Fenêtre sur l’immense marché de l’Amérique latine, ateliers sur la distribution indépendante et sur les nouveaux déploiements via ses réseaux sociaux. Aussi stratégies de promotion des films, enjeux du transmédia, maillage entre professionnels de la musique et du cinéma, microrencontres de réseautage avec les professionnels étrangers figurent au programme du Rendez-vous Pro. Nouveauté cette année, le SODEC_Lab, un atelier sur l’accès au marché inter- national pour des longs métrages de fiction, organisé par la SODEC, se tient en parallèle au Rendez-vous Pro. Le Rendez-vous Pro, c’est également une vitrine sur le cinéma québécois offerte aux professionnels étrangers, distributeurs, acheteurs et programmateurs qui, pendant trois jours, viennent à la rencontre de notre cinéma. Venus d’Europe et d’Amérique latine, ils sont une quarantaine à assister à des visionnements de films inédits et à venir à la rencontre des professionnels d’ici. Aux professionnels québécois, nous vous souhaitons un Rendez-vous Pro nourrissant et inspirant, où vous ferez le plein de nouvelles idées et de nouvelles rencontres ! Et aux professionnels européens et latino-américains, nous vous souhaitons un excellent séjour au cœur du cinéma (et de l’hiver) québécois, plein de découvertes et de rencontres fructueuses ! This third edition of the Rendez-vous Pro will be the biggest yet, with the aim of offering Québec’s film professionals the most stimulating platform possible for meeting, discussion and learning. The program includes a window on the PLEINS FEUX immense Latin American market, workshops on independent distribution and new social media approaches, film promotion strategies, the implications of transmedia, networking between film and music-industry professionals, and short networking meetings with foreign professionals. New this year is the SODEC_Lab, a workshop, parallel SUR LE TALENT to the Rendez-vous Pro, organized by SODEC and focused on bringing fictional features to international markets. The Rendez-vous Pro is also a showcase for our latest films for international professionals, distributors, buyers D’ICI. and programmers, who will spend three days immersed in Québec’s cinema: around 40 professionals from Europe and Latin America will attend screenings of unreleased films and meet local professionals. We wish Québec’s film professionals an enlightening and inspiring Rendez-vous Pro; may you leave with plenty of new ideas and contacts.     HOSMAN, SARAH SILTANEN, M.A. Muslim Punk Rock in the United States: A Social History of the Taqwacores. (2009) Directed by Dr. Rebecca G. Adams. 124 pp. This project develops a social history of a Muslim American punk rock subculture, The Taqwacores. This social history examines the social context in the United States that has facilitated the emergence of Taqwacore, specifically the cultural, political, and social influences in the lives of Taqwacore members. This social history also examines how individuals explain and understand their involvement with Taqwacore and their combination of these two seemingly paradoxical identities. Methods include an analysis of publications about The Taqwacores to understand how the media conceptualize Taqwacore and interviews with musicians and fans in order to understand Taqwacore on an individual level, explore the personal experiences of specific Muslim Americans with Taqwacore, and determine specific motivating factors for involvement in Taqwacore. Drawing on subcultural theory, theories of punk rock, and recent studies of Islamic identity in United States, Taqwacore is conceptualized as an expression of a dual frustration toward the United States and Islam for the individuals involved. Taqwacore also serves as a form of resistance to this dual frustration, a community for those involved, a re-appropriation of punk rock within the United States, and a source of both individual and collective identity construction. Burroughs vs. the Quran, and Tripping with Allah. It differs from earlier critical writing on Knight by taking a Bakhtinian approach to his ground-breaking first novel The Taqwacores and its attempt to open a dialogue on reforming American Islam, focusing on Knight’s relationship to the Beats and their often overlooked Islamic discourses as his ideal model for this artistic/social reform, and tracing a shift in his work from reformist, documentary fiction to self-focused, “cool” autobiography. It argues that what enables Knight to initiate a punk reading of Islam, to cut-up the Quran, and to prescribe ayahuasca (a psychoactive vine native to Amazonian Peru) to pilgrims going to Mecca is his interpretation of the famous statement attributed to Hassan Sabbah: “Nothing is true; everything is permitted.” Meanwhile, Knight’s approach differs from that of many writers from Rabelais and Dostoyevsky to Nietzsche and Burroughs who have cited or paraphrased this statement. While these writers describe how devastating it would be to live in a godless world where everything is permitted with no hereafter, Knight stresses a vague “coolness” in Sabbah’s statement which he uses to guide his own style of living.
