Pioneers traveling along the Oregon Trail from western Nebraska, through Wyoming and southern Idaho and into eastern Oregon, referred to their travel as an 800 mile journey through a sea of sagebrush, mainly big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata). Today approximately 50 percent of the sagebrush sea has given way to agriculture, cities and towns, and other human developments. What remains is further fragmented by range management practices, creep- ing expansion of woodlands, alien weed species, and the historic view that big sagebrush is a worthless plant. Two ideas are promoted in this report: (1) big sagebrush is a nursing mother to a host of organisms that range from microscopic fungi to large mammals, and (2) many range management practices applied to big sagebrush ecosystems are not science based.     Molecular investigation of the origin of Castilleja crista-galli by Sarah Youngberg Mathews A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in Biological Sciences Montana State University © Copyright by Sarah Youngberg Mathews (1990) Abstract: An hypothesis of hybrid origin of Castilleja crista-galli (Scrophulariaceae) was studied. Hybridization and polyploidy are widespread in Castilleja and are often invoked as a cause of difficulty in defining species and as a speciation model. The putative allopolyploid origin of Castilleja crista-gralli from Castilleja miniata and Castilleja linariifolia was investigated using molecular, morphological and cytological techniques. Restriction site analysis of chloroplast DNA revealed high homogeneity among the chloroplast genomes of species of Castilleja and two Orthocarpus. No species of Castilleia represented by more than one population in the analysis was characterized by a distinctive choroplast genome. Genetic distances estimated from restriction site mutations between any two species or between genera are comparable to distances reported from other plant groups, but both intraspecific and intrapopulational distances are high relative to other groups. Restriction site analysis of nuclear ribosomal DNA revealed variable repeat types both within and among individuals. Qualitative species groupings based on restriction site mutations in the ribosomal DNA repeat units do not place Castilleja crista-galli with either putative parent in a consistent manner. A cladistic analysis of 11 taxa using 10 morphological characters places Castilleja crista-galli in an unresolved polytomy with both putative parents and Castilleja hispida. Cytological analyses indicate that Castilleja crista-gralli is not of simple allopolyploid origin. Both diploid and tetraploid chromosome counts are reported for this species, previously known only as an octoploid.

    Department of Fish and Game Biogeographic Data Branch The Vegetation Classification and Mapping Program List of California Terrestrial Natural Communities Recognized by The California Natural Diversity Database September 2003 Edition Introduction: This document supersedes all other lists of terrestrial natural communities developed by the Natural Diversity Database (CNDDB). It is based on the classification put forth in “A Manual of California Vegetation” (Sawyer and Keeler-Wolf 1995 and upcoming new edition). However, it is structured to be compatible with previous CNDDB lists (e.g., Holland 1986). For those familiar with the Holland numerical coding system you will see a general similarity in the upper levels of the hierarchy. You will also see a greater detail at the lower levels of the hierarchy. The numbering system has been modified to incorporate this richer detail. Decimal points have been added to separate major groupings and two additional digits have been added to encompass the finest hierarchal detail. One of the objectives of the Manual of California Vegetation (MCV) was to apply a uniform hierarchical structure to the State’s vegetation types. Quantifiable classification rules were established to define the major floristic groups, called alliances and associations in the National Vegetation Classification (Grossman et al. 1998). In this document, the alliance level is denoted in the center triplet of the coding system and the associations in the right hand pair of numbers to the left of the final decimal. The numbers of the alliance in the center triplet attempt to denote relationships in floristic similarity. For example, the Chamise-Eastwood Manzanita alliance (37.106.00) is more closely related to the Chamise- Cupleaf Ceanothus alliance (37.105.00) than it is to the Chaparral Whitethorn alliance (37.205.00).

    APPENDIXF THREATENED AND ENDANGERED SPECIES CORRESPONDENCE INTRODUCTION Forest Service policy regarding Biological Evaluaitons is summarized in Forest Service Manual (FSM) 2672.4. The intent of the Bilogical Evaluation process is to assess the potential impacts of propsed management activities, and ensure that such activities will not jeopardize the continued existence of: 1. Species listed, or proposed to be listed, as Engangered or Threatened by the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service and 2. Species designated as sensitive by the Regional Forester. AFFECTED ENVIRONMENT Project Area The Sioux Ranger District proposes to update allotment management plans for 11 domestic livestock allotments on National Forest System lands in the North and South Cave Hills and East Short Pine land units. The decision associated with this proposal and analysis wi" determine where livestock can graze, when grazing wi" occur and what specific guidelines will be established to regulate the intensity (timing and duration) of grazing. The analysis area includes about 17,700 National Forest acres. The climate is continental and semi-arid, with large seasonal and daily temperature variations being common. Most of the rainfall during the summer is from thunderstorms; flash flooding can occur form the more severe thunderstorms. Streamflow is erratic with most streams being intermittant in nature. Ecological units include hardwood draws, Ponderosa bench and slope, upland, rolling, and table top grassland, rockland, and rimrocks. Detailed information regarding plant community composition and location is found elsewhere in the environmental analysis for this proposed action. Field surveys have been conducted within or adjacent to the project area by Linda Spencer, Kim Reid, Jeff DiBenedetto, and Tim McGarvey during the 2001 field season (s).

Tridentatae . In particular, second-step lectotypifications are proposed for the names Artemisia trifida Nutt., nom. illeg. (A. tripartita Rydb., the currently accepted replacement name), A. fischeriana Besser (= A. californica Lessing, the currently accepted name), and A. pedatifida Nutt. For several nomenclatural types of names listed in earlier publications as "holotypes," the type designations are corrected to lectotypes (Art. 9.9. of ICN ). Newly discovered authentic specimens (mostly isolectotypes) of several names in the group are listed and discussed, mainly based on specimens deposited in the Besser and Turczaninov memorial herbaria at the National Herbarium of Ukraine (KW). The Turczaninov herbarium is particularly rich in Nuttall's specimens, which are often better represented and better preserved than corresponding specimens available from BM, GH, K, PH, and some other major herbaria.

Executive Summary This survey was a continuation of several years of rare plant survey on San Juan Public Lands. Funding for the project was provided by San Juan National Forest and the San Juan Resource Area of the Bureau of Land Management. Previous rare plant surveys on San Juan Public Lands by CNHP were conducted in conjunction with county wide surveys of La Plata, Archuleta, San Juan and San Miguel counties, with partial funding from Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO); and in 2004, public lands only in Dolores and Montezuma counties, funded entirely by the San Juan Public Lands. Funding for 2005 was again provided by San Juan Public Lands. The primary emphases for field work in 2005 were: 1. revisit and update information on rare plant occurrences of agency sensitive species in the Colorado Natural Heritage Program (CNHP) database that were last observed prior to 2000, in order to have the most current information available for informing the revision of the Resource Management Plan for the San Juan Public Lands (BLM and San Juan National Forest); 2.
