Romania Redivivus
alexander clapp ROMANIA REDIVIVUS nce the badlands of neoliberal Europe, Romania has become its bustling frontier. A post-communist mafia state that was cast to the bottom of the European heap by opinion- makers sixteen years ago is now billed as the success story Oof eu expansion.1 Its growth rate at nearly 6 per cent is the highest on the continent, albeit boosted by fiscal largesse.2 In Bucharest more politicians have been put in jail for corruption over the past decade than have been convicted in the rest of Eastern Europe put together. Romania causes Brussels and Berlin almost none of the headaches inflicted by the Visegrád Group—Czechia, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia— which in 1993 declined to accept Romania as a peer and collectively entered the European Union three years before it. Romanians con- sistently rank among the most Europhile people in the Union.3 An anti-eu party has never appeared on a Romanian ballot, much less in the parliament. Scattered political appeals to unsavoury interwar traditions—Legionnairism, Greater Romanianism—attract fewer voters than do far-right movements across most of Western Europe. The two million Magyars of Transylvania, one of Europe’s largest minorities, have become a model for inter-ethnic relations after a time when the park benches of Cluj were gilded in the Romanian tricolore to remind every- one where they were. Indeed, perhaps the aptest symbol of Romania’s place in Europe today is the man who sits in the Presidential Palace of Cotroceni in Bucharest. Klaus Iohannis—a former physics teacher at a high school in Sibiu, once Hermannstadt—is an ethnic German head- ing a state that, a generation ago, was shipping hundreds of thousands of its ‘Saxons’ ‘back’ to Bonn at 4,000–10,000 Deutschmarks a head. -

Social egg freezing (SEF) allows women to preserve their fertility in anticipation of age-related fertility decline and ineffective fertility treatments at older ages. The purpose of this study was to summarize recent findings focusing on the challenges of elective egg freezing. -

128 CHAPTER 6 CRISIS WITH GERMANY It was shortly after New Year's day, 1939. I was sitting at my desk at the Foreign Ministry, going through the routine chores of a Secretary General, a post to which I had just been appointed. Suddenly the door opened without the ' customary knock. I raised my eyes; my eyebrows went up. The unannounced intruder was a slim, youngish, remarkably hand- some man. He was wearing a magnificent uniform, the like of which I had never seen before: royal blue, with red facings and pipings, and gold epaulettes and insignia. I started to rub my un- believing eyes. Was this a dream? What stage apparition was this? Would this gay musical comedy star break out in a song- and-dance act? But no. It was none other than the newly appointed Foreign Minister, my good friend Grigore Gafencu. Very far from sing- ing and dancing, he felt atrociously self-conscious in this fancy uniform, which King Carol had suddenly decided to impose on his cabinet ministers, and which shortly would become obligatory for all state officials without exception. Gafencu had decided to enter the government after some hesi- tation, yielding to the pressing requests of Carol whose intimate friend he had been in their youth. He had no part in the estab- lishment of the king's dictatorial regime. We were at a perilous crossroads: a grave crisis had broken out with Hitler, and Romania was under bereft of the effec- . direct threat, seemingly tive support of her allies and friends. Gafencu must have accepted this burden against his better judgment; but once he had done so, he had resolutely shouldered the load. -

The Replacement of Nicolae Petrescu-Cornnen from the Romanian Diplomacy Took Place in December 21 St, 1938
ACTA MOLDAVIAE MERJDIONALIS, XXVIII-XXIX, 2007-2008 168 CONSIDERAŢIIPRIVIND ÎNLOCUIREA LUI NICOLAE PETRESCU COMNENDE LA CONDUCEREA MINISTERULUI AFACERILOR RĂ ÂN ST INE AL ROM IEI (21 DECEMBRIE 1938) Adrian Viţalaru Abstract The replacement of Nicolae Petrescu-Cornnen from the romanian diplomacy took place in december 21 st, 1938. The idea of his replacement from the leadship of Foreign Affaires Ministery was vivacious since the begining of december, being part of th reshuffie tendency for the second guverment leaded by the Patriarch Miron Cristea. The politica! decision has been deterrnined by the international context to which the romanian diplomacy had to adapt, after the events that took place during auturnn 1938 and also by Carol II's attempt of calling to the Foreign Affairs Ministery a politician with superior charisma and influence. The chosen one was Grigore Gafencu, a very well known politica! man, with great appreciation from the romanian politica! background. The ex-minister was appointed as ambasador of Romania m Vatican, the place were he was active also from 1930 to 1932. -
