What are Gabions ?

Gabions are wire mesh boxes, containers or baskets filled with rock to prevent soil erosion and to retain/contain soil particles. They reduce water velocities and re-capture river bed sediment in streams. Flat Gabions, called River or Reno Mattresses are widely used in river courses where soil erosion is a problem over a wide flat area and a large area needs to be protected against soil loss/scour. They are used mostly in the civil engineering industry especially in the construction of roads, however recently due to their environmental benefits are being used in many various applications and industries.

They were even recently used to contain chickens for transportion in the back of a vehicle to the reseller with suprising success !!

How to Erect Gabions ?

River willow woven Gabions were first used by soldiers in previous centuries for fortification of their barracks and cylindrical Gabions(with rocks) were rolled down the slope at the approaching enemy during war times. The modern square/rectangular Gabion is now used predominently in the Civil Engineering and Mining Industries for retaining walls and for river structures to reduce water flows and prevent soil erosion. Gabions Retaining or EcoSleeves are cylindrical biodegradable sleeves manufactured from Werson, bound together with twine and reinforced with galvanised or PVC coated wire mesh. Reinforced EcoSleeves are used to reduce sheet erosion and create a microclimate for vegetation establishment. All mild steel wire is heavily zinc coated. When used in more severe environments, a 0,5 mm nominal thick PVC coating is extruded over the galvanised wire to provide added protection. Reinforced EcoSleeves are manufactured in hexagonal woven wire Mesh Type 80. For some lighter applications, EcoSleeves may be supplied without the mesh reinforcement.

Gabion mesh case can be filled with stones, especially the round stone or the fresh stone which was produced from the quarry. If you need the material with special gravity, Gabion mesh certainly can be your first choice. For persistency of the structure, these stones must be able to resist the climatic change, it is cannot burning and dissolution, and also must be quite hard. Gabion Baskets

Our baskets are made from Class A galvanized mild tensile steel wire in accordance with the SANS 675 specification. The baskets and mattresses are manufactured in strict accordance with the SANS 1580 and site installations are also in accordance with the latest SANS 1200 specification.

Our Gabion mesh is hexagonal in shape meeting with the 80×100 mm mesh aperture for gabions with a mesh wire diameter of 2.7mm and selvedge wire of 3.4mm diameter. Contact us also for welded mesh gabion material as well.In order to strengthen the baskets, all the edges of structure selvedged with wire of greater diameter. Usually Gabion Baskets which have bigger length than 2m is divided into cells by panels (called diaphgram) positioned per 1meter. The wire mesh used in Gabion Baskets strictly conforms to EN10223-3 and All wires used in (54,000-70,000psi) acc.to BS1052/80 and ASTM A641-97. (The figures above are of the wire prior to manufacturing mesh). The elongation at break is min.12% and test to be carried out on a sample of minimum 30cm (12 in.) long, before manufacturing the mesh. (In acc.with ASTM A370-92) Galvanisation strictly conforms to BS443/82, EN10244-2 and exceed those of ASTM A641-97 ClassIII Soft Temper Coating, DIN1548 and QQ-W-461 H. And Zinc adherence has to be such that when thewire is wrapped around a cylindrical mandrel having 4 times the diameter of the wire, zinc shall not flake or crack to such an extent that any flake or crack can be removed by simply rubbing with bare fingers.

Lowmaintenance is required for theconstruction works (Life Time Economy) 5. Strength: It can absorb the hugeamount of energy and very strongunder tension generated by the nature.Well-made gabion structures can existin perfect condition for many decades. River Mattresses have a hexagonal mesh spec. of 80×100mm with 2.5mm mesh wire and 3.0mm selvage wire diameter. All gabions and mattresses use a 2.20mm wire diameter lacing wire which is supplied with the baskets and used to lace together the mesh panels during the installation process.

Mattresses and gabion baskets are also available with a 0.5mm nominal thickness P.V.C. coating to enhance the resistance of the baskets to corrosion of the wire mesh. This provides an overall increase in diameter of 1mm to all wires used in the manufacturing process.

Gabion Mattress

Gabion mattresses are made of hexagonal double- twisted mild steel wire mesh like gabion baskets. Mattresses can be supplied in various length, widths and height. The tolerances of mattress' dimensions are ~3% in length, ~3% in width and ~2.5cm in height.

In order to strengthen the mattresses, all the edges of the mattress are selvedged with a wire of greater diameter.

Gabion mattress has a hexagonal mesh with the opening of 80x100mm with 2.5mm mesh wire and 3.0mm selvedge wire diameter.

All gabions and mattresses are supplied with the baskets and are used to lace together the mesh panels during the erection process. Mattresses and gabion baskets are also available with a 0.5mm thickness PVC coating to enhance the resistance of the baskets to corrosion. The river mattress is a structure made of hexagonal double twisted wire mesh. River mattresses are filled with stones at the project site to form flexible and permeable, monolithic structures such as river bank protection and channel linings for erosion control.

Reno Mattresses

Reno mattresses are used for river bank and scour protection, channel linings for erosion control, and embankment stability. They are filled with rock at the project site to form flexible, permeable and monolithic structures to promote rapid growth of natural vegetation. All the physical and mechanical properties of Haifeng Reno mattresses meet or exceed the requirements of ASTM A975-97.

The base section of the Reno mattress is divided into compartments and filled with stones at the project site. With lids secured, Reno mattresses form flexible, permeable and monolithic structures.

Flexibility

The woven mesh system has the capability of withstanding unexpected and/or localized stresses due to ground settlements and scour by deflection while maintaining its structural integrity.

Permeability

The stone fill allows the water to seep through the structure while retaining the soil, therefore no additional drainage is required to relieve the hydrostatic pressures.

Coating Reno mattresses are available with different levels of coating protection for durability in a wide range of environments and climatic conditions. Reno mattresses are manufactured from coated wire offering about three time greater protection than zinc coated wire mattresses. Where Reno mattresses come in contact with more aggressive environments, an additional polymer protective coating is applied over the Haifeng coating to maximise the level of protection.

Reno mattresses are environmentally friendly products. The blending of Reno mattress structures into the environment is rapid and pleasing. The voids in the rockfill become progressively filled with silt, promoting vegetation growth which is essential to the preservation and maintenance of the ecological balance of the surrounding environment. Reno mattress construction does not require skilled labor because they are very easy to build. Standard construction equipment can be used. Structures can be built in stages, if necessary, and baskets can be prefilled and launched to enable the installation under water. Site assistance is available from any Haifeng area office.

Advantages and Distinctions of Reno mattresses:

This is a mattress shaped version of the gabion used mainly for erosion control when the retaining properties of box gabions are not required. Their strength lies in their double twisted hexagonal mesh of steel wire which is reinforced by selvedges of heavier wire running along the edges. The base section is divided into compartments to restrict the movement of stone and strengthen the structure. The lid is supplied as a separate panel. The wire will not unravel even when cut. Assembly is easy, requiring no specialized labor and nearby rock is used for fill. Free drainage and 30-35% voids allow vegetation to grow. Welded Gabion

Welded gabions are made of welded wire fabrics. This kind of wire mesh containers are uniformly welded and can be supplied of various sizes. Welded gabion can be connected with other similar containers and filled with stones to form flexible and permeable structures for retaining the riverbanks and soil. The steel wire for making of welded mesh gabion is cold drawing high tensile steel zinc coated.

Advantage:Gabion is made of welded wire fabrics offer strong strength compared with woven wire gabion while they have similar flexibility. Specification Weld mesh gabion are manufactured from cold drawn steel wire and strictly conform to BS1052:1986 for tensile strength. It is then electrically welded together and Hot Dip Galvanised or Alu-Zinc coated to BS443/EN10244-2, ensuring a longer life. The meshes can then be organic polymer coated to safeguard against corrosion and other weathering effects, especially when the gabions are to be used in salty and highly polluted environments. Our Alu-Zinc* mesh is coated using the Galfan process. Lacing wire shall be provided separately for site assembly. Lacing Spirals (see photos below), Alu-Zinc and stainless steel C rings are also available at extra cost if required. Welded mesh gabions are also available in Cylindrical and Sac form with diameters of 0.65m, 0.95m and in lengths of 2.0m and 3.0m.
