This thesis outlines the combination of methods that has allowed me to continue to play while tackling broader questions surrounding permission and place that arise when musicians, dancers, or artists work with materials from other cultures. Through an examination of the geographical, historical, and social contexts of the Isan region I have organized my research around the central themes of place, power, permission, and performance. 339 Chapter Six Three Royal Wats Through the Turmoil
CHAPTER SIX THREE ROYAL WATS THROUGH THE TURMOIL OF NATIONALIST GOVERNMENTS AND DICTATOR REGIMES (1910-1957) Introduction In the previous chapter, we saw how the royal wats lost their sources of direct state support, resulting in their dependence on rent revenues derived from their donated land and their abbots became responsible for their physical condition. Real estate properties of wats became the key for their survival, and the royal government also supported them to be independent entities in the market economy. In this chapter, we will see the increasing gap between the government and the Buddhist monastic order. This was especially the case after King Vajiravudh appointed his uncle and preceptor, Prince Wachirayan as the Supreme Patriarch, whose control of monastic affairs included urging wats to manage and invest in their land properties. Moreover, he also developed strategies to increase the Buddhist religious central assets, with the aim of making the Buddhist monastic order more independent from the state. He also created primary schools and Buddhist standard texts and promoted monastic practices which supported the unity of the nation in keeping with King Vajiravudh’s ultra-nationalist ideology. In this reign, the wats and monks were separated from the management of public education. Moreover, the king did not support any new construction or preservation of the royal wats as previous rulers had in the past. Therefore, royal wats lost their prominent role in society and state affairs, but at the same time they gained significant financial stability in terms of their private investment. After the bloodless revolution in 1932, King Prachathipok (Rama VII) became a constitutional monarch and the People’s Party comprised of lower ranking officials took control of the kingdom. -

Its location between the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Rim has caused this region to be well-known around the world. With an abundance of natural resources and agricultural produce, it has frequently drawn people passing through the area to trade, and to try their luck by settling here. This has historically made it a region comprised of a broad mix of races and languages; a truly pluralistic society. These settlers have complemented each other well. Several have split to form large or small groups within the region, making it an area of great cultural diversity. It is a situation which has had a notable impact on other independent cultures with which it has come into contact, whether they be Indian, Chinese, Muslim or Western. The region has always been rich in many forms of cultural heritage, including lifestyle, arts and traditions. The introduction of foreign cultures and art has brought about an incremental development of the area as a whole. In other words, the influence of foreign cultures, for example Indian or Islamic, could be described as having fertilized the indigenous cultures of S. -

THE INFLUENCE OF SOCIAL CONDITION TOWARDS THE STRING ENSEMBLE DEVELOPMENT IN RATTANAKOSIN ERA PANSAK VANDEE Department fo Music Suan Sunandha Rajabhat University 1 U-Thong nok Road, Dusit, Bangkok 10300 Thailand Abstract- The research aims to study the influence of social condition towards the string ensemble development during Rattanakosin period; and to study the role of string ensemble in Thai society. The study is counted as a historical research applying a set of methods, namely, documentation research, field study, and in-depth interview with 10 historians and Thai classical music experts.The research results are as follows : According to the research on the Thai string ensemble, the first ensemble was created at the earlyAyutthayaperiod and was popularly performed among artists until the early Rattanakosin era.During the Western colonialism, the Thai society was changed in terms of policy by King Rama IV.A lot ofdevelopmentplans were launched to be compatible withthe western.In particular, the Royal court and noble circle adjusted themselves by adopting some western cultures. The Thai string ensemble was developed and formed as a recreational activity to please the elite group. The later king, King Chulalongkorn,had expanded his father’s idea of modernization by sending his sons and cousins to study in Europe. In the meantime, the Thai musicians and singers also had chances to perform, exchange and share their experience with the western artists. Upon their return to Thailand, the western style of performance was introduced to the royal court and some instruments were added to the conventional band, such as violin and organ. These were continuously adapted to the royal court of King Rama VI, King Vajiravudh, who graduated from Oxford University, as the Thai string ensemble with piano. -

The Effects of Globalization on the Status of Music in Thai Society Primrose Maryprasith Thesis submitted for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the University of London Institute of Education 1999 Abstract Globalization tends to be accompanied by two contrary processes: the one a celebration of newly opened international communications, the other, resistance to what is seen as an invasion of foreign culture. This research examines such processes in terms of perceptions of the status of music in Bangkok. The focus is on three main musical categories each of which, if vocal, uses Thai language in its lyrics: Thai classical, Thai country popular and Thai popular music. These musical categories, and the changing relationships between them, are examined in terms of three interconnected areas of perceptions of musical value: the position of music in education, the status of musical careers and the role of music in affirming national identity. Two sets of questionnaires were completed by 100 undergraduate students from 5 universities and 108 secondary-level school music teachers from 108 schools; and interviews were held with 10 respondents from 9 record companies. Whilst the students valued Thai classical music and country popular music as national symbols, they identified themselves with Thai popular music, which has become the main local musical product as a result of the globalization of the music industry. Contrastingly, the teachers understood Thai popular music as a capitulation to foreign culture. They used Thai classical music as the most common extra-curricular activity, but they nonetheless incorporated Thai popular music most often in classrooms. Careers involving Thai classical music were perceived as offering fewer rewards compared to other types of music. -

Following Mon immigration into Thailand, the art form was adopted and adapted by Thais as a medium for entertainment and worship. In the current climate of globalization and the influence of western trends, representation of Piphat Mon has been reduced to funeral ceremonies in a small collection of Thai provinces. This research examines the historical background and current conditions of Piphat Mon in Nakhon Ratchasima Province, its primary location in Northeast Thailand, with the aim of creating a set of performing arts standards. The results of this research show that Piphat Mon has changed in light of social and cultural changes to Thailand since 1998. Nowadays there are a number of problems with artistic performances of Piphat Mon in Korat, particularly concerning the attitudes of the performers, the sound, the equipment and the location. -

Andaya Keywords: Northern Thailand, Participatory Music, Lanna, Karen, Lahu, Akha i ABSTRACT The 20th century consolidation of Bangkok’s central rule over the northern Lanna kingdom and its outliers significantly impacted and retrospectively continues to shape regional identities, influencing not just khon mueang northerners but also ethnic highlanders including the Karen, Akha, Lahu, and others. Scholars highlight the importance and emergence of northern Thai “Lanna” identity and its fashioning via performance, specifically in relation to a modernizing and encroaching central Thai state, yet northern-focused studies tend to grant highland groups only cursory mention. Grounded in ethnographic field research on participatory musical application and Mihalyi Csikszentmihalyi’s notion of “flow”, this dissertation examines four case studies of musical engagements in the north as it specifically relates to ethnic, political, and autoethnographic positioning, narratives, and group formulation. In examining the inclusive and exclusive participatory nature of musical expression within various ethnic and local performances in the north, I show how identity construction and social synchrony, achieved via “flow,” sit at the heart of debates over authenticity, continuity, and ethnic destiny. This especially happens within and is complicated by the process of participatory musical traditions, where Thongchai Winichakul’s “we-self” is felt, synchronized, distinguished, and imagined as extending beyond the local performance in shared musical space across borders and through time—even as the “other” is present and necessary for the distinguishing act of ethnic formalization. -
