Enrico Caruso (1873-1921)
ENRICO CARUSO (1873-1921) Birth Name: Enrico Caruso Place of Birth: Naples, Italy Career Highlights: Enrico Caruso was widely considered the greatest international opera star of his day. He was not American – Caruso was born and died in Naples, Italy – but he spent many years living in New York as a leading star at the Metropolitan Opera, and was the United States’ first recording superstar, issuing almost 300 recordings with the Victor Talking Machine Company (later RCA). While much of his recording focused on operatic works, Caruso recorded many popular songs, including the Neapolitan (southern Italian) song “O Sole Mio,” in the language of his native Naples. (In 1960, Elvis Presley had a No. 1 hit with the song “It’s Now or Never,” sung to same tune as “O Sole Mio.”) In 1918, Caruso recorded the patriotic American World War I song “Over There.” Recording: “O Sole Mio” (traditional Italian song), 1916 Recording: “Over There” (patriotic World War I song), 1918 Questions to consider: What cities are the newspapers below from? What does the size and placement of the articles about Caruso’s death suggest about his popularity in the United States? What are some of the terms used to describe Caruso in the headlines to these articles? Why might American audiences have been interested in listening to recordings of popular Italian songs? What does Caruso’s recording of a song like “Over There” suggest about his attitude toward the United States? About Americans’ attitudes toward him? Why might it have been easier for an Italian to find success as an opera star in the United States during this period than in another field? How might Caruso’s success have helped paved the way for singers of Italian descent who came after him?. -

Luciano Pavarotti Is Dead at 71
September 6, 2007 Luciano Pavarotti Is Dead at 71 By BERNARD HOLLAND Luciano Pavarotti, the Italian singer whose ringing, pristine sound set a standard for operatic tenors of the postwar era, died Thursday at his home near Modena, in northern Italy. He was 71. His death was announced by his manager, Terri Robson. The cause was pancreatic cancer. In July 2006 he underwent surgery for the cancer in New York, and he had made no public appearances since then. He was hospitalized again this summer and released on Aug. 25. Like Enrico Caruso and Jenny Lind before him, Mr. Pavarotti extended his presence far beyond the limits of Italian opera. He became a titan of pop culture. Millions saw him on television and found in his expansive personality, childlike charm and generous figure a link to an art form with which many had only a glancing familiarity. Early in his career and into the 1970s he devoted himself with single- mindedness to his serious opera and recital career, quickly establishing his rich sound as the great male operatic voice of his generation — the “King of the High Cs,” as his popular nickname had it. By the 1980s he expanded his franchise exponentially with the Three Tenors projects, in which he shared the stage with Plácido Domingo and José Carreras, first in concerts associated with the World Cup and later in world tours. Most critics agreed that it was Mr. Pavarotti’s charisma that made the collaboration such a success. The Three Tenors phenomenon only broadened his already huge audience and sold millions of recordings and videos. -
ARSC Journal
THE MARKETPLACE HOW WELL DID EDISON RECORDS SELL? During the latter part of 1919 Thomas A. Edison, Inc. began to keep cumulative sales figures for those records that were still available. The documents were continued into 1920 and then stopped. While the documents included sales figures for all series of discs time allowed me to copy only those figures for the higher priced classical series. Thus the present article includes the 82,000 ($2.00); 82,500 ($2.50); 83,000 ($3.00) and 84,000 ($4.00) series. Should there be sufficient interest it may be possible to do the other series at a later date. While the document did list some of the special Tone-Test records pressing figures were included for only two of them. I have arbitrarily excluded them and propose to discuss the Edison Tone Tests at a later date. The documents also originally included supplementary listings, which, for the sake of convenience, have been merged into the regular listings. The type copy of the major portion of the listings has been taken from regular Edison numerical catalogs and forms the framework of my forthcoming Complete Edison Disc Numerical Catalog. Several things may be noted: 1) Many of the sales figures seem surprisingly small and many of the records must be classed as rarities; 2) Deletion was not always because of poor sales-mold damage also played a part; 3) Records were retained even with extremely disappointing sales. Without a knowledge of the reason for discontinuance we cannot assume anything concerning records that had already been discontinued. -
