Since the book was published in , The Taqwacores has gone on to inspire a real life Muslim punk scene, resulting in the formation of bands such as The Kominas. Raised by Syrian-Muslim immigrants in Cleveland, Ohio, I struggled dealing with where I was living, and how I was being conditioned to think and act. My surroundings never felt like home. My home never felt like home. Being a Muslim in America just never felt right. I remember randomly coming across a quick logline on The Taqwacores ' wikipedia page which described it as a novel "depicting a fictitious Islamic punk rock scene. I immediately called up a Los Angeles independent bookstore, asking if they had the book on their shelf. They did. I got it. I read it in a few sittings, and I was done for. If there was ever a book that I felt was written just for me, Michael Muhammad Knight's The Taqwacores was it: private thoughts and feelings that troubled me for years were being discussed openly and honestly. Although raw and aggressive at times, the characters of the novel battled these issues with unconditional sincerity. Gender equality, homosexuality, and freedom of expression were just a few of the many topics explored in the novel; to hear these points debated in an Islamic setting was downright groundbreaking. Eventually, the musicians write a truly compelling song lyric, "Mohammad was a punk rocker. There is even one girl in the house, who wears full-body burkas, but she often expresses extremely open- minded, liberal ideas, although she is most comfortable in her highly conservative garb. Instead of plot, we see these short vignettes—each one a picture of diversity within the Islamic worldview.     HOSMAN, SARAH SILTANEN, M.A. Muslim Punk Rock in the United States: A Social History of the Taqwacores. (2009) Directed by Dr. Rebecca G. Adams. 124 pp. This project develops a social history of a Muslim American punk rock subculture, The Taqwacores. This social history examines the social context in the United States that has facilitated the emergence of Taqwacore, specifically the cultural, political, and social influences in the lives of Taqwacore members. This social history also examines how individuals explain and understand their involvement with Taqwacore and their combination of these two seemingly paradoxical identities. Methods include an analysis of publications about The Taqwacores to understand how the media conceptualize Taqwacore and interviews with musicians and fans in order to understand Taqwacore on an individual level, explore the personal experiences of specific Muslim Americans with Taqwacore, and determine specific motivating factors for involvement in Taqwacore. Drawing on subcultural theory, theories of punk rock, and recent studies of Islamic identity in United States, Taqwacore is conceptualized as an expression of a dual frustration toward the United States and Islam for the individuals involved. Taqwacore also serves as a form of resistance to this dual frustration, a community for those involved, a re-appropriation of punk rock within the United States, and a source of both individual and collective identity construction. Burroughs vs. the Quran, and Tripping with Allah. It differs from earlier critical writing on Knight by taking a Bakhtinian approach to his ground-breaking first novel The Taqwacores and its attempt to open a dialogue on reforming American Islam, focusing on Knight’s relationship to the Beats and their often overlooked Islamic discourses as his ideal model for this artistic/social reform, and tracing a shift in his work from reformist, documentary fiction to self-focused, “cool” autobiography. It argues that what enables Knight to initiate a punk reading of Islam, to cut-up the Quran, and to prescribe ayahuasca (a psychoactive vine native to Amazonian Peru) to pilgrims going to Mecca is his interpretation of the famous statement attributed to Hassan Sabbah: “Nothing is true; everything is permitted.” Meanwhile, Knight’s approach differs from that of many writers from Rabelais and Dostoyevsky to Nietzsche and Burroughs who have cited or paraphrased this statement. Knight gained attention with his 2004 novel, The Taqwacores, in which he detailed the lives of Islamic punk rockers, the eponymous taqwacores, as they navigated issues pertaining to religion, punk rock, youth, and life in Western modernity. Much of Knight’s other writing is concerned with his own life, religion, and religious struggles, all of which are likewise represented in his fiction as well. Implicit throughout the totality of Knight’s body of work is his desire to change the Islamic tradition so that it is able to better benefit individual practitioners.

The explosion of MySpace and Face- book pages for diasporic Muslim bands is a case in point. It is tempting to stop at this moment, basking in this concrete new media presence. However, presence does not always beget position. And in this case, young Muslim males continue to be othered, exoticized, otherwise marginalized online and offline. The online presence of ‘Taqwacores’, a transnational diasporic punk music scene, serves as a space where these marginal essentialisms are con- tested. In the face of post-9/11 and 7/7 Islamophobia, Taqwacores’ cyber- spaces have been viewed as ‘safe’ outlets for progressive activist Muslims to discuss and organize. Though the Internet’s role in growing Muslim musical youth subcultures is important, it is critical not to let this overshadow the role of these virtual spaces as cocoons where young Muslim males (especially marginalized ones) can creatively and freely express themselves. This chapter explores the continuing circulation of pejorative essentialisms of diasporic Muslim males (especially as ‘terrorist’/demonic ‘other’) and underlines the possibility of cyberspaces to function as meaningful and progressive Muslim social worlds which challenge these essentialisms both online and offline (a case in point for the anti-Islamophobic leanings of the Taqwacores).

This paper examines some of the complexities of , identity formation and belonging as experienced by Muslim youth in the current political climate in Canada. However intense and· antagonizing this social and political climate may be, I argue that there is room for dissenting and subversive reconfigurations of a Muslim identity that resists the eviction of Muslims from full belonging and citizenship in Western society. This paper explores this possibility by focusing on Muslim~ youth identity formation in the context of Taqwacore, a Muslim punk scene popular among some second-generation youth.
