DIMITRIS KITIS The Anti-Authoritarian Chóros A Space for Youth Socialization and Radicalization in Greece (1974–2010) he Balkan historian Mark Mazower, highlighting that there is a conundrum posed by anarchist groups in Greece, observed: “We Thave, to my knowledge, no serious study of this subject, nor of the ways labels, such as ␣␣´ι (anarchists) and ␣␣´ (anti- authoritarians) have been deployed sometimes by people in their own name and others by their opponents.”1 The purpose of this article is to address this question and give a preliminary genealogy of the anarchist phenomenon in Greece since 1974. The history of Greece since World War II includes a civil war (1946–49), which unofficially started before the liberation of the country from the Axis powers, and a military dictatorship (1967–74). These watershed events occurred in the backdrop of a vicious rift between rightists and leftists that permeated the whole of Greek society for the rest of the Cold War. The article sets out to examine the origins (and the makings) of a particular type of disaffection that developed among youth during the period of the Metapolitefsi. The Metapolitefsi, which is the time frame for this article, was the historical period after the fall of the military dictatorship in Greece (1974) that was marked by liberalization or democratization and greater integration into Europe. It is important to note that the fall of the dictatorship was precipitated by the Polytechnic Journal for the Study of Radicalism, Vol. 9, No. 1, 2015, pp. 1–36. Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of the University of Texas at Austin in Partial Fulfillment for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy The University of Texas at Austin May 2005 To Harold Ashenfelter and Amul Desai Preface A crowded, red double-decker bus pulls into the depot and comes to a rest amidst swirling dust and smoke. Its passengers slowly alight and begin to disperse into the muggy evening air. I step down from the bus and look left and right, trying to get my bearings. This is only my second day in Bombay and my first to venture out of the old city center and into the Northern suburbs. I approach a small circle of bus drivers and ticket takers, all clad in loose-fitting brown shirts and pants. They point me in the direction of my destination, the JVPD grounds, and I join the ranks of people marching west along a dusty, narrowing road. Before long, we are met by a colorful procession of drummers and dancers honoring the goddess Durga through thundering music and vigorous dance. The procession is met with little more than a few indifferent glances by tired workers walking home after a long day and grueling commute. -

HOSMAN, SARAH SILTANEN, M.A. Muslim Punk Rock in the United States: A Social History of the Taqwacores. (2009) Directed by Dr. Rebecca G. Adams. 124 pp. This project develops a social history of a Muslim American punk rock subculture, The Taqwacores. This social history examines the social context in the United States that has facilitated the emergence of Taqwacore, specifically the cultural, political, and social influences in the lives of Taqwacore members. This social history also examines how individuals explain and understand their involvement with Taqwacore and their combination of these two seemingly paradoxical identities. Methods include an analysis of publications about The Taqwacores to understand how the media conceptualize Taqwacore and interviews with musicians and fans in order to understand Taqwacore on an individual level, explore the personal experiences of specific Muslim Americans with Taqwacore, and determine specific motivating factors for involvement in Taqwacore. Drawing on subcultural theory, theories of punk rock, and recent studies of Islamic identity in United States, Taqwacore is conceptualized as an expression of a dual frustration toward the United States and Islam for the individuals involved. Taqwacore also serves as a form of resistance to this dual frustration, a community for those involved, a re-appropriation of punk rock within the United States, and a source of both individual and collective identity construction.
