ABOUT ‘HUNCHBACK’

What makes a monster and what makes a man? This is the central theme of The Hunchback of , a sweeping, grand-scale musical from Disney Theatrical. Based on the 1996 Disney film and ’s 1831 novel, The Hunchback of Notre Dame tells the story of , the hunchbacked bell-ringer of Notre Dame, and his desire to one day be a part of the outside world. When he summons the courage to attend the , he meets , a compassionate gypsy who protects him from an angry mob. But at the same time, Quasimodo’s master, the archdeacon Dom , and the new captain of the guard, Phoebus de Martin, fall in love with the beautiful girl. Adding to Quasimodo’s struggle is his punishment and derision from Frollo, following years of psychological abuse, and the danger posed by the gypsies, who are willing to kill any outsiders who venture into their secret hideout. But before is burned to the ground, will Quasimodo be able to save Esmeralda from Frollo’s lust and anger? Will she return Quasimodo’s affection? Who is the true monster of Notre Dame?

Rehearsals, Monday, Tuesdays & Thursdays 1635 – 2000 A more specific rehearsal schedule will be sent to you in due course, should you be successful at the audition. You will be expected to rehearse twice a week in a chorus role and 3-4 times a week if playing a principal role. Schedules will get busier as we draw nearer to production week.

Weekend rehearsals, 1100 – 1600/1700 - Saturday 19th September 2020 (Open Morning), Sunday 27th September, Saturday 11th October, Sunday 18th October, Sunday 11th November, Sunday 22nd November, Sunday 6th December, Sunday 10th January 2021, Sunday 17th January and Sunday 7th February (tech). (Not all weekend rehearsals are all cast)

Performances, Wednesday 10th , Thursday 11th, Friday 12th, 1930 & Saturday 13th (1430 & 1930) February 2021, Hayward Theatre.

Registers are taken at all rehearsals – three unauthorised absences from rehearsals will result in your role being given to someone else.

ENSEMBLE / DANCERS

Congregation, an ensemble of storytellers who portray various GYPSIES, SOLDIERS, REVELERS, PARISHIONERS, PRIESTS, PROSTITUTES and CITIZENS of Paris.

CHOIR

An exciting opportunity for a separate choir to appear in our production made up of 16 singers (no acting or movement). This would suit those who are strong harmony singers, perhaps attend a choir at the school already and have limited time to rehearse. Mr North will be choosing those who wish to be part of the choir, so please speak to him directly at the start of the Michaelmas term if you are interested. The choir appear on stage, at the back for the whole production, singing whilst either sat or standing.

AUDITIONS

WHO? AUDITION ALL CAST Warm up & Movement routine on the day (unprepared) and then you need to consider which category you would like audition for; ENSEMBLE Those who want to go for an ensemble role (which is a choral singing and acting role such as a congregant/gypsy etc) then you will need to sing “Topsy Turvy” in a small group (formed on the day or pre-formed for those who wish to practice together beforehand. Max 4 in a group). No acting audition required. SPECIALIST DANCER Miss Hobbs is looking for a specialist group of dancers to dance the more technical routines in the show and will be playing revellers and gypsies. Those of you who wish to be part of Miss Hobbs’ specialist dance crew in the show you will need to learn a dance routine from “Topsy Turvy” and dance in small groups on the day. You will also need to learn the ensemble singing piece ‘Topsy Turvy’ (link here) either as a solo or in a group (formed on the day or pre-formed for those who wish to practice together beforehand. Max 4 in a singing group. MINOR ROLE Those who want to go for a minor role (such as a gargoyle, statue, St Aphrodisius, Jehan or Florika and part of the ensemble) you will be expected to perform 1 solo song from the minor role audition list on p10 Graham (MD) will be testing your individual vocal range.

Choose 1 minor role from any of the 3 available audition pieces (see p11). Learn off by heart and be prepared to be partnered up on the day. (You may wish to rehearse in pre-formed groups). It would make sense to choose a character that shows you off at your best, but do not worry if it isn’t the actual character you wish to go for. Remember it’s not all about the number of lines you have… it’s what you do when you aren’t speaking that is also important. Acting is reacting! PRINCIPAL ROLE If you would like to go for a major character (see p7 for who is a major character) you will be expected to perform 1 or 2 solo from the audition list on p9 (1 or 2 depending on whether you would like to go for

more than one character or show different aspects of your voice). You may be asked to sing a short section of another character song if the panel requests it. Graham (MD) will be testing your individual vocal range.

Choose one or two roles from the three available audition pieces and you are required to perform as that character for all of the audition pieces i.e. if choosing Quasimodo, you will need to learn Quasimodo’s lines for each of the audition pieces he appears in. Learn off by heart and be prepared to be partnered up on the day. (You may wish to rehearse in pre-formed groups). It would make sense to choose a character (or two) that shows you off at your best. Mr Huntington is looking for those who can take specific direction, to create larger than life characters, ‘let go’ and impress – be prepared!
