Following the Trail of the Snake: a Life History of Cobra Mansa “Cobrinha” Mestre of Capoeira
ABSTRACT Title of Document: FOLLOWING THE TRAIL OF THE SNAKE: A LIFE HISTORY OF COBRA MANSA “COBRINHA” MESTRE OF CAPOEIRA Isabel Angulo, Doctor of Philosophy, 2008 Directed By: Dr. Jonathan Dueck Division of Musicology and Ethnomusicology, School of Music, University of Maryland Professor John Caughey American Studies Department, University of Maryland This dissertation is a cultural biography of Mestre Cobra Mansa, a mestre of the Afro-Brazilian martial art of capoeira angola. The intention of this work is to track Mestre Cobrinha’s life history and accomplishments from his beginning as an impoverished child in Rio to becoming a mestre of the tradition—its movements, music, history, ritual and philosophy. A highly skilled performer and researcher, he has become a cultural ambassador of the tradition in Brazil and abroad. Following the Trail of the Snake is an interdisciplinary work that integrates the research methods of ethnomusicology (oral history, interview, participant observation, musical and performance analysis and transcription) with a revised life history methodology to uncover the multiple cultures that inform the life of a mestre of capoeira. A reflexive auto-ethnography of the author opens a dialog between the experiences and developmental steps of both research partners’ lives. Written in the intersection of ethnomusicology, studies of capoeira, social studies and music education, the academic dissertation format is performed as a roda of capoeira aiming to be respectful of the original context of performance. The result is a provocative ethnographic narrative that includes visual texts from the performative aspects of the tradition (music and movement), aural transcriptions of Mestre Cobra Mansa’s storytelling and a myriad of writing techniques to accompany the reader in a multi-dimensional journey of multicultural understanding. -

Almeida, M.C.; Silva, K.L.F.; Domas, T.; Abreu, F.B.; Seibert, C.S. Fauna e flora do Aeroporto de Palmas (TO): um alerta para a sua conservação. Revista Brasileira de Ecoturismo, São Paulo, v.12, n.4, ago/out 2019, pp.457-474. -

In this paper, we analyze the air transportation network in Brazil with complex network features to better understand its characteristics. In our analysis, we built networks composed either by national or by international flights. We also consider the network when both types of flights are put together. Interesting conclusions emerge from our analysis. For instance, Viracopos Airport (Campinas City) is the most central and connected airport on the national flights network. Any operational problem in this airport separates the Brazilian national network into six distinct subnetworks. Moreover, the Brazilian air transportation network exhibits small world characteristics and national connections network follows a power law distribution. Therefore, our analysis sheds light on the current Brazilian air transportation infrastructure, bringing a novel understanding that may help face the recent fast growth in the usage of the Brazilian transport network. -

This study aimed to analyse whether the European Union policies in this field of transportation are considering the equity as a factor, whether they ensure the main purposes of the EU and whether they are improving the cohesion between countries. For this, three different indicators were created in order to evaluate equity in air transportation in the EU: Availability, the existence of routes between countries; Affordability, if the prices take into account the purchasing power of each country; and Business Convenience, to evaluate the cost of travelling by air on business in Europe. -
How to Export to Brazil
How to Export to Brazil November 2010 Ref.: Service Agreement signed between the Trade and Investment Promotion Department of the Ministry of External Relations and the Center for Foreign Trade Studies Foundation (FUNCEX). INTRODUCTION Brazil is the world’s fifth largest country with an area of 8,514,876 km2, occupying 21% of the total surface area of the American continent and 47.7% of South America. It is also the fifth most populous nation on earth with an estimated 185 million inhabitants, according to preliminary figures of the 2010 census of the Brazilian Institute for Geography and Statistics (Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística – IBGE), a total projected to grow to 207 million by 2020. Brazil is a federal republic composed of the Union, 26 states, the Federal District, in addition to nearly 5,560 municipalities. The country is divided into five major regions: North, Northeast, South, Southeast, and Center-West. In 2009, Gross Domestic Product (GDP) stood at US$ 1.5 trillion (R$ 3.1 trillion), placing the nation’s economy among the eight largest in the world. National economic performance has been strong, registering an average growth rate of 4.8% in the period 2004-2008. In 2010, GDP grew nearly 8%, recovering from the modest decline in 2009 spawned by the 2008 international financial crisis. Growth has been sustained, meanwhile, while maintaining overall macroeconomic stability. For several years running, inflation has settled within the established target range (4.5% per annum ± 2 percentage points), the public deficit has remained low (on the order of 3% of GDP), and the net public debt has been kept at manageable levels (approximately 40% of GDP), enabling a steady, if gradual, reduction in interest rates. -

Bimba's Rhythm Is One, Two, Three
Bimba’s Rhythm is one, two, three: From Resistance to Transformation through Brazilian Capoeira By Lang Maria Liu A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Leadership, Higher and Adult Education Ontario Institute for Studies in Education University of Toronto © Copyright by Lang Maria Liu (2013) BIMBA’S RHYTHM IS ONE, TWO, THREE: FROM RESISTANCE TO TRANSFORMATION THROUGH BRAZILIAN CAPOEIRA Doctor of Philosophy (2013) Lang Maria Liu Department of Leadership, Higher and Adult Education University of Toronto Abstract Capoeira is a Brazilian fighting art with roots in slavery that blends live music, dance, play and ritual. It is also an embodied form of knowledge that is holistic and sometimes profoundly transformative – a way of seeing and being that embraces an Afro- Brazilian vision of the world. Using personal lived experience and collected oral testimony related in a story-telling form, the study explores the knowledge embedded within capoeira through the lives of practitioners and through practitioners’ explanations of their teachings. The question of whether capoeira has a common essence, or more specifically, whether the capoeira of twentieth century Bahia from which all modern schools ultimately trace their origins has an essence, is explored. In the thesis, capoeira is discovered to be an expression of resistance and transformation. Capoeira, the author discovers, is a form of resistance in that its traditional teachings reflect a communal, non-materialistic and sensuous stance, in opposition to the dominant individualistic, capitalistic, techno-scientific approach that has dominated the industrialized West. Capoeira is also a source of transformation in that it allows individuals to develop to their fullest expression – a self that encompasses the physical, spiritual, emotional and intellectual dimensions – and helps people integrate within a web of relations, human, animal, or other. -
