To investigate the impact of recalled behaviors (content) and the ease with which these behaviors came to mind (process) on assessment of one's own assertiveness, 158 West German students were asked to .describe either six (easy recall) or twelve (difficult recall) examples of their own assertive or non-assertive behaviors. To manipulate the distinctiveness of the recall, subjects were told the task would or would not be difficult. On the basis of the availability heuristic it was assumed that subjects in the difficult recall conditions would assess themselves as being less assertive (or non-assertive) than subjects in the easy recall condition, despite the larger number of recalled behaviors. Results clearly supported this prediction, suggesting that the ease with which examples could be brought to mind was used as an informational basis for evaluating personal attributes. Results also supported Bem's (1982) self-perception theory by demonstrating that individuals infer their personality characteristics from the content of behavioral information they recall, as well as the ease with which those behaviors come to mind. "? q: _P-7- "F. 5'7 7igrra.errlir.4-777.x1.7 Ease of recall 2 Recalled Behavior and Ease of Recall as Information in Self-Assessment Tversky and Kahneman's work on the availability heuristic has had a long and profound influence on research in social psychology (cf. Nisbett & Ross, 1980). Although the concept of availability has instigated an enormous number of studies, its meaning has deviated from the original definition of this judgmental heuristic. While Tversky & Kahneman (1973) focused on the process of recall or reconstruction (the "ease with which x can be brought to mind"), social psychologists have mainly concentrated on contents whose impact on judgments was facilitated by availability. Recent criticism (Taylor, 1982) has high- lighted the danger of triviality potentially associated with the latter definition because "one's judgments are always based on what comes to mind" (p. 199, emphasis ours). In addition to varying what can easily be remembered, the present study concentrates on how difficult it is to recall x. Specifically, we investigated the impact of re- called behaviors (content) and the ease with which these behaviors come to mind (process) on assessments of a per- sonality characteristic, namely one's own assertiveness. To vary the content of subjects' recall, part of the sub- jects had to report assertive behaviors while others had to report non-assertive behaviors they had engaged in. To manipulate the perceived ease of recall half of the sub- jects in each condition were asked to report six examples (which was found to be easy in a pretest) while the others were asked to provide twelve examples (which was found to be difficult). If subjects' judgments are primarily based on the content they recall, subjects should attribute them- selves higher assertiveness when they recalled assertive rather than non-assertive behaviors and this difference should be more pronounced when inany rather than few examples were recalled. On the other hand,if subjects use the ease of recall as additional information subjects who recalled only six behaviors but found that task easy should attribute themselves more extreme traits than subjects.who recalled twelve examples but found that task difficult - despite 4 the fact that the latter recalledmore behaviors. A final experimental variationwas the "distinctive- ness" of the recallprocess. That is, the informational value of the ease of recall should begreater when it is perceived to be of high rather thanlow distinctiveness. The experience that it is difficultto generate twelve examples should be less diagnostic for one'sown attribute when every- body is assumed to share thisexperience than when this experience is unique to oneself. These possibilities were exploredin the present study using a 2 (assertive vs. non-assertive)x 2 ("easy" vs. "difficult") x 2 (highvs. low distinctiveness)-factorial design. Method 158 students of a West German teachers'college were asked to participate in the constructionof an Assertive- ness Inventory. To do so, subjects were askedto provide either six (easy recall) or twelve (difficultrecall) examples of their own assertiveor non-assertive behaviors. To manipulate the distinctivenessof recall, half of the subjects in each conditionwere informed that the task should not provide any difficulties andthat pretest subjects found it easy to provide the requestednumber of examples, while the remaining subjectswere informed that the task might be difficult and that pretest subjects foundit hard to complete the examples. Finally, subjects were told thata future goal of our research project would be the development ofan asser- Liveness training and were askedto answer five questions related to this intention. On nine-point bipolar scales these questions assessed whetherthe subjects considered themselves assertive, whether they wantedto be more assertive, whether they feltan assertiveness training might be useful to them, etc. Thesummary score of five questions (Cronbacb's alpha= .72) was used as the main dependant variable.In addition, subjects rated the diffi- cult of providing the requested examples (9= very diffi- cult). 5 . 7rWrri'W-Finr..17742141Trff5NSTRPT*;1171"7-7` Results Table 1 shows subjects' self-reported assertiveness as a function of the experimental variables; higher scores in- dicate higher assertiveness. As predicted, subjects who had to recall six examples (easy recall conditions) reported higher assertiveness when they described assertive (M . 25.8) rather than non-assertive behaviors (11 at 23.7). On the other hand, subjects who had to recall twelve examples (diffi- cult recall conditions) reported higher assertiveness when they recalled non-assertive (M = 26.5) rather than assertive behaviors (M = 23.5), as depicted in Figure 1. This cross- over pattern is confirmed by a significant interaction of content of recall and ease of recall, F(1,142) = 6.35, 24 .02. Moreover, no main effect for content emerged (FC 1), contrary to the classic predictions of self-perception theory (Bem, 1972). These results demonstrate that subjects used the ease of retrieval as information in making self-attributions, resulting for example in attributions of lower assertive- ness when

Introduction Decades of psychological research documented that human judgment often falls short of normative ideals. Social and cognitive psychologists discovered an ever increasing number of systematic biases and illustrated their pervasive role in judgment and decision making (for reviews see Gilovich, GriYn, & Kahneman, 2002; Kahneman, Slovic, & Tversky, 1982; Kerr, MacCoun, & Kramer, 1996; Nisbett & Ross, 1980; Pohl, 2005). Similarly, researchers in applied fields, like health and consumer behavior, identified numerous erro- neous beliefs that impair good decisions and prevent people from doing what would be in their best interest (Christensen, Moran, & Wiebe, 1999; Webley, Burgoyne, Lea, & Young, 2001). In both cases, the remedy seems obvious: If people only thought enough about the issues at hand, considered all the relevant information and employed proper reasoning strategies, their deci- sion making would surely improve. This assumption is at the heart of numerous strategies that attempt to debias human judgment (for a review see Larrick, 2004); it is likewise central to public information campaigns designed to dispel erroneous beliefs and to replace them with more accurate information (for a review see Rice & Atkin, 2001). Rolf Reber Department of Psychosocial Science University of Bergen, Norway Norbert Schwarz Department of Psychology and Institute for Social Research University of Michigan Piotr Winkielman Department of Psychology University of California, San Diego We propose that aesthetic pleasure is a function of the perceiver’s processing dynam- ics: The more fluently perceivers can process an object, the more positive their aes- thetic response. We review variables known to influence aesthetic judgments, such as figural goodness, figure–ground contrast, stimulus repetition, symmetry, and pro- totypicality, and trace their effects to changes in processing fluency. Other variables that influence processing fluency, like visual or semantic priming, similarly increase judgments of aesthetic pleasure. Our proposal provides an integrative framework for the study of aesthetic pleasure and sheds light on the interplay between early prefer- ences versus cultural influences on taste, preferences for both prototypical and ab- stracted forms, and the relation between beauty and truth. In contrast to theories that trace aesthetic pleasure to objective stimulus features per se, we propose that beauty is grounded in the processing experiences of the perceiver, which are in part a func- tion of stimulus properties. Robust findings in impression formation demonstrate that perceivers’ judgments show a weighted averaging pat- tern, which results in less favorable evaluations when mildly favorable information is added to highly favorable information. Across seven studies, we show that pre- senters do not anticipate this averaging pattern on the part of evaluators and instead design presentations that include all of the favorable information available. This additive strategy (“more is better”) hurts presenters in their perceivers’ eyes be- cause mildly favorable information dilutes the impact of highly favorable information.

Lee http://online.sagepub.com University of Michigan, Ann Arbor Psychologists’ work on conversational pragmatics and judgment suggests a refreshing approach to charitable interpretation and theorizing. This charita- ble approach—what I call Gricean charity—recognizes the role of conversa- tional assumptions and norms in subject-experimenter communication. In this paper, I outline the methodological lessons Gricean charity gleans from psy- chologists’ work in conversational pragmatics. In particular, Gricean charity imposes specific evidential standards requiring that researchers collect empirical information about (1) the conditions of successful and unsuccess- ful communication for specific experimental contexts, and (2) the conver- sational norms governing communication in experimental contexts. More generally, the Gricean turn in psychological research shifts focus from attri- butional to reflexive, situational explanations. Gricean charity does not pri- marily seek to rationalize subject responses. Rather, it imposes evidential requirements on psychological studies for the purpose of gaining a more accurate picture of the surprising and muddled ways in which we weigh evidence and draw. Simultaneously Presented Options Lead to Normatively Better Choices Than Sequentially Presented Options Krishna Savani, National University of Singapore, Singapore Shankha Basu, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore Four experiments investigate the effect of choosing among simultaneously (versus sequentially) presented options. Findings suggest that people are more likely to choose the normatively best option when they view the options simultaneously. Mediation analysis reveals that greater deliberation, when considering options simultaneously, may be a possible mechanism for the phenomenon.     Insult, Aggression, and the Southern Culture of Honor: An "Experimental Ethnography" Dov Cohen Richard E. Nisbett University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign University of Michigan ( An n Arbor) Brian E Bowdle Norbert Schwarz Northwestern University University of Michigan (Ann Arbor) Three experiments examined how norms characteristic of a "culture of honor" manifest themselves in the cognitions, emotions, behaviors, and physiological reactions of southern White males. Partic- ipants were University of Michigan students who grew up in the North or South. In 3 experiments, they were insulted by a confederate who bumped into the participant and called him an "asshole." Compared with northerners--who were relatively unaffected by the insult--southerners were (a) more likely to think their masculine reputation was threatened, (b) more upset (as shown by a rise in cortisol levels), (c) more physiologically primed for aggression ( as shown by a rise in testosterone levels), (d) more cognitively primed for aggression, and (e) more likely to engage in aggressive and dominant behavior. Findings highlight the insult-aggression cycle in cultures of honor, in which insults diminish a man's reputation and he tries to restore his status by aggressive or violent behavior.
