Let’s Get Started: Here are the definitions for these words. Measure:

This is how you find the size or weight of something. When you measure something you are taking a measurement.

Question: How do we measure things? Answer: Units of measurement - Units of Measurement provide standards for our comparisons, so that the numbers from our refer to the same thing.

Standards are special objects that are used to make measurements in terms of fixed units of measurement.

There are different Systems of Units of Measurement: British **US customary units-US customary units are the official units used in the US. We will also hear this system called the “English system”. Question: What can be measured?

Answer: There are lots of things that can be measured. Here are some of the things we measure the most often: Height (how tall) Length (how long) Temperature (how hot or cold) Weight (how heavy)

Height - Height is the distance from top to bottom.

Length - Length is the distance of how far from end to end or from one to another. Question: What US customary units are used to measure height and length? Answer: There are many units but the ones we will learn about in this lesson are: Inch/ Foot/ feet Yard/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P9sYvDCnI0g Units: Inch/ Inches: A measure of length (or distance) in US units. There are 12 inches in a foot, and 36 inches in a yard. This is about the size of your thumb knuckle to fingertip or the size of a cap on a bottle of pop.

Foot/ feet: A (or distance) in US units equal to 12 inches. This is about the length of a folder you use for school work.

Yard/ yards: A unit of length (or distance) in US units equal to 3 feet or 36 inches. This is about how long a baseball bat is. Question: What will I use to measure the length or height? Answer: You can use the following tools to measure length and height.

Ruler - used for smaller items less than one foot Yardstick- used for longer or bigger items Plastic - used for curvy items Metal tape measure - used for very long objects

Sometimes you will need more than one to tell the length or height. Example: The fence was 5 feet 6 inches tall.

And sometimes you could use more than one type of measuring tool. Example: I could use a yardstick or a metal measuring tape to measure the height of my refrigerator. Practice time: Choose the tool and Unit tool unit of measurement you would use for the following objects:
