La Scala, the Teatro dal Verme and the Rome Costanzi, achieving great success in these important houses. A contract with the Metropolian Opera for 1905-05 proved to be unfortunate. Although she had been recommended by Caruso as well as her brother, Celestino de Macchi (who had a voice studio in the Metropolitan Opera House), Maria was not well received by the few New York journalists who attended her performances. Touring with the company later in the season, however, she received high critical praise, an inference having been that a jealous diva or two might have put out the word to New York critic friends. At any rate, de Macchi became ill before leaving America. While she continued her career in Europe, including a 1908 Norma in Rome, she apparently never regained her full health and died early in 1909 after an unsuccessful operation to remove a tumor. She left only a few recordings for Fonitipia/Odeon. 8241. 11” Brown Odeon 59129/59130 [XPh478/484]. NORMA: Casta Diva/NORMA: Ah! bello a me ritorna (Bellini). Piano acc. Few MGTs, 2. $75.00. STANISLAWA DE MICHALSKA [s]. A “mystery” singer, probably from Poland but likely heard on stage in Italy. G&T wouldn’t have recorded her unless she had been an active performer or unless she was just beginning a career and great things were expected of her. 3237. 10” Blk. Milano G&T 53353 [103-R]. MANON LESCAUT: In quelle trine morbide (Puccini). Very attractive singing despite the exceptionally clunky piano work of Mo. Cottone. Internal pressure crk. across grooves, visible but not broken through to the blank side. Should not sound (didn’t when checked here). Otherwise 2-3. $10.00. BERNARDO DE MURO RHEINGOLD: Abendlich strahlt (Wag- ner). Just about 1-2. $15.00. ALESSIO DE PAOLIS [t]. Rome, 1893-Queens, NY, 1964. He began singing as a church chorister at the age of seven and later studied at the St. Caecilia Academy. His studies were interrupted by the First World War, when he served in the Italian Army aboard a dirigible. Making his debut as the Duke in Rigoletto in Bologna, 1919, De Paolis appeared throughout Italy in principal lyric roles. He was first heard at La Scala as Fenton in Falstaff in 1921. In the 1930s he began to specialize in character parts. From 1938 until his death he was a leading comprimario tenor at the Metropolitan, singing fifty roles in over a thousand performances. He was on the way to a Metropolitan performance when he lost control of the car he was driving on the Long Island Expressway and was killed. 1112. 12” Red acous. Polydor 73001 [938az/940az]. DON GIOVANNI: Il mio Tesoro (Mozart)/BOHÊME: Che gelida manina (Puccini). Side one just about 1-2. De Pasquali studied in New York with Oscar Saenger and in Italy, where she met and married tenor Salvatore Mangione De Pasquali. He retired from singing and served as a manager for his wife, dying in 1923 “at an advanced age”. Bernice appeared in Italy and made her Met debut in 1909 as Violetta in La Traviata.

VOCAL 78 rpm Discs Minimum bid as indicated per item. Listings “Just about 1-2” should be considered as mint and “Cons. 2” with just the slightest marks. For collectors searching top copies, you’ve come to the right place! The further we get from the time of production (in many cases now 100 years or more), the more difficult it is to find such excellent extant pressings. Some are actually from mint dealer stocks and others the result of having improved copies via dozens of collections purchased over the past fifty years. * * * For those looking for the best sound via modern reproduction, those items marked “late” are usually of high quality shellac, pressed in the 1950-55 period. A number of items in this particular catalogue are excellent pressings from that era. * * * Please keep in mind that the minimum bids are in U.S. Dollars, a benefit to most collectors. * * * “Text label on verso.” For a brief period (1912-14), Victor pressed silver-on-black labels on the reverse sides of some of their single-faced recordings, usually with a translation of the text or similarly related comments. BESSIE ABOTT [s]. Riverdale, NY, 1878-New York, 1919. Following the death of her father which left her family penniless, Bessie and her sister Jessie (born Pickens) formed a vaudeville sister vocal act, accompanying themselves on banjo and guitar. Upon the recommendation of Jean de Reszke, who heard them by chance, Bessie began operatic training with Frida Ashforth. She subsequently studied with de Reszke him- self and appeared with him at the Paris Opéra, making her debut as Gounod’s Juliette.

THE MARKETPLACE HOW WELL DID EDISON RECORDS SELL? During the latter part of 1919 Thomas A. Edison, Inc. began to keep cumulative sales figures for those records that were still available. The documents were continued into 1920 and then stopped. While the documents included sales figures for all series of discs time allowed me to copy only those figures for the higher priced classical series. Thus the present article includes the 82,000 ($2.00); 82,500 ($2.50); 83,000 ($3.00) and 84,000 ($4.00) series. Should there be sufficient interest it may be possible to do the other series at a later date. While the document did list some of the special Tone-Test records pressing figures were included for only two of them. I have arbitrarily excluded them and propose to discuss the Edison Tone Tests at a later date. The documents also originally included supplementary listings, which, for the sake of convenience, have been merged into the regular listings. The type copy of the major portion of the listings has been taken from regular Edison numerical catalogs and forms the framework of my forthcoming Complete Edison Disc Numerical Catalog. Several things may be noted: 1) Many of the sales figures seem surprisingly small and many of the records must be classed as rarities; 2) Deletion was not always because of poor sales-mold damage also played a part; 3) Records were retained even with extremely disappointing sales. Without a knowledge of the reason for discontinuance we cannot assume anything concerning records that had already been discontinued.

VOCAL 78 rpm Discs FRANZ (FRANTISEK) PÁCAL [t]. Leitomischi, Austria, 1865-Nepomuk, Czechoslo- vakia, 1938. First an orchestral violinist, Pácal then studied voice with Gustav Walter in Vienna and sang as a chorister in Cologne, Bremen and Graz. In 1895 he became a member of the Vienna Hofoper and had a great success there in 1897 singing the small role of the Fisherman in Rossini’s William Tell. He then was promoted to leading roles and remained in Vienna through 1905. Unfor- tunately he and the Opera’s director, Gustav Mahler, didn’t get along, despite Pacal having instructed his son to kiss Mahler’s hand in public (behavior Mahler considered obsequious). Pacal stated that Mahler ruined his career, calling him “talentless” and “humiliating me in front of all the Opera personnel.” We don’t know what happened to invoke Mahler’s wrath but we do know that Pácal sent Mahler a letter in 1906, unsuccessfully begging for another chance. Leaving Vienna, Pácal then sang with the Prague National Opera, in Riga and finally in Posen. His rare records demonstate a fine voice with considerable ring in the upper register. -Internet sources 1858. 10” Blk. Wien G&T 43832 [891x-Do-2z]. FRÜHLINGSZEIT (Becker). In 1895 he appeared at La Scala in the premieres of Mascagni’s Guglielmo Ratcliff and Silvano. Other engagements at La Scala followed, as well as at the Rome Costanzi, 1903 (with Caruso in Aida) and other prominent Italian houses.

  • Toscanini IV – La Scala and the Metropolitan Opera
Toscanini IV – La Scala and the Metropolitan Opera Trying to find a balance between what the verbal descriptions of Toscanini’s conducting during the period of roughly 1895-1915 say of him and what he actually did can be like trying to capture lightning in a bottle. Since he made no recordings before December 1920, and instrumental recordings at that, we cannot say with any real certainty what his conducting style was like during those years. We do know, from the complaints of Tito Ricordi, some of which reached Giuseppe Verdi’s ears, that Italian audiences hated much of what Toscanini was doing: conducting operas at the written tempos, not allowing most unwritten high notes (but not all, at least not then), refusing to encore well-loved arias and ensembles, and insisting in silence as long as the music was being played and sung. In short, he instituted the kind of audience decorum we come to expect today, although of course even now (particularly in Italy and America, not so much in England) we still have audiences interrupting the flow of an opera to inject their bravos and bravas when they should just let well enough alone. Ricordi complained to Verdi that Toscanini was ruining his operas, which led Verdi to ask Arrigo Boïto, whom he trusted, for an assessment. Boïto, as a friend and champion of the conductor, told Verdi that he was simply conducting the operas pretty much as he wrote them and not allowing excess high notes, repeats or breaks in the action. Verdi was pleased to hear this; it is well known that he detested slowly-paced performances of his operas and, worse yet, the interpolated high notes he did not write.

One New York press notice indicates that her rendering of the “Suicidio” from La Gioconda on a Manhattan Sunday night concert “kept her busy bowing in recognition to applause for three or four minutes”. At La Scala she was cast with Battistini in Simon Boccanegra and created for that house in 1911 the Marschallin in their first Rosenkavalier. Her career continued into the mid-1920s when she retired to Buenos Aires and taught. 4113. Edison BA 28159. LA TRAVIATA: Addio del passato (Verdi). ReproB/T.

Romantic Ornamentation Portamento in Romantic Opera Deborah Kauffman Present day singing differs from that of the nineteenth century in a num- ber of ways. One of the most apparent is in the use of portamento, the "carrying" of the tone from one note to another. In our own century portamento has been viewed with suspicion; as one author wrote in 1938, it is "capable of much expression when judiciously employed, but when it becomes a habit it is deplorable, because then it leads to scooping."1 The attitude of more recent authors is difficult to ascertain, since porta- mento has all but disappeared as a topic for discussion in more recent texts on singing. Authors seem to prefer providing detailed technical and physiological descriptions of vocal production than offering discussions of style. But even a cursory listening of recordings from the turn of the century reveals an entirely different attitude toward portamento.
