From John Kastner, four-time Emmy winner and director of Life with Murder, comes Not Criminally Responsible, a new documentary about the revolution in the treatment of the “criminally insane.” Kastner and his crew are given remarkable access to a forensic psy- chiatric institution, filming inside its walls for over a year. The film shows how psychiatrists treat criminals with severe mental disorders—patients who not long ago would have been considered so hopelessly dangerous they must be confined for life, but today are being released back into the community.

Ron Turcotte is deemed one of the best jockeys of all time. From 1961 to 1978, he won 3,033 horse races. But he’s better known for taking the U.S. Triple Crown astride Secretariat, the fastest thoroughbred the racing world has ever known. At the time, the prestigious trophy hadn’t been won in 25 years. Turcotte is also the only jockey in history to have won five of the six consecutive Triple Crown races. His brilliant career came to an abrupt halt during a race that left him a paraplegic.

In recreating the structure of the symphonic poem—crescendo, climax, decrescendo—Bouchard’s animation evokes humanity’s surge forward and the quest for power, in which men, women and children are inexorably drawn to their doom. During the early 1930s, young poet Félix Leclerc befriended a Jamaican chemical engineer named Frank Randolph Macpherson, a university graduate and inveterate jazz fan who worked for a pulp and paper company. He inspired Leclerc, who wrote a song about log drives and named it after his friend—“MacPherson.” Created through paint-on-glass anima- tion, this poetic hybrid of fiction and documentary explores the friendship between a white man and a black man to the sounds of jazz, traditional French music, Jamaican mento and a Schubert sonata.

Au Québec, vers 1933, le poète Félix Leclerc se lie d’amitié avec l’ingénieur-chimiste jamaïcain Frank Randolph Macpherson. Amateur de jazz et employé d’une compagnie papetière, Macpherson inspire Leclerc, qui écrit une chanson portant sur la drave, qu’il intitule « MacPherson ». Entre fiction et documentaire, à travers des séquences porteuses d’Histoire et autour de la mise en images de la célèbre chanson, ce film d’animation évoque avec délicatesse les sentiments qui auraient lié l’ingénieur jamaïcain et à l’une des sœurs du poète. How- ever, his affection for badminton, birdwatching and liquor leaves him little time for wrangling cattle. It soon becomes clear that nothing in his refined upbringing has prepared him for the harsh conditions of the New World. This animated short is about the beauty of the prairie, the pang of being homesick and the folly of living dangerously out of context.

En 1909, un jeune homme pimpant, entretenu par ses parents, quitte l’Angleterre pour élever du bétail en Alberta. Son penchant pour le badminton, l’ornithologie et l’alcool lui laisse cependant peu de temps pour se mesurer aux troupeaux, et il devient vite évident que son éducation raffinée ne l’a pas préparé aux rudes conditions du Nouveau Monde. Ce court métrage d’animation relate la beauté sauvage des Prairies canadiennes, les affres du mal du pays et la folie d’un changement de vie dangereusement radical.
