Legislative Council Secretariat FS12/13-14 FACT SHEET Hawker policy in Thailand 1. Background 1.1 Similar to many other Asian countries, Thailand has a long history of street vending. In Bangkok, the largest city in Thailand, street vending has provided local Thai people with cheap and convenient access to a wide range of goods and a means of making a living. According to a survey conducted by the International Labour Office1, a majority of street vendors surveyed were satisfied with their occupation because of the income earning opportunity and work autonomy.2 In recent years, street vending has also been considered as a way to nurture entrepreneurship, as well as adding to the tourist attractions of Bangkok by bringing vibrancy and vitality to the city. 1.2 In Bangkok, street vending has brought with it urban problems such as obstruction to pedestrian and vehicular traffic. It has also given rise to hygienic problem as many of street vending activities are related to the sale of cooked food along the streets. As such, the local government has designated various locations as street vending areas subject to regulatory controls such as the restrictions on the trading hours of street vendors. A escolha se deu em face deste segmento ser considerado estratégico no processo de integração dos centros produtivos do país e do Conesul da América. A visão central encontra-se na dimensão econômica. Direciona-se o estudo no intuito de desvendar as relações de produção diretas e indiretas. Para a identificação e a avaliação da estrutura produtiva disponível no espaço aeroportuário utilizou-se como teoria norteadora o conceito de cluster. Buscou-se evidenciar a importância dos aeroportos como centro de negócios. No estudo de caso foram analisadas a Infraero, as empresas aéreas e as prestadoras de serviços. Procurou-se identificar e avaliar a cooperação produtiva existente entre elas. Quanto aos resultados obtidos, com base ao referencial teórico aplicado, conclui-se que não se pode caracterizar, ainda, a existência de um cluster no AHL, embora exista indicativo de sua formação no espaço. -

Números inexpressivos em relação ao que gostarí- amos de fazer e às necessidades do país, mas bastante relevantes ao refletirem o engajamento dos funcionários da empresa, aos quais gostaria de agradecer e dedicar este feito. Por trás de cada ação, há a atuação obstinada de funcionários da Infraero, que se dispõem a estender suas jornadas de trabalho num terceiro expediente, em sábados e domingos para ajudar pessoas que sequer conhecem. Abstêm-se do convívio com as suas famílias para se dedicarem a outras, cujas vidas de priva- ção acompanham da janela do escritório sem nunca se acostu- marem ou se conformarem. Interview: Civil Aviation Minister Wellington Moreira Franco --“I am certain our airports will be ready to handle the World Cup.”— Brazil’s airports will be ready for the soccer World Cup, to be hosted in 12 Brazilian cities starting June 12, but not in accordance with every detail of the government’s original plan for the event. At least one airport will be serviced by temporary facilities. Another will have a contingency plan in place in the wake of a recent power blackout. Longer term, Brazil’s government needs to speed up work on expansion and technical upgrades at some of its airports while simultaneously moving ahead with an ambitious program of private concession auctions. These were the messages from Civil Aviation Minister Wellington Moreira Franco at a recent meeting with investors and reporters. Excerpts follow: • On preparations for the soccer World Cup: “I am certain our airports will be ready to handle the World Cup. I’m confident we won’t have another blackout at Rio’s airport, like the one on April 18, during the World Cup. There’s no risk of blackouts at other Brazilian airports.” • On the blackout at Rio de Janeiro’s international airport: “The airport administration blames the electric company and the electric company blames the airport administration for the blackout. I’m going to make sure there are no more misunderstandings of this nature. Together, the airport administration and the electric company are going to iron out a contingency plan. It’s not that difficult. We’re not going to tolerate another blackout.” • On construction delays at Fortaleza’s airport: “Work (to expand capacity) at the Fortaleza airport is far behind schedule. -

I was asking two Mormon missionaries just outside the customs inspection in the São Paulo International Airport, engaging in what would be my final conversation with Americans for eight weeks. I had just gotten off the plane after a sleepless night and felt tired, excited, and very confused at the same time as I just passed inspection. From what my parents and other sources told me, long lines and intensive baggage verification was routine; however, I was able to pass through in about a minute without a second glance. “But isn't Customs supposed to be a bit more careful and need to inspect my luggage?” I asked the missionaries again.
