Audition Pack AUDITION PACK Please read all instructions carefully 1 ABOUT ‘HUNCHBACK’ What makes a monster and what makes a man? This is the central theme of The Hunchback of Notre Dame, a sweeping, grand-scale musical from Disney Theatrical. Based on the 1996 Disney film and Victor Hugo’s 1831 novel, The Hunchback of Notre Dame tells the story of Quasimodo, the hunchbacked bell-ringer of Notre Dame, and his desire to one day be a part of the outside world. When he summons the courage to attend the Feast of Fools, he meets Esmeralda, a compassionate gypsy who protects him from an angry mob. But at the same time, Quasimodo’s master, the archdeacon Dom Claude Frollo, and the new captain of the guard, Phoebus de Martin, fall in love with the beautiful girl. Adding to Quasimodo’s struggle is his punishment and derision from Frollo, following years of psychological abuse, and the danger posed by the gypsies, who are willing to kill any outsiders who venture into their secret hideout. But before Paris is burned to the ground, will Quasimodo be able to save Esmeralda from Frollo’s lust and anger? Will she return Quasimodo’s affection? Who is the true monster of Notre Dame? CHOIR An exciting opportunity for a separate choir to appear in our production made up of 16 singers (no acting or movement). This would suit those who are strong harmony singers, perhaps attend a choir at the school already and have limited time to rehearse. Mr North will be choosing those who wish to be part of the choir, so please speak to him directly at the start of the Michaelmas term if you are interested. The choir appear on stage, at the back for the whole production, singing whilst either sat or standing. 7 AUDITIONS WHO? AUDITION ALL CAST Warm up & Movement routine on the day (unprepared) and then you need to consider which category you would like audition for; ENSEMBLE Those who want to go for an ensemble role (which is a choral singing and acting role such as a congregant/gypsy etc) then you will need to sing “Topsy Turvy” in a small group (formed on the day or pre-formed for those who wish to practice together beforehand.

I was bowled over by the performances, which I will go into further, and by director John Neuman’s utilization of the stage. Not only did he magically re-create Notre Dame and the streets of Paris in the limited space available to him, but he also moved a large cast through that space with a sure hand. All the elements of this show came together so well that time whisked by during the two-and-a-half-hour performance. Of course, who would ever want to leave the streets of Paris and this group of charming performers, regardless of the tragedy that gets told? The show has music by Alan Mencken (“Beauty and the Beast,” “Little Mermaid,” “Little Shop of Horrors” and “Sister Act”), and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz (“Godspell,””Pippin” and “Wicked”). The show was commissioned by Walt Disney. The focus of the story is much changed in the current musical adaptation. The original book had large portions describing the setting, i.e. the Cathedral of Notre Dame. Author Victor Hugo was writing this tale, in large part, to celebrate its Gothic architecture and to preserve the building intact in the face of those who wanted to “improve” it and make it more contemporary.

Let’s start with Christ the King Sunday – the very last Sunday in the Christian Year before the start of Advent, which is next weeK! Jesus’s mission as Christ the KinG was to establish the KinGdom of God…here…on earth…a mission he continues to fulfill throuGh us, his disciples. His Kingdom was radically different from the Kingdom of Imperial Rome and their Jewish puppets – the Herodian kinGs in Palestine where Jesus lived. In fact, Jesus and his Kingdom inauGurated a radical reversal of the values and leadership style of ImPerial Rome. It reads: "The Muskets of Gascony: The Revolt of Bernard d'Audijos by Armand Daudeyos, translated by J. H. M. Salmon." This is false. When you write a historical novel things do seem to become falsified at times. I am the actual author, and Armand Daudeyos, the supposed descendant of the hero (Daudeyos is the Gascon form of d'Audijos) is a faction. I adopted this device for several reasons. First, it adds an air of mystery to pretend that one has discovered the manuscript of a historical novel based on real events in the seventeenth century and written in the Romantic vogue of the nineteenth century. Second, it allows me to insert a "translator's preface" explaining how close the book is to what actually happened. And third, it protects me from the reproaches of my colleagues for betraying my profession.

As the bells of Notre Dame’s cathedral sound in fifteenth-century Paris, Quasimodo - a deformed, captive bell-ringer - observes the city’s Feast of Fools from afar. Escaping his captor Frollo to join the festivities, Quasimodo is rejected by every reveler except the beautiful Gypsy, Esmeralda – with whom he is immediately smitten.
