2018-2019 SEASON SYNOPSES MOON OVER BUFFALO (Play) by Ken Ludwig August 31-September 23, 2018 The hilarious Moon Over Buffalo centers on George and Charlotte Hay, fading stars of the 1950's. On the brink of a disastrous split- up caused by George’s dalliance with a young ingénue, they receive word that they might just have one last shot at stardom: Frank Capra is coming to town to see their matinee, and if likes what he sees, he might cast them in his movie remake of The Scarlet Pimpernel. Unfortunately for George and Charlotte, everything that could go wrong does go wrong, abetted by a visit from their daughter’s clueless fiancé and hilarious uncertainty about which play they are actually performing, caused by Charlotte’s deaf old stage-manager mother who hates every bone in George’s body. APPOINTMENT WITH DEATH (Play) by Agatha Christie October 26-November 18, 2018 An assorted group of travelers find themselves thrown together on an expedition. At the center of the group are Mrs. Boynton and her four stepchildren who never leave her side. This apparent devotion however is actually a façade for something far more sinister. Sarah King, a young English doctor, and her colleague, the eminent psychologist, Dr. Theodore Gerard, find themselves embroiled in a battle to free the children from the sadistic grasp of a tyrannical woman. This chilling play offers a unique take on the classic murder mystery, where Agatha Christie explores the realms of the sadistic mind. AS YOU LIKE IT (Play) by William Shakespeare February 1-24, 2019 In one of Shakespeare’s most beloved romantic pastoral comedies, we follow the young heroine Rosalind from the court of her vindictive uncle into the Eden-like Forest of Arden, where her banished father is living in exile. In order to avoid running into trouble, Rosalind disguises herself as a young man, and makes her way into the woods. She soon encounters the young, handsome Orlando, who is sick with love for Rosalind. Still disguised as a man, Rosalind tests Orlando’s feelings for her and teaches him about the nature of true love. THE HUNCHBACK OF (Musical) by Schonberg, Boubill and Kretmer April 5-May 5, 2019 (The Hunchback of Notre Dame will be presented if BCT is unable to obtain licensing for Les Miserable) Based on the novel and songs from the Disney animated feature, The Hunchback of Notre Dame tells the story of , the deformed bell-ringer held captive by his devious caretaker, Frollo. He escapes one day during a festival and joins the boisterous crowd, only to be treated cruelly by all but the beautiful gypsy, . Quasimodo isn’t the only one captivated by her free spirit, though – the handsome and Frollo are equally enthralled. As the three vie for her attention, Frollo embarks on a mission to destroy the gypsies – and it’s up to Quasimodo to save them all. THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK (Play) by Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett June 7-30, 2019 For nearly two years, Anne Frank, her father, mother, and sister, joined by the van Daan family, hide in a secret space above her father’s former office in Amsterdam, as the Nazis deport the Jews of Holland to their deaths. In her secret attic, Anne comes of age: she laughs, plays, fights with her mother, and falls in love for the first time; she captures her story in her daily diary. In spite of her oppressive circumstances and the horrors that surround her, Anne’s spirit transcends, as she voices her belief, “in spite of everything, that people are truly good at heart.” 25th ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE (Musical) by Finn/Sheinkin/Feldman October 5-14, 2018 An eclectic group of six kids vie for the spelling championship of a lifetime. While candidly disclosing hilarious and touching stories from their home lives, the tweens spell their way through a series of (potentially made-up) words, hoping never to hear the soul- crushing "ding" of the bell that signals a spelling mistake. (At least the losers get a juice box!) PLAY ON! (Play) by Rick Abbott May 17-26, 2019 One plucky community theater is about to produce a show called Murder Most Foul, a new “murder mystery play” with the same title as an Agatha Christie novel but with no relation whatsoever. The show is hilariously amateur, the “murder mystery” plot doesn’t really have a murder, and to top it off, the playwright keeps changing the story and script only two days from its premiere! In Act III, the company performs the actual show with hilarious mishaps at every turn!
