In the midst of all this activity we received a two-day inspection visit from Ofsted at the start of November, our first since January 2010.

We were delighted by the overwhelming report of outstanding teaching from the Ofsted team which was thoroughly heartening, and a testament to the teaching staff, established and new, who are so committed to the students at Christleton.

The team commented on the unquenchable thirst for knowledge of our students and deservedly complimented them in many other ways. The overall inspection Winter Term 2014 5

Physicists in a Spin!

In October this year, 13 Physicists took the annual pilgrimage to Alton Towers to investigate the Physics of Fairground Rides and support their learning of this key A2 topic. The damp weather and illness did not hamper their ability to make extensive use of the quiet theme park. Their accelerometer apps were put to full use on Air, Enterprise, Rita, Sonic Spinball, Nemesis and the Carousel: Callum Griffiths then used the data to produce acceleration-time graphs for each of the rides:

Previously they had engaged in a significant amount of group work with several K’nex rollercoaster kits to build a fully working model rollercoaster - one of the largest our students have built yet. Many of the group are planning on becoming engineers and the rollercoaster building exercise certainly tested their scientific knowledge, creativity, team working, problem solving and communication skills to the limit. Their enthusiasm was tangible as they spent every spare minute in the lab perfecting their rollercoaster for over a week. Winter Term 2014 9

Year 11 Students & Parents Sixth Form Open Evening

Thursday 15th January 2015

All Year 11 students are invited to our Sixth Form Open Evening on Thursday 15th January 2015. The evening runs between 7.00p.m. and 9.00p.m.

The aim of the evening is for prospective students and their parents to find out what opportunities are available in one of the largest and most successful Sixth Forms in Cheshire.

With over 300 students on roll, we are able to provide variety and breadth, in a friendly and supportive environment. Students are given every encouragement to reach their full potential, both academically and socially. The majority of our sixth formers go on to Higher Education and then successful careers in a wide range of occupations.

Around 20% of our sixth formers join us from other local, national and international schools, which adds to the richness of their education and that of our own students.

All of the students really enjoyed it, it was amazing, I really enjoyed it and I would love to do all the quizzes and fun activities again if I had another opportuinity to go. As well as the fun events going on, you could have won some amazing prizes like Chocolate or a Golden Ticket. “Becoming The Best We Can Be” Christleton High School Governors’ Conference 2014

Students develop the employability skills of presenting to an audience and participating in mixed discussion groups

The purpose of the 2014 Governors’ Conference was to plan the strategic direction of the school for the next three years and beyond. The team of over thirty delegates, comprising teachers, support staff, governors, and a dozen students discussed a range of ideas, flowing three separate student presentations: -

University Summer School earlier this year. The one-day sessions were designed to give students a taste of university life in a particular subject area. Here’s what Dominika Sadczuk thought of the experience: -

“At the start of the summer a couple of my friends and I had the opportunity to go to Keele University for a Pharmacy- related day. We started the day off with a presentation about pharmacy and what you can do after you finish your degree in it, which in fact is pretty impressive. Later on we got the experience of testing some drugs on how dissolvable or brittle they were which felt like we really worked in the laboratory. Lastly we were introduced to a 3D tech human.

Normally lectures about anatomy and medicine are given and the 3D human is used for the students to be able to visualise the concept of the lesson. However, that day we experienced a lecture on headaches which was really interesting but at the same time slightly scary as it mentioned life threatening headaches, which got me a bit paranoid! All in all it was a very interesting day and I definitely leant a lot.”

Dove Self-Esteem Workshop for Year 8 and 9 Students

We were delighted to welcome a team of nearly forty representatives from Unilever earlier this term to work with all students in Year 8 and 9. Unilever are a big local employer, as well as being one of the world’s leading fast-moving consumer goods companies with products sold in over 190 countries. More than 2 billion consumers worldwide use a Unilever product on any given day.

The purpose of the workshop Unilever brands include: was to equip students with the tools they need to build and protect their self-esteem, thereby enabling them to realise their full potential.

The workshop covered: -

• Understanding what affects ‘self-esteem’ and ‘body confidence’ • Exploring how imagery may shape thoughts and feelings on body shape • Seeing the reality behind media imagery • Improving self-esteem skills

The Unilever Dove Self-Esteem Workshop Team Get Ready to Meet our Year 8 and 9 Students Winter Term 2014 49

Here’s what three of our Year 8 boys thought of the experience: - “I learned to be myself and not to try and be anyone else. They told us about how things like photos are Photoshopped to make them look better and the amount of make-up they put on for a video. They also said about how people on billboards have an unreal amount of make-up on.” Elliot Jones 8Ba1

One of the Unilever representatives was former student Josh Carew. Here is what Josh has been up to since in the five years since leaving the sixth form: -

“As a former pupil of Christleton High School, I went on to study chemistry at the University of Loughborough. This was a very challenging time for me for a number of personal reasons and things did not quite work out studying full time at university so I decided to go back home and make a fresh start. I applied for higher apprenticeships in the North-West and I was successful in my application for a Unilever Research and Development apprenticeship which brought me on to a four-year course with the company. I worked part time at the R&D lab in Port Sunlight whilst studying Chemistry part- time at Wirral Met College (one year) & the University of Liverpool (three years) where I achieved a distinction at HNC level and a 2:1 BSc degree. I have gained great experience and skills working in home and personal care categories and I am now permanently employed as a Process Engineer after finishing my apprenticeship. I remember my time at Christleton very fondly; it was a pleasure returning back recently with Unilever as part of the Dove self- esteem project and I feel very proud of my achievements... so far. It was great to see a lot of the teachers again and very nice that we are Former Sixth Form Student Josh Carew, now still remembered as former students”. a Unilever Process Engineer

Do you want to show of your strengths?

Well now you can!

Within art, you are able to show more diversity within your work and be more independent about how your work looks. Many students prefer this as their work is very individual compared to others in the class even though it is the same project.

Winning Ways for Christleton High School at the Chester and District Cross Country event

Christleton soared their way through the Chester and District Cross Country Championship, battling through the high winds and rain on Monday 20th and Tuesday 21st October 2014.

Amongst the ten schools who competed from across Cheshire West and Chester, Christleton were awarded team winners in the minor girls, junior girls, junior boys and intermediate boy’s events.

The minor girl’s event was won successfully by our very own Tamsin O’Keefe. Tamsin has exceptional running ability; her performance on the day was fantastic, holding the lead for the entire race.

The top 20 runners from each race will now go on to represent Cheshire County in the Cross Country event held in January 2015. Go Christleton! 64 Christleton High School Magazine

The U14’s Rugby Team Headed to Newcastle on Tour

This was the first school rugby tour and what a tour it was, 26 boys departed for Newcastle on the 23rd of October 2014 and spent three days playing, watching and being coached Rugby.

The boys played their first match on the first evening and after a long bus journey, they played exceptionally well. The rest of the tour was spent taking part in many activities from coaching sessions, surfing lessons, a walk along Hadrian’s Wall, watching a National league match, oh and more Rugby fixtures.

The boys were a dream and thoroughly enjoyed the tour, the hostel was well placed in the city and the boys had very little spare time in what was a jam packed tour. Mr Holmes in the Maths department was a great addition to the staffing and many students had lots of laughs and fun.

Well done to all who attended, it was a fantastic event.
