At the top station walk down the steps to turn right along via Roma. Here you can see lots of charming buildings dating back to the early 20th century, the golden era for Brunate’s tourism, like Villa Pirotta (Federico Frigerio, 1902) or the fountain called “Tre Fontane” with a Campari advertising bas-relief of the 30es. Turn left to follow via Nidrino, and pass by the Chalet Sonzogno (1902). Do not follow via Monte Rosa but instead walk down to the sportscentre. At the end of the football pitch follow the track on the right marked as “Strada Regia.” The trail slowly works its way down to the Monti di Blevio . Ignore the “Strada Regia” which leads to Capovico but continue straight along the flat path until you reach Monti di Sorto .

GHIA Spring 2010 A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for a baccalaureate degree in Journalism with honors in Journalism Reviewed and approved by Russell Frank Associate Professor Honors Adviser Thesis Supervisor Russ Eshleman Senior Lecturer Second Faculty Reader ABSTRACT At the beginning of the 2000s, three factories in Asti, a small Italian town, went broke and closed in quick succession. Hundreds of men were laid off. After some time, an investigation mounted by local prosecutors began to reveal what led to bankruptcy. A group of Italian and Spanish entrepreneurs organized a scheme to fraudulently bankrupt their own factories. Globalization made production more profitable where manpower and machinery are cheaper. A well-planned fraudulent bankruptcy would kill three birds with one stone: disposing of non- competitive facilities, fleecing creditors and sidestepping Italian labor laws. These managers hired a former labor union leader, Silvano Sordi, who is also a notorious “fixer.” According to the prosecutors, Sordi bribed prominent labor union leaders of the CGIL (Italian General Confederation of Labor), the major Italian labor union. My investigation shows that smaller, local scandals were part of a larger scheme that led to the divestments of relevant sectors of the Italian industry. Sordi also played a key role in many shady businesses – varying from awarding bogus university degrees to toxic waste trafficking. My research unveils an expanded, loose network that highlights the multiple connections between political, economic and criminal forces in the Italian system.

ITINERARY: Cavargna - Monti Coloné - San Lucio WALKING TIME ONE WAY: 2 h ASCENT: 471 m DIFFICULTY: Steep climb requiring good fitness levels TRAIL SIGNS: From Cavargna to Monti Coloné: red-white-red signposts with a crossed “no. 3” CONNECTIONS: Bus C14 (Menaggio-Cavargna) to Cavargna N.B.: Avalanche beacon mandatory on snow covered trails above 1500 m ROUTE: Cavargna (1071 m) is the highest municipality in the province of Como and lies in the remote valley of Val Cavargna, clustered to the slopes of Monte Garzirola. From the bus stop, head to the Parish church and take the track on the left side of the church climbing uphill to the “Colonia”. The path follows a short stretch of “Sentiero delle 4 Valli”, a 50 km long hiking trail that takes you from Breglia, above Menaggio, to Dasio above Lake Lugano. The trail winds up its way through four valleys - Val Sanagra, Val Cavargna, Val Rezzo and Valsolda - and can be walked in three days. The path skirts the edge of a beech wood called “Bosco Sacro” - which forms a natural barrier against snow and landslides - before entering the steep, narrow Val Marda.
