In her writing, the specificity of hybridity breaks through restriction of domestic, social, political and cultural issues and makes her writing surpass the boundaries of races, cultures and space and time. It integrates Zhang's profound concern for human life and humanity with her exquisite literary sensibility. In my thesis, 1 deploy my study on this hybrid specificity, and also on the cultural phenomena relevant to Zhang Ailing in 1990s China, namely the "Zhang Ailing fever" and the nostalgia theme in Hong Kong film. By exploring the underlying relationship between the two issues on the basis of respective analyses of them, 1 try to enrich our understanding of this legendary writer and stimulate further thought on the broad and complex process of the "rehabilitation" of Zhang's literary reputation in both Western sinology and Chinese academia. III ABSTRAIT Franchir les Frontières: « L'hybridité» dans L'écriture de Zhang Ailing et ses Interprétations Multidimensionnelles dans la Chine Contemporaine Yuan Wang Zhang Ailing est une figure littéraire extraordinaire et importante de la Chine des années 40. Dans son écriture, la spécificité de « l'hybridité» efface les différences domestiques, sociales, politiques et culturelles, et de ce fait les différences raciales et spatio-temporelles. Cela intègre la préoccupation profonde de Zhang pour la vie humaine et l'humanité avec sa sensibilité littéraire exquise.Dans ma thèse, je me suis focalise sur l'étude de cette spécificité « hybride» et aussi sur le phénomène culturel pertinents à Zhang Ailing dans les années 90 en Chine, à savoir la « fièvre de Zhang Ailing » et le thème de nostalgie dans les films hongkongais. En explorent la relation fondamentale entre les deux problèmes sur la base d'analyses respectives de chacun, je vais tenter d'enrichir notre compréhension de cet écrivain légendaire et de réfléchir sur le processus large et complexe de « réhabilitation» de la réputation littéraire de Zhang dans la sinologie occidentale et l'éducation chinoise. Their encouragement, support and love offer me the power to pursue accomplishment. v Introduction Zhang Ailing (1920-1995) was an important literary figure who rose to prominence during China's turbulent 1940s. From a literary perspective, 1940s China manifested an extraordinary diversity of literary theories and genres, encompassing a wide range of contending cultural and ideological factors. In the difficult time of foreign invasion followed by civil war, the whole nation faced profound social, political, and cultural transformation. The brutal reality of the decade compelled many writers to ponder broadly and deeply the meaning of history, society, nation and culture. Confronted with unprecedented social, historical and political realities, writers engaged in intimate creative dialogue with the age. The discourse of modem enlightenment thought from the May Fourth period served as their primary foundation. The turbulence caused by the war and China's political partition into three geographical areas in the 1940s-the areas controlled by the Nationalists (KMT), the areas occupied

Fragments of a Female Self in Zhang Ailing’s Love In a Fallen City (倾城之恋) Alessandra Di Muzio Università Ca’ Foscari Venezia, Italia Abstract This article examines wreckage and war as key elements in Zhang Ailing’s novella Qing cheng zhi lian 倾城之恋 (Love in a Fallen City) exploring the strategies used by the female protagonist to engage on a nüxing 女性 ‘feminist’-oriented spatial quest for independence in a male-centered world. Analysed from a feminist perspective, these strategies emerge as potentially empowering and based on the idea of conflict/con- quest while dealing with man and romance, but they are also constantly threatened by the instability of history and by the lack of any true agency and gender-specific space for women in the 1940s Chinese society and culture. By analysing the floating/stability dichotomy and the spatial configurations of Shanghai and Hong Kong as described in the novella, the author argues Zhang Ailing’s depiction of Chinese women while dealing with history, society and the quest for self-affirmation is left in-between wreckage and survival, oppression and feminism, revealing her eccentric otherness as a woman and as a writer with respect to socially committed literature. First, there is more than enough theory and insufficient evidence. Second, it emphasizes translation but neglects the way to communicate through foreign students. In view of this situation, we take masterpieces of modern Chinese literature as the research object, and adopt empirical investigation methods, such as statistical analysis of the textbooks of Chinese as a foreign language, the questionnaire survey of foreign Chinese learners in the middle and advanced Chinese level, and the interviews of domestic and foreign Chinese teachers. According to the survey results, we have put forward the following suggestions: Chinese literature textbooks and comprehensive textbooks are arranged in a step-by-step manner, with the combination of points and faces; improving the literacy and Chinese literature awareness of Chinese teachers;

    SDC Paper No. 100/2012 (For discussion on 15.11.2012) Southern District Council Application for SDC Fund: Promotion of Southern District Literary Trail Purpose This paper aims to seek Members’ approval of an allocation of funds for promotion of the Southern District Literary Trail. The funds are intended to be used to, inter alia, produce publicity materials for six literary figures, produce a short film on Eileen CHANG and organise publicity projects on public arts education and literature in respect of the works of Eileen CHANG and XIAO Hong. Background 2. With a view to fostering literary education and creation in Hong Kong and promoting local tourism, the Southern District Council (SDC) initiated in late 2009 the development of a Southern District Literary Trail by connecting footprints of several contemporary literary figures and constructing landmarks along the way. At its 6th meeting held on 13 September 2012, the SDC endorsed the revised work targets, which include giving priority to the construction of the two landmarks at Repulse Bay (i.e. those for Eileen CHANG and XIAO Hong, two notable female writers). The construction works is expected to complete in 2014. Proposals Production of a Short Film on Eileen CHANG 3. Eileen CHANG’s life was intricately entwined with movies. She was fond of watching movies and had written a number of screenplays for the Motion Picture & General Investment Co. Ltd. at the request of SONG Qi. Her novels such as “Love in a Fallen City”, “Rouge of the North”, “Red Rose White Rose”, “Eighteen Springs”, “The Golden Cangue” and “Lust, Caution” have been adapted into movies or 1 television dramas.

Zhang's writing depicted paradoxical human natures, powerlessness, and sorrowful truths in everyday life without the political subtext that characterized other writers of the period. The collection consists of six boxes of materials in English and Chinese. While the collection includes some of her early Shanghai publications, the majority of the materials relate to her life and ongoing works after she immigrated to the United States in 1955. Language of Material: The correspondence is in Chinese, but the manuscripts and other materials are in both English and Chinese.
