Out of 36 states and UT’s in India, the family Sphaeroceridae is so far known only from 15 states and UT’s and maximum number of species reported from the state of West Bengal (26.98%). Among different biogeographic zones in India, the Indo-Gangetic Plains share maximum number of species (49.20%) whereas, Islands biogeographic zone has no record of these flies. The present communication is the first attempt in documenting the diversity, distribution and gaps in research of the family Sphaeroceridae from India.

  • Insects of Ojibway Prairie, a Southern Ontario Tallgras Prairie
199 Chapter 9 Insects of Ojibway Prairie, a Southern Ontario Tallgrass Prairie Steve M. Paiero and Stephen A. Marshall Department of Environmental Biology, University of Guelph Guelph, Ontario, Canada Paul D. Pratt Windsor Department of Parks Windsor, Ontario, Canada Matthias Buck Department of Environmental Biology, University of Guelph Guelph, Ontario, Canada Abstract. This chapter describes the insect fauna of Ojibway Prairie, a tallgrass prairie complex in southern Ontario, highlighting the tallgrass-dependent and tallgrass-associated species among the over 2,000 insect species found there so far. The presence of tallgrass-dependent and tallgrass-associated species reflects Ojibway Prairie’s status as a fragment of a formerly more continuous grassland and thus supports the prairie peninsula hypothesis. The chapter includes a discussion of insect species associated with other southern Ontario tallgrass prairie sites and compares these species with those found in Ojibway Prairie. Also discussed are rare species found at Ojibway Prairie but not associated specifically with tallgrass habitats. Forty-four insect species new to Canada or new to Ontario (1 Orthoptera, 3 Hemiptera, 10 Coleoptera, 16 Diptera, and 14 Hymenoptera) are recorded from Ojibway Prairie.

  • First Evidence of Specialized Feeding on Ectomycorrhizal
Bluhm et al. BMC Ecol (2019) 19:10 https://doi.org/10.1186/s12898-019-0227-y BMC Ecology RESEARCH ARTICLE Open Access Protura are unique: frst evidence of specialized feeding on ectomycorrhizal fungi in soil invertebrates Sarah L. Bluhm1*, Anton M. Potapov1,2, Julia Shrubovych3,4,5, Silke Ammerschubert6, Andrea Polle6 and Stefan Scheu1,7 Abstract Background: Ectomycorrhizal fungi (ECM) play a central role in nutrient cycling in boreal and temperate forests, but their role in the soil food web remains little understood. One of the groups assumed to live as specialised mycorrhizal feeders are Protura, but experimental and feld evidence is lacking. We used a combination of three methods to test if Protura are specialized mycorrhizal feeders and compared their trophic niche with other soil invertebrates. Using pulse labelling of young beech and ash seedlings we analysed the incorporation of 13C and 15N into Acerentomon gallicum. In addition, individuals of Protura from temperate forests were collected for the analysis of neutral lipid fatty acids and natural variations in stable isotope ratios. Results: Pulse labelling showed rapid incorporation of root-derived 13C, but no incorporation of root-derived 15N into A. gallicum. The transfer of 13C from lateral roots to ectomycorrhizal root tips was high, while it was low for 15N. Neutral lipid fatty acid (NLFA) analysis showed high amounts of bacterial marker (16:1ω7) and plant marker (16:0 and 18:1ω9) fatty acids but not of the fungal membrane lipid 18:2ω6,9 in A. gallicum. Natural variations in stable isotope ratios in Protura from a number of temperate forests were distinct from those of the great majority of other soil invertebrates, but remarkably similar to those of sporocarps of ECM fungi.

Several morphological traits are plesiomorphic, such as the short prothorax, characters of the wing venation and possibly also the lack of discoidal spines on the fore femora. On the other hand, Metallyticus has autapomor- phies which are unique among extant Mantodea, such as the iridescent bluish-green body coloration and the enlargement of the first posteroventral spine of the fore femora. The present publication reviews our knowledge of Metallyticus thus providing a basis for further research. Data on 115 Metallyticus specimens are gathered and interpreted. The Latin original descriptions of the five Metallyticus species known to date, as well as additional descriptions and a key to species level that were originally published by Giglio-Tos (1927) in French, are translated into English.

Department The University of British Columbia Vancouver, Canada DE-6 (2/88) Abstract Increasing forest management resulting from bark beetle attack in British Columbia's forests has created a need to assess the impact of single species management on local insect biodiversity. In the Fort St James Forest District, in central British Columbia, Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii Franco) (Fd) grows at the northern limit of its North American range. At the district level the species is rare (representing 1% of timber stands), and in the early 1990's growing populations of the Douglas-fir beetle (Dendroctonus pseudotsuage Hopkins) threatened the loss of all mature Douglas-fir habitat in the district.
