LEGAMBIENTE Workcamps 2018 LEGAMBIENTE Workcamps 2018 LEGAMBIENTE WHO ARE WE? Legambiente is a non-profit leading environmental organisation in Italy that works for the safeguarding and enhancement of natural resources; environment; common health; animal and plant species; historical, artistic and cultural heritage; territories and landscapes. It is formed by 20 regional committees and around 1000 local groups. Since its foundation in 1980, Legambiente’s hallmark is the scientific environmentalism, which is the willingness to build every environmental protection project on a solid base made of scientific data. Legambiente’s mission is to make environmental culture at the centre of a new kind of development and diffused well-being. Important values for the association are the improvement of environmental quality, the fight against all forms of pollution, a wise use of natural resources, the construction of a more balanced relationship between human beings and the nature. Spreading those values could be an effective way to respond to the challenges of our time: the modernization of the economy, the commitment to beat unemployment, the struggle for peace and against all forms of discrimination and social injustice, the effort to consider globalization not only as a mere trading of goods but also as a means to improve quality of life and to give rights to billions of men and women forced to live in poverty. LEGAMBIENTE’S WORKCAMPS Legambiente has been organising volunteering campaigns since 1991, promoting summer-camps in many protected areas both in Italy and abroad. Voluntary work camps have three main objectives: - safeguard and enhance the Italian environmental, historical, cultural and artistic heritage; - raise the awareness of local communities and foreign volunteers about the value of the natural and cultural heritage and spread sustainable and responsible lifestyles; - build peace through cultural exchange. Voluntary projects also help in promoting green tourism, developing sustainable economy, stimulating people to be active citizens and participate in decision-making processes that shape their future as communities. Work organization. Each work camp can be differently organized according to its specific needs. Volunteers will be working approximately 30 hours/week. Sometimes they may be asked for working over the weekend or early in the morning in case of high temperature. Volunteers are expected to be open-minded, flexible, and adaptable to different situations. Moreover, they need to be inclined to face either lacks or unexpected events with a positive attitude. Not elsewhere specified, special skills are not required. Nevertheless, participation, enthusiasm and motivation are welcome! Usually volunteers sleep in mixed rooms. Single or double rooms are not available. Shifts for cooking and cleaning are scheduled during the first day. Each volunteer is responsible for all aspects of the daily life on the work camp. Food. In the most part of our workcamps food will be almost vegetarian and based on local products. Volunteers will eat meat a very few times. Language: English is the official language of the work camp. Nonetheless, in some workcamps implemented in remote villages, local communities can only speak Italian. Each workcamp will host a maximum of 2 volunteers for each country, in order to create a heterogeneous group and to foster a real cultural exchange. Participation fee: adult workcamps don’t foresee any additional fee. In teenage and family workcamps a participation fee is required and is to be brought in cash directly to the camp; the whole amount is addressed to the local group organising the camp and will be totally used to cover part of the expenses of the camp itself. Insurance: volunteers are insured for permanent damages caused by accidents and third person liability. For non-European volunteers, it is recommended to be provided with a health insurance. The aim is to clean and protect the moun Orfano's enviroment and his trails. During the workcamp volunteers can partecipate to Baffest, wich is a music and food festival promoted by "I Frattimi" to collect money to plant trees all over Franciacorta. LEGAMBIENTE LOCAL GROUP: Legambiente Ilaria Alpi promotes initiatives against the soil consumption and for the conservation of natural resources. We cooperate with other local association organizing cultural events in order to raise awarness about environment. LOCATION AND LEISURE: Cologne is a village of 7000 inhabitants in the middle of Franciacorta district, 25 km from Brescia. Mount Orfano is the green lung of the area about 4,8 square km and reach 450 mt heigh. Franciacorta is famous all over the world for his wine, his landscapes and historical buolding like Convento dell'Annunciata, a historical buolding on the top of Mount Orfano. WORK: The work consists in taking care, cleaning and restore signage Mount Orfano's trails. Removing garbage will be the main activity, Legambiente will provide all the stuff you need, we will provide also transport and information. ACCOMMODATION AND FOOD: Volunteers will be hosted in Villa Gnecchi an historical building of 16 century totally restored in city center with huge park. Self-managed kitchen. No internet All facilities are close to the house TERMINAL: From Bergamo Airport you go to the Bergamo train Station, then you take the train to Brescia and you stop in Cologne. It takes 35 min and it costs 3,30 euros. Last train leaves at 21,14 From Verona Airport you go to the Verona Trai Station, you take the train to Brescia. In Brescia you have to get off and change, you will have to take a train to Bergamo and stop in Cologne. It costs 3,60 euros, last train is at 21,00 From Milan airports (Malpensa or Linate) you go to Milan Train station, then you take the train to Verona Porta Nuova and you stop at Rovato. From Rovato you take the train to Bergamo and you stop in Cologne.

Here you can see lots of charming buildings dating back to the early 20th century, the golden era for Brunate’s tourism, like Villa Pirotta (Federico Frigerio, 1902) or the fountain called “Tre Fontane” with a Campari advertising bas-relief of the 30es. Turn left to follow via Nidrino, and pass by the Chalet Sonzogno (1902). Do not follow via Monte Rosa but instead walk down to the sportscentre. At the end of the football pitch follow the track on the right marked as “Strada Regia.” The trail slowly works its way down to the Monti di Blevio . Ignore the “Strada Regia” which leads to Capovico but continue straight along the flat path until you reach Monti di Sorto .

GHIA Spring 2010 A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for a baccalaureate degree in Journalism with honors in Journalism Reviewed and approved by Russell Frank Associate Professor Honors Adviser Thesis Supervisor Russ Eshleman Senior Lecturer Second Faculty Reader ABSTRACT At the beginning of the 2000s, three factories in Asti, a small Italian town, went broke and closed in quick succession. Hundreds of men were laid off. After some time, an investigation mounted by local prosecutors began to reveal what led to bankruptcy. A group of Italian and Spanish entrepreneurs organized a scheme to fraudulently bankrupt their own factories. Globalization made production more profitable where manpower and machinery are cheaper. A well-planned fraudulent bankruptcy would kill three birds with one stone: disposing of non- competitive facilities, fleecing creditors and sidestepping Italian labor laws. These managers hired a former labor union leader, Silvano Sordi, who is also a notorious “fixer.” According to the prosecutors, Sordi bribed prominent labor union leaders of the CGIL (Italian General Confederation of Labor), the major Italian labor union. My investigation shows that smaller, local scandals were part of a larger scheme that led to the divestments of relevant sectors of the Italian industry. Sordi also played a key role in many shady businesses – varying from awarding bogus university degrees to toxic waste trafficking. My research unveils an expanded, loose network that highlights the multiple connections between political, economic and criminal forces in the Italian system.
