Sabree, Advisor Rachelle Adams Norman Johnson Laura Kubatko Copyrighted by Alejandro Otero-Bravo 2020 Abstract Nutritional symbioses between bacteria and insects are prevalent, diverse, and have allowed insects to expand their feeding strategies and niches. It has been well characterized that long-term insect-bacterial mutualisms cause genome reduction resulting in extremely small genomes, some even approaching sizes more similar to organelles than bacteria. While several symbioses have been described, each provides a limited view of a single or few stages of the process of reduction and the minority of these are of extracellular symbionts. This dissertation aims to address the knowledge gap in the genome evolution of extracellular insect symbionts using the stink bug – Pantoea system. Specifically, how do these symbionts genomes evolve and differ from their free- living or intracellular counterparts? In the introduction, we review the literature on extracellular symbionts of stink bugs and explore the characteristics of this system that make it valuable for the study of symbiosis. We find that stink bug symbiont genomes are very valuable for the study of genome evolution due not only to their biphasic lifestyle, but also to the degree of coevolution with their hosts. i In Chapter 1 we investigate one of the traits associated with genome reduction, high mutation rates, for Candidatus ‘Pantoea carbekii’ the symbiont of the economically important pest insect Halyomorpha halys, the brown marmorated stink bug, and evaluate its potential for elucidating host distribution, an analysis which has been successfully used with other intracellular symbionts. -

Abstract Four species of plant parasitic nematodes were present in soil samples planted with forage legumes at Alachua County, Florida, USA. The detected species Belonolaimus longicaudatus, Criconemella ornate, Hoplolaimus galeatus, and Paratrichodorus minor were described in the present study. They belong to orders Rhabditida (Belonolaimus longicaudatus, Criconemella ornate, and Hoplolaimus galeatus) and Triplonchida (Paratrichodorus minor) and to taxonomical families Dolichodoridae (Belonolaimus longicaudatus), Hoplolaimidae (Hoplolaimus galeatus) Criconematidae (Criconemella ornate), and Trichodoridae (Paratrichodorus minor). The identification of the present specimens was based on the classical taxonomy, following morphological and morphometrical characters in the species specific identification keys. Mainul HAQUE2 Department of Fruit Vegetables, National Institute of Vegetables and Tea Science (Ano, Mie 514–2392, Japan) Abstract Developmental rates of Aculops lycopersici increased linearly as rearing temperature increased. A total of 81.2 degree-days above a developmental zero of 10.5°C were required to complete develop- ment from egg to adult emergence. Adult longevity decreased with increasing temperature. The high- est intrinsic rate of natural increase was observed at 25°C as 0.253 per day. The population increased exponentially on greenhouse tomato plants and the intrinsic rate of natural increase was estimated to be 0.175 per day. A. lycopersici first reproduced on the released leaves then moved upward. The infesta- tion caused great injury to the plants, with a large number of leaves turning brown and then drying up. The number of leaves, the plant height and the diameter of the main stem of the plants all decreased. Homeopronematus anconai naturally occurred on tomato plants. After the rapid population increase of H. anconai, the A. lycopersici population decreased sharply. An adult H. anconai consumed an aver- age of 69.3 A. lycopersici deutonymphs per day in the laboratory. H. anconai was thought to be a pro- spective natural enemy of A. lycopersici. Insect Survey of Four Longleaf Pine Preserves
A SURVEY OF THE MOTHS, BUTTERFLIES, AND GRASSHOPPERS OF FOUR NATURE CONSERVANCY PRESERVES IN SOUTHEASTERN NORTH CAROLINA Stephen P. Hall and Dale F. Schweitzer November 15, 1993 ABSTRACT Moths, butterflies, and grasshoppers were surveyed within four longleaf pine preserves owned by the North Carolina Nature Conservancy during the growing season of 1991 and 1992. Over 7,000 specimens (either collected or seen in the field) were identified, representing 512 different species and 28 families. Forty-one of these we consider to be distinctive of the two fire- maintained communities principally under investigation, the longleaf pine savannas and flatwoods. An additional 14 species we consider distinctive of the pocosins that occur in close association with the savannas and flatwoods. Twenty nine species appear to be rare enough to be included on the list of elements monitored by the North Carolina Natural Heritage Program (eight others in this category have been reported from one of these sites, the Green Swamp, but were not observed in this study). Two of the moths collected, Spartiniphaga carterae and Agrotis buchholzi, are currently candidates for federal listing as Threatened or Endangered species. Another species, Hemipachnobia s. subporphyrea, appears to be endemic to North Carolina and should also be considered for federal candidate status. With few exceptions, even the species that seem to be most closely associated with savannas and flatwoods show few direct defenses against fire, the primary force responsible for maintaining these communities. Instead, the majority of these insects probably survive within this region due to their ability to rapidly re-colonize recently burned areas from small, well-dispersed refugia. -

Medler INTRODUCTION HIS bulletin attempts to present as accurate and complete a T guide to the leafhoppers of Minnesota as possible within the limits of the material available for study. It is realized that cer- tain groups could not be treated completely because of the lack of available material. Nevertheless, it is hoped that in its present form this treatise will serve as a convenient and useful manual for the systematic and economic worker concerned with the forms of the upper Mississippi Valley. In all cases a reference to the original description of the species and genus is given. Keys are included for the separation of species, genera, and supergeneric groups. In addition to the keys a brief diagnostic description of the important characters of each species is given. Extended descriptions or long lists of references have been omitted since citations to this literature are available from other sources if ac- tually needed (Van Duzee, 1917). -

In both years populations striped and spotted cucumber beetles and Pennsylvania leatherwings (only in 1995) increased Significantly and Diptera decreased significantly in the direction of the crop. The strength of these relationships increased over the season to a peak in August in 1995 and July in 1996 and then decreased in September in both years. There were significant correlations between Diptera and sweet-vernal grass in 1995. -

138 Proceedings, Hawaiian Entomological Society Biology and Control of Araecerus levipennis Jordan ( Coleoptera: Anthribidae )x Martin Sherman and Minoru Tamashiro2 UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII AGRICULTURAL EXPERIMENT STATION HONOLULU, HAWAII (Presented at the meeting of December 12, 1953) Koa haole, Leucaenaglauca (L.) Bentham, is a leguminous plant introduced into Hawaii prior to 1888 (Takahashi and Ripperton, 1949). Because of its high protein content, it is a valuable forage crop and many ranches have spread its seed over rangeland. In addition to this important use, it is of some value as a raw material in the manufacture of Hawaiian seed jewelry. During 1954 a small beetle, previously unknown in Hawaii, was found to be damaging a large percentage of the seed of koa haole (Ford and Chilson, 1955; Sherman, 1955). Specimens were sent to the U.S. National Museum and were identified as Araecerus sp., evidently simulatus Gyllenhal. However, additional specimens sent to Dr. H. E. Karl Jordan were identified by him as Araecerus levipennis Jordan. This species was described from the Philippines and Cochin China (Jordan, 1924). In a letter to Dr. D. Elmo Hardy of the University of Hawaii3 Dr. Jordan wrote, "It is a near relative of Araecerus simulatus Gyllenh. 1833 (Java), which is a species of very wide distribution in the Oriental Region and varying much in size and pattern. .. Araecerus levipennis differs from the four other species of Araecerus known from the Hawaiian Islands in the following combination of distinctions: club of antennae almost sym metrical; upper side pale tawny (ochraceous) with diffuse grey spots, im pressed stripes, and their punctures distinct only at sides and bases, absent dorsally from before middle to apex of elytra, which gives the elytra a smooth appearance; legs pale testaceous, tibia without dark markings; anterior tibia of o71 hairy on underside, without teeth; sutural area sometimes dark (as happens also in A. -

Besides providing basic biological knowledge, biosequence data for A. vittatum would be useful towards the development of molecular biopesticides to complement existing population control methods. However, no such datasets currently exist. In this study, three biological replicates apiece of male and female adult insects were sequenced and assembled into a set of 630,139 transcripts (of which 232,899 exhibited hits to one or more sequences in NCBI NR). Quantitative analyses identified 2898 genes differentially expressed across the male–female divide, and qualitative analyses characterized the insect’s resistome, comprising the glutathione S-transferase, carboxylesterase, and cytochrome P450 monooxygenase families of xenobiotic detoxification genes. In summary, these data provide useful insights into genes associated with sex differentiation and this beetle’s innate genetic capacity to develop resistance to synthetic pesticides; furthermore, these genes may serve as useful targets for potential use in molecular-based biocontrol technologies.
