Introduction Everyday Coexistence in the Post-Ottoman Space REBECCA BRYANT In 1974 they started tormenting us, for instance we’d pick our apples and they’d come and take them right out of our hands. Because we had property we held on as long as we could, we didn’t want to leave, but fi nally we were afraid of being killed and had to fl ee. … We weren’t able to live there, all night we would stand by the windows waiting to see if they were going to kill us. … When we went to visit [in 2003, after the check- points dividing the island opened], they met us with drums as though nothing had happened. In any case the older elderly people were good, we used to get along with them. We would eat and drink together. —Turkish Cypriot, aged 89, twice displaced from a mixed village in Limassol district, Cyprus In a sophisticated portrayal of the confl ict in Cyprus in the 1960s, Turkish Cypriot director Derviş Zaim’s feature fi lm Shadows and Faces (Zaim 2010) shows the degeneration of relations in one mixed village into intercommunal violence.

Because of this close relation between the two concepts; translation studies have recently put emphasis on the study of translation and culture. The aim of this study is to descriptively analyse translation of material culture elements in Buket Uzuner’s novel Uzun Beyaz Bulut-Gelibolu translated into English as The Long White Cloud-Gallipoli by Pelin Thornhill Arıner within the framework of domestication and foreignization strategies. The study focuses on determining how translation procedures by Peter Newmark that are used in translation of cultural elements affect the governing translation strategy, namely domestication and foreignization in translation of the selected novel.The procedures are divided into two strategies as domesticating and foreignizing strategies. Naturalization, Cultural equivalent, Functional Equivalent, Descriptive Equivalent, Synonymy, Modulation, Translation Label, Compensation, Componential Analysis, Reduction and Expansion and Paraphrase are analysed under domestication strategy while Literal Translation, Transference, Through Translation and Paraphrase, Notes, Additions are analysed under foreignization strategy. The results indicate that out of 75 material culture elements, domestication was used 39 times while foreignization was used 36 times and there is no prevailing translation strategy in the translation Keywords: translation, culture, Newmark, procedures, domestication, foreignization 1.

Ms FLAUTRE welcomed the participants of the meeting and made a short introduction on the latest developments in the EU-Turkey relations, drawing particular attention to widespread concerns in the European Parliament (EP) about the directions the Turkish Government was taking and its attitude towards the European norms in the democratisation process. Following this short introduction Ms FLAUTRE gave the floor to Mr Afif DEMIRKIRAN, Co-Chair of the EU-Turkey Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) who made his opening remarks and expressed his optimism that relations between the two parliaments will be no less constructive and could be even strengthened in the next legislature. 1. Adoption of the draft agenda. It was agreed to start with the first working session and to discuss the draft agenda after the presentations on the EU-Turkey relations. 2. EU-Turkey relations and the state of play of the accession negotiations Mr Stefan FÜLE, European Commissioner for Enlargement started his intervention by emphasising that the timing was perfect for an exchange of views on this subject. The Commissioner noted a renewed momentum in the EU-Turkey relations (opening of Chapter 22, signing of the readmission agreement and developments in the dialogue on visa liberalisation, enhanced energy cooperation, trade relations and the strategic dialogue and cooperation in foreign policy), which lasted until the end of 2013.

The Turkish President will have to choose between a pragmatic and an Islamist foreign policy. If the Turkish economy returns to high growth rates, Erdogan's domestic position will be strengthened and he might still return to his pet Islamist adventures overseas. ERDOGAN’S ISLAMIST FOREIGN POLICY AT THE CROSSROADS In his quest to become the leader of the Muslim world, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has in the recent past vehemently opposed the European Union (EU) governments as well as West Asian and North African countries for their policy positions on Islamic issues. Erdogan, for instance, went on an offensive against French President Emmanuel Macron for the latter’s perceived Islamophobic stance in the aftermath of beheading of Samuel Paty on October 16, 2020 in Paris. On October 24, 2020, Erdogan spoke against German authorities for raiding the Mevlana mosque in Berlin, closely associated with the Turkish Milli Gorus movement. Turkey’s relations with key Muslim countries like Saudi Arabia and Egypt have also been fraught, given Erdogan’s support for the Muslim Brotherhood. Since December 2020, however, Erdogan has been trying to reach out to the European Union and the West, in a possible effort to transform his pan-Islamist foreign policy outlook to a pro-Western Kemalist worldview.

Theme: Space, Place and Dwelling Space, Place and Dwelling is the theme of the Spring School that will be held in Tirana, Albania, for March 2018. Spatiality is an underrated but very fundamental aspect of both religious practice and religious reasoning. According to Tweed (2006), religious practice comes down to basically two forces: crossing and dwelling. Terrestrial crossing refers to physical movement, such as pilgrimage, certain spatial rituals, as well as spiritual travel indicating a movement across time and place. Corporeal crossing refers not only to the religious understanding of life cycles and modes of temporality, yet additionally the embodied limits and constraints in life as well as the concomitant registers of meaning provided by religion to confront them. Cosmic crossing refers to transcendental dynamics of boundaries, and to the religious language which provides meaning to crossing. One could also think of movement that is not religiously inspired, yet may well impact, notions of religion, such as migration and displacement due to religious reasons.

    WFP Turkey Country Office WFP/Deniz Akkuş Emergency Social Safety Net Quarter 4 2017 Monitoring Report Highlights 395,060 applications were registered in the MoFSP database as of 29 December 2017. In December, the ESSN assisted 199,336 eligible households, corresponding to 1,175,254 individual beneficiaries. By the end of 2017, over €250 million had been injected into the Turkish economy through ESSN assistance transferred to beneficiaries. 91% of ESSN beneficiaries are Syrians, followed by 6.5% Iraqis and 2.2% Afghans. The remaining come from other countries such as Somalia and Iran. In Q4, WFP and TRC field teams completed 44 Focus Group Discussions (FGD) across 17 provinces, with participation of over 400 eligible and ineligible refugees. In Q4, WFP field teams conducted visits to 320 SASF offices, 143 Halkbank branches and 16 TRC Service centers in 63 provinces of Turkey. By December, the ESSN Facebook page reached 67,000 followers and the 168 call center had received over 450,000 calls.     Saint Sophia HERALD Volume 13 Number 9 Many Lives...One Heart September, 2008 “What’s That Around Your Neck?” I was privileged to have spent almost two weeks in Greece this summer where I had the pleasant task of baptizing the granddaughter of a very dear friend. Greece is the premier laboratory of western history and civilization. Whatever period of time or era one wishes to examine, it is all there. For Christians who study the New Testament scriptures, there is no better place to walk in the footsteps of St. Paul than Greece. On Sunday, August 3rd, I took the commuter train from Kifissia, a northern suburb of Athens, to go to Monastiraki, the closest station to the ancient Athenian agora or market place just under the shadow of the Acropolis. I wanted to walk through the ancient city ruins and end up on Mars Hill, known in the book of Acts, Chapter 17 as the Areopagus. It is a small rocky hill where St. Paul stood and addressed the Athenian philosophers and skeptics, preaching to them the gospel message of Jesus Christ. I wanted to stand where Paul stood nearly 2000 years before and to vicariously sense through my spiritual imagination, a little of what he saw and experienced. The train was packed…standing room only. A few feet away from me stood a young man who was intently looking at me. At ev- ery station stop he inched his way closer to me. Half way into the 30 minute ride to downtown Athens, we were almost face to face.
