General Alexandre Gefen, Réparer le monde: la littérature française face au XXIe siècle, Corti, 2017, 392 pp., argues that contemporary French literature has undergone a therapeutic turn, with both writing and reading now conceived in terms of healing, helping, and doing good. G. defends this thesis with extraordinary thoroughness as he examines the turn’s various guises: as objects of literature’s care here feature the self and its fractures; trauma, both individual and collective; illness, mental and physical; mourning and forgetfulness, personal and historical; and endangered bonds, with humans and beyond, on local and global scales. This amounts to what G. calls a new ‘paradigme clinique’ and, like any paradigm shift, this one appears replete with contradictions, tensions, and opponents, not least owing to the residual influence of preceding paradigms; G.’s analysis is especially impressive when unpicking the ways in which contemporary writers negotiate their sustained attachments to a formal, intransitive conception of literature, and/or more overtly revolutionary political projects. His thesis is supported by an enviable breadth of reference: G. lays out the diverse intellectual, technological, and socioeconomic histories at work in this development, and touches on close to 200 contemporary writers. Given the broad, synthetic nature of the work’s endeavour, individual writers/works are rarely discussed for longer than a page, and though G.’s commentary is always insightful, specialists on particular authors or social/historical trends will surely find much to work with and against here.

    La Mulâtresse During the Two World Wars: Race, Gender, and Sexuality in Suzanne Lacascade’s Claire-Solange, âme-africaine and Mayotte Capécia’s Je suis Martiniquaise Nathan H. Dize When we think of the literature produced before, during, and after the two World Wars we rarely think of the Caribbean as a site of significant literary output. Typically, we privilege a white, male, European literary voice. If we do consider literature from elsewhere, it usually follows a pattern of normative privilege. Therefore, it is useful to consider the female Caribbean voice and its response to colonialism, racism, and gender violence during the period between 1914 and 1945. Claire-Solange, âme-africaine offers arguably one of the best examples of a female Caribbean perspective on World War I as well as global politics. Although Suzanne Lacascade’s novel has been obscured and lost over time, the Martinican author portrays everyday scenarios in France during World War I to empower marginalized Caribbean women during one of the most tumultuous moments in the early 20th Century. While Lacascade shifts our lens to the First World War, Mayotte Capécia’s Je suis Martiniquaise is set, in part, during the blockade years in Martinique during World War II under Admiral Georges Robert. Together, these two Martinican female writers – even though they are less well known than their canonical male compatriots Aimé Césaire, Édouard Glissant, and Patrick Chamoiseau – lucidly portray the everyday lives of mulatto women in Martinique and in France as they negotiate their place on the periphery of French society. I argue below that through their interrogations of the everyday during these two wars that Lacascade and Capécia generate female protagonists who challenge racial, cultural, gender, and sexual stereotypes, which have historically rendered mixed race women as marginalized figures in Francophone Caribbean literature.

A former psychiatrist has won France’s most prestigious literary prize, the Prix Goncourt, with her novel centred on the Spanish civil war. Lydie Salvayre’s book Pas Pleurer (Don’t Cry) saw off competition from, among others, the bestselling French author David Foenkinos, to win the coveted award. Salvayre, 66, whose parents were exiled republicans who fled Franco’s regime in Spain, grew up near the city of Toulouse in south-west France, speaking Spanish. She learned French after arriving at primary school.     Udasmoro / Experiencing Literature 72 EXPERIENCING LITERATURE Discourses of Islam through Michel Houellebecq’s Soumission Wening Udasmoro Universitas Gadjah Mada [email protected] Abstract This article departs from the conventional assumption that works of literature are only texts to be read. Instead, it argues that readers bring these works to life by contextualizing them within themselves and draw from their own life experiences to understand these literary texts’ deeper meanings and themes. Using Soumission (Surrender), a controversial French novel that utilizes stereotypes in its exploration of Islam in France, this research focuses on the consumption of literary texts by French readers who are living or have lived in a country with a Muslim majority, specifically Indonesia. It examines how the novel’s stereotypes of Muslims and Islam are understood by a sample of French readers with experience living in Indonesia. The research problematizes whether a textual and contextual gap exists in their reading of the novel, and how they justify this gap in their social practices. In any reading of a text, the literal meaning (surface meaning) is taken as it is or the hidden meaning (deep meaning), but in a text that is covert in meaning, the reader may either venture into probing the underlying true meaning or accept the literal meaning of the text. However, this remains a point of contention and this research explores this issue using critical discourse analysis in Soumission’s text, in which the author presents the narrator’s views about Islam. The question that underpins this analysis is whether a reader’s life experiences and the context influence his or her view about Islam in interpreting Soumission’s text.

Caribbean Literature (Francophone) 137 CARIBBEAN LITERATURE (FRANCOPHONE), or Antillean literature, is the literature in French from Guadeloupe, Martinique, French Guiana, and Haiti. Ex­ cept in the case of Haiti, this literature developed along three major concepts: negritude, Caribbeanness, and Creoleness. Critics trace its origins to the rise of the negritude movement (in the 1930s), when black students, intellectuals, and artists revolted against France's assimilation policies to adopt an ideology aimed at restor­ ing black and African values embedded in popular culture. The literary landmark 138 Caribbean Literature (Francophone) was undoubtedly Aime Cesaire's Notebook of a Return to My Native Land ( Cahier d'un retour au pays natal, 1939). Four centuries of slavery and colonization had a debilitating effect on the Antil­ leans' psyche, fostering the belief that rescue from savagery was possible only through Western culture.

RESPONSIBILITY, INJUSTICE AND THE AMERICAN DILEMMA Mohammad-Mahmoud Ould Mohamedou* Catching a nonchalant America engaged more than ever in the busi- ness of entertaining itself and ignoring its responsibilities as a superpower, the September 11, 2001 attacks on New York and Washington marked the end of American insouciance. In spite of all that has been written and said about these events, there remains, paradoxically, a deep-seated reluctance in the United States to openly confront the reasons behind the assault, and to answer accurately the one question that continues to matter urgently: Why did this happen? Why indeed did this happen? What was driving the per- petrators of the attacks? What made these modem, urban-savvy, college- educated young men plan such an operation so professionally and so care- fully? From where did they muster their motivation and dedication? And why were they willing to give their lives in their prime? Because the attacks were the work of nineteen Arab Muslims (in- cluding fifteen Saudis led by an Egyptian, an Emirati, and a Lebanese), the required analysis also concerns the relationship between the United States (and the Western world as a whole) and the Arabo-Islamic world.
