GOALS/ACCOMPLISHMENTS CURRENT YEAR A. Instruction and Student Success 1. Teaching Initiatives, and Innovation Adnan Akyüz participated in the peer review of teaching workshop in summative evaluation. The purpose of this workshop was to assign a peer evaluator who works with him throughout the semester and attends his classes to evaluate his teaching methodologies in order to improve student learning. In addition, the peer evaluator wrote a formal evaluation to be used in his promotion and tenure portfolio. Adnan developed a website where students enter daily meteorological variables as a part of the required activity for the class. The students taking the course had to purchase a sling psychrometer to measure air temperature and wet bulb temperature. Using formulas, they had to calculate relative humidity and dew point temperature. This way the students exercised the fundamentals of meteorology and climatology observations. Mark Boetel developed and coordinated a graduate-level 1-credit course in Biological Control (insects). Frank Casey was on developmental leave in spring 2010 and his graduate student, Xuelian Bai, taught his Soil 480/680 – Soil and Waste Disposal course. He provided Xuelian with all his lecture notes and visuals and advised and provided her with guidance on a weekly basis via Skype. Dr. Tom DeSutter helped teach the graduate portion of the course by directing and overseeing the graduate projects. Frank taught a one-week short course on Soil-Water Relationships and Basic Soil Physics to researchers and graduate students at the Teagasc Research Centre at Johnstown Castle, Wexford Ireland. Frank is working on developing a laboratory manual for Soil Physics. During his developmental leave he worked on several exercises for soil physics. He is hoping to be able to publish the exercises for soil physics courses throughout English-speaking countries. Larry Cihacek revised and placed class materials into PowerPoint presentations for SOIL 782 – Advanced Soil Fertility. New equipment was purchased for the SOIL 210-Introduction to Soil Science lab sessions, which allowed for improvement of the lab on soil water. Students now measure water contents of soil by three methods (TDR, tensiometer, and gypsum block). The funds from the College to buy this equipment were greatly appreciated. A lab on comparative effects of N and P deficiency on wheat was also developed. Complete documentation of the set-up of every lab, including every student station, was accomplished. This was done so that the content of our labs can be offered to other colleges in the NDUS who offer Soil 210, and to provide a complete documentation of the labs should someone else be assigned to teach the labs in the future. 3 Stephen Foster canvassed Entomology faculty and some graduate students concerning a new course on chemical ecology starting Fall 2011. After discussion he decided to proceed with a temporary 400/600 two-credit course titled “Chemical Ecology of Insects” taught fall each in even-numbered years. Depending upon its initial success, the course may be expanded to a 3- credit course titled “Chemical Ecology” Amy Ganguli conducted a major revision of RNG 336 Introduction to Range Management. A new textbook and supplemental readings were used, new material was added, the range plant identification portion of this course was re-designed, and new forms of assessment were utilized (via. blackboard). She also revised RNG 458/658 Grazing Ecology. New readings and new material were introduced, new assignments were created, and students participated in a group project, which involved developing a management plan for the NDSU sheep facility. Graduate students in David Hopkins’ Soils 644 – Soil Genesis and Survey class were given a choice of a preparing a standard term paper/lecture or a field-based learning project. Several students favored a field-based approach. The class decided to focus on the Nahon series, a widely distributed sodium-affected soil in eastern North Dakota, but one lacking detailed characterization data. Conversations with landowners that farmed the Nahon soil were held in September to locate parcels of these soils proximate to Fargo. A producer near Wheatland gave his permission for students to investigate the morphologic and soil chemical properties of a Nahon delineation, and mentioned that he was considering installing tile drainage. The students were able to investigate and sample soils in the field, which complimented the laboratory field experiences they gained during the formal lab period. In addition, students made GIS maps illustrating pedon sampling sites as well as portraying results of Veris salinity surveys which were conducted in October. All of the graduate students participated in Veris work and calibration sampling. Local experts dealing with drainage were identified on and off campus so that students could assess how soil chemistry patterns were being addressed prior to the installation of tile. Laboratory work was also performed to measure salinity trends

    SECTION 9 SUNFLOWER (HELIANTHUS ANNUUS L.) 1. Taxonomy of the Genus Helianthus, Natural Habitat and Origins of the Cultivated Sunflower A. Taxonomy of the genus Helianthus The sunflower belongs to the genus Helianthus in the Composite family (Asterales order), which includes species with very diverse morphologies (herbs, shrubs, lianas, etc.). The genus Helianthus belongs to the Heliantheae tribe. This includes approximately 50 species originating in North and Central America. The basis for the botanical classification of the genus Helianthus was proposed by Heiser et al. (1969) and refined subsequently using new phenological, cladistic and biosystematic methods, (Robinson, 1979; Anashchenko, 1974, 1979; Schilling and Heiser, 1981) or molecular markers (Sossey-Alaoui et al., 1998). This approach splits Helianthus into four sections: Helianthus, Agrestes, Ciliares and Atrorubens. This classification is set out in Table 1.18. Section Helianthus This section comprises 12 species, including H. annuus, the cultivated sunflower. These species, which are diploid (2n = 34), are interfertile and annual in almost all cases. For the majority, the natural distribution is central and western North America. They are generally well adapted to dry or even arid areas and sandy soils. The widespread H. annuus L. species includes (Heiser et al., 1969) plants cultivated for seed or fodder referred to as H. annuus var. macrocarpus (D.C), or cultivated for ornament (H. annuus subsp. annuus), and uncultivated wild and weedy plants (H. annuus subsp. lenticularis, H. annuus subsp. Texanus, etc.). Leaves of these species are usually alternate, ovoid and with a long petiole. Flower heads, or capitula, consist of tubular and ligulate florets, which may be deep purple, red or yellow.

Voegtlin FORUT REJEARCH LABORATORY SCHOOL OF FORESTRY OREGON STATE UNIVERSITY Since 1941, the Forest Research Laboratory--part of the School of Forestry at Oregon State University in Corvallis-- has been studying forests and why they are like they are. A staff or more than 50 scientists conducts research to provide information for wise public and private decisions on managing and using Oregons forest resources and operating its wood-using industries. Because of this research, Oregons forests now yield more in the way of wood products, water, forage, wildlife, and recreation. Wood products are harvested, processed, and used more efficiently. Employment, productivity, and profitability in industries dependent on forests also have been strengthened. And this research has helped Oregon to maintain a quality environment for its people. Much research is done in the Laboratorys facilities on the campus. But field experiments in forest genetics, young- growth management, forest hydrology, harvesting methods, and reforestation are conducted on 12,000 acres of School forests adjacent to the campus and on lands of public and private cooperating agencies throughout the Pacific Northwest. With these publications, the Forest Research Laboratory supplies the results of its research to forest land owners and managers, to manufacturers and users of forest products, to leaders of government and industry, and to the general public. Because sunflowers are Cnative, associated insects have coevolved with the plants for centuries. When sunflowers were altered from a wild to a cultivated state, the changes had an impact on the insects associated with sunflowers in their native home. Plant architecture, growth phenology and plant community were altered when sunflowers were changed from wild to cultivated. For plant architecture, sunflowers changed from multiple to a single head, from branched to a single stem and from small to large seeds. The growth phenology also changed from variable emergence and extended periods of flowering in the wild type sunflower to discrete emergence and a short flowering period in cultivated sunflower. The plant community changed from small patches of mixed species of wild sunflowers to large acreage of a monoculture of cultivated sunflowers. A number of insects made the transition from the wild plant type to the cultivated plant to feed and develop. Some of these species affect the producers’ ability to increase seed production and thus have become economic pests. In the major sunflower-producing areas of the Dakotas, Minnesota and Manitoba, approximately 15 species of insects can cause plant injury and economic loss to sunflowers, depending on the severity of infestation.

Information was saught on the distribution of each species and their hosts. Tephritidae occur in all biogeographic regions except in extreme desert and polar areas, where their hosts are scarce or absent. Non- European Tephritidae are listed in 2000/29 EC as Annex 1/A1 pests whose introduction into the EU is prohibited. Non-EU Tephritidae are regularly intercepted in the EU. Interceptions mainly occur on fruits although there is potential for entry on other plant parts. Beginning with over 5,000 recognised species, factors relevant for pest categorisation were sequentially used to narrow down the list of species to create a list of Tephritidae not known to be established in the EU yet which occur in countries with some EU climate types and which feed on plants that occur in the EU.

  • Field Scouting Protocols for Sunflower Pests, 2010
    Field Scouting Protocols for Sunflower Pests, 2010 Goals: There are two major goals for these protocols: To get a good sense of which insect pests are present in sunflower fields across Vermont, of when their life stages occur, and of their typical populations. To gain an understanding of where economic thresholds lie for significant pests, and establish a rough idea of the pests’ life history and potential populations based on our observations. Procedure: The following procedures for monitoring adult populations of Sunflower Receptacle Maggot (Gymnocarena diffusa), Sunflower Stem Maggot (Strauzia longipennis), and Sunflower Seed Maggot (Neotephritis finalis) will be used at State Line Farm in North Bennington and at the Scott farm in Newbury; field arrangement at the Borderview Farm doesn’t allow use of the same technique. Set Up: Select two random locations in the field, at least 75 feet (23m) from the field edge. For each location, hang five ammonium-baited yellow sticky traps on wire hangers in an X pattern, with each corner spaced from the others 35 meters (115 ft.), and the middle card placed where the diagonals cross. It is important to get the traps into the field as soon after planting as is feasible, no later than June 1. Data Collection – Adults: Every other week (preferably on the same day) for eighteen weeks (9 sampling dates), collect traps, wrap them in Saran wrap, and identify Sampling area layout and count the insects of each species. Be sure to mark the date, the trap number, the species collected, and the number of each species. This is most important for the three sunflower maggot species that we’re concerned with, but identifying the others on the trap will be helpful when possible.

    Importation, from Mexico into the United States, of Potato, Solanum tuberosum, Tubers Intended for Consumption A Pathway-initiated Commodity Risk Assessment April 2011 Agency contact: Plant Epidemiology and Risk Analysis Laboratory Center for Plant Health Science and Technology United States Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service Plant Protection and Quarantine 1730 Varsity Drive, Suite 300 Raleigh, North Carolina 27606 Pest Risk Assessment for Ware Potato, Solanum tuberosum, from Mexico Executive Summary In this document we present results of an assessment of the risks associated with the importation, from Mexico into the United States (the 50 states and Caribbean territories), of ware potatoes (i.e., potatoes for consumption only), Solanum tuberosum L. A search of available sources of information and APHIS, PPQ port interception records identified eight quarantine pests of S. tuberosum that occur in Mexico and could be introduced into the United States in consignments of that commodity. Consequences of Introduction were estimated by assessing five elements that reflect the biology and ecology of the pests: climate/host interaction, host range, dispersal potential, economic impact, and environmental impact, resulting in the calculation of a risk value. Likelihood of Introduction was estimated by considering both the quantity of the commodity to be imported annually and the potential for pest introduction, resulting in the calculation of a second risk value. The two values were summed to estimate an overall Pest Risk Potential, which is an estimation of risk in the absence of mitigation. Quarantine pests considered likely to follow the import pathway are presented in the following table, indicating their risk ratings.
