THE SENSE OF A BEGINNING: THEORY OF THE LITERARY OPENING A Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy By Niels Buch Leander January 2012 © 2012 Niels Buch Leander THE SENSE OF A BEGINNING: THEORY OF THE LITERARY OPENING Niels Buch Leander, Ph.D. Cornell University 2012 This dissertation is the first comprehensive study in English of the literary opening and its impact on modern literary criticism. It thus fills an astounding gap in Anglo-American criticism, which has neglected openings and instead focused on endings, as exemplified by Frank Kermode‘s The Sense of an Ending (1967). Through a study of the constant formal challenges of novelistic openings, primarily during modernism, this dissertation illustrates the significance of the opening in literary creation and in literary criticism. Chapter 1 analyses how openings attempt to lend authority from natural beginnings as well as from cosmologies, which leads to the conclusion that the beginning of a story is also a story of the beginning. Chapter 2 examines literary openings more closely from a formal and narrative point of view, thereby outlining a theory of openings based on linguistic considerations such as pragmatic conventions and cooperative rules. The chapter establishes a taxonomy of openings based on five ―signals‖ of the opening. In particular, the chapter develops the concept of ―perspectival abruptness‖, which is to be differentiated from the temporal abruptness known as in medias res. ―Perspectival abruptness‖ is presented as a tool for the critic and the literary historian to understand the particular nature of modern fiction. -

BOOK REVIEWS *MASSIMO VERDICCHIO. Of Dissimulation: Allegory and Irony in Dante's Commedia. Warsaw: Wydawnictwo Energeia, 1997. Pp.147. *MASSIMO VERDICCHIO. Naming Things: Aesthetics, Philosophy and History in Benedetto Croce. Istituto italiano per gli studi filosofici; Naples: Citta del Sole, 1999. This book is most sharply defined by what it opposes: namely, theologically-motivated, presumably pious criticism of Dante. That might make a book less timely that is published decades after the moment in Dante studies to which it responds and that actually produced it. Verdicchio is no longer (or is even less) alone in taking a stance against theologizing readings of the Commedia. Reading the poem as undivine has had a certain vogue, and it is a pity that Verdicchio's work was not a part of that. Originally composed in the mid-1980s, according to the Preface, "the manuscript has been knocking on closed doors since then" (9). The work's polemical rejection of Singletonian premises may have prejudiced its reception by North American readers—to whom, nevertheless, it is in every way addressed. As a belated critique of Singleton, its anti-theological ideology is perhaps now stale, yet the exacting intelligence of its detailed readings can nevertheless contribute important revisions and new insights to this line of criticism. There is genuine rigor and coherence in the views that are developed from chapter to chapter and a number of challenging proposals for reading far-reaching significance in what appear to be only minute details. Verdicchio's overarching project is to correct prevailing criticism by proving Dante's poem to be an exaltation of philosophy, not faith. -

By focusing on the problem of immigration and its inevitable traumatic results on the migrants, Tahar Ben Jelloun’s Leaving Tangier fully presents Azel (the protagonist) and his acquaintances’ search for identity in terms of history, religion, nationality and cultural identity. Tahar Ben Jelloun’s Leaving Tangier is the story of a Moroccan brother and sister who are burning with the desire to migrate to Spain in order to attain better life. The accomplishment of their dreams actualizes at the cost of some compromises and sacrifices that end with the protagonists’ physical, emotional failure, and annihilation. The winner of Prix Goncourt for La Nuit Sacrée (The Sacred Night) in 1987, a Moroccan novelist Tahar Ben Jelloun is one of the most prolific and important writers of the recent years. As a novelist and critic, Ben Jelloun artfully combines the fact and fiction, past and present, East and West in his works. in this respect, he creates multidimensional writings that can be read and interpreted from several perspectives. Tahar Ben Jelloun’s Leaving Tangier (2006) presents the issues of “wounded childhood,” “solitude,” “displacement,” and “alienation” both individually and collectively in the colonial history of Tangier. This study focuses on the issues of discrimination, assimilation, and cultural identity, experienced by the characters in the novel, resulting from the immigration of individuals from their homelands to Europe in order to find better life conditions. -

Since the mid-twentieth century, due to growing interest in Islam and the Arab world on the global scene, the Arab side of North African identity has been given paramount recognition. More often than not, North Africa is considered part of the Middle East rather than an integral member of an African community, although in spite of shifting political winds in recent years, the literatures that have emerged from North Africa have been firmly embedded in African literary traditions since antiquity, and share strong links with their sub-Saharan counterparts. -
