This liturgical calendar, together with these introductory notes, has been compiled in accordance with the Motu Proprio Rubricarum Instructum issued by Pope B John XXIII on 25th July 1960, the Roman Breviary of 1961 and the Roman Missal of 1962. For the universal calendar that to be found at the beginning of the Roman Breviary and Missal has been used. For the diocesan calendars no such straightforward procedure is possible. The decree of the Sacred Congregation of Rites of 26th July 1960 at paragraph (6) required all diocesan calendars to conform with the new rubrics and be approved by that Congregation. The diocesan calendars in use on 1st January 1961 (the date set for the new rubrics to come into force) were substantially those previously in use but with varying adjustments and presumably as yet to re-approved. Indeed those calendars in use immediately prior to that date were by no means identical to those previously approved by the Congregation, since there had been various changes to the rubrics made by Pope Pius XII. Hence it is not a simple matter to ascertain in complete and exact detail the classifications and dates of all diocesan feasts as they were, or should have been, observed at 1st January 1961. -

Due to Sidney’s aggressive advocacy of a pro-Protestant English foreign policy during the 1570s and 1580s, and to the anti-Catholic biases of many British and American academics in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, previous studies have almost unanimously approached Sidney from an exclusively Protestant angle. This Sidney is the hero of English Protestant nationalism, the perfect poet-knight. The Sidney that emerges from the present study is much less unified: thoroughly anti- papal and anti-Spanish in his politics but warmly Catholic in his apparent metaphysical convictions. Catholic theology and devotional traditions were far from dead in Sidney’s England, and he was far from hostile toward them. -

Erdington Abbey 1850-1876-2001 Michael Hodgetts Benedictine History Symposium 2001 ERDINGTON ABBEY, 1850-1876-2001 Michael Hodgetts From 1876 until 1922, the arch-abbey of Beuron in Württemberg had a daughter-house in England at Erdington, four and a half miles north-east of Birmingham. The parish is still universally known as ‘the Abbey’, although it has been served by Redemptorists since 1922 and the claustral buildings were sold to a local school in 1994. The church itself celebrated its one hundred and fiftieth anniversary on 11 June last year: it was built by a wealthy Tractarian convert, Daniel Henry Haigh, on whose retirement in 1876 it was taken over by the Benedictines from Beuron. My parents were married there in 1934, and I have known it since 1942. So I was delighted when Abbot Scott asked me to mark the anniversary by a contribution to this Symposium. Until the 19th century, Erdington was merely a hamlet in the huge medieval parish of Aston, which included all the countryside between Birmingham and Sutton Coldfield, seven miles to the north-east and for several miles to the east as well. There had been recusant gentry within three or four miles, but not in Erdington itself. About 1690 Andrew Bromwich established a Masshouse at (Old) Oscott, now known as Maryvale, three miles north-west, in Handsworth parish, which, like Erdington, is now a suburb of Birmingham. Even in 1767, however, only two Papists were reported in the whole of Aston parish, though in Sutton Coldfield there were thirty, and in Birmingham and Edg-baston, on the far side of it, there were well over three hundred. -

Shrewsbury: the Great West Window
SHREWSBURY: THE GREAT WEST WINDOW Margaret Rope’s first major commission, which she designed and painted at The Priory, her home in Shrewsbury (reputedly on the kitchen table!), was the Cathedral’s Great West Window. It commemorates Bishop Samuel Webster Allen, 4th Bishop of Shrewsbury, who died in 1908 aged 64, and was unveiled at High Mass on Sunday 27th February 1910 by his successor Bishop Hugh Singleton. According to the detailed account of the occasion in the Catholic journal The Tablet the Bishop ‘drew the cords of the veil and revealed the window through which the sunlight was streaming’1. Margaret was very self-effacing: according to her brother Father Henry Rope at the unveiling she ‘contrived to find a place hidden from view behind the organ’2. First a note about the window’s name. Because of the restricted size and shape of its site the Cathedral was built on a north-south axis instead of having the usual east-west orientation. For liturgical purposes, however, we regard the main altar as being at the east end of the building and this convention was adopted in naming this window, which is at the opposite end to the altar. Geographically speaking it should be the Great South Window! The unusual orientation has the advantage of allowing it to be appreciated in all its glory for much more of the day than it could be if it was really facing west and only catching the evening sun. The six main lights are a picture gallery of British martyrs from the Romans to the Reformation. -

HENRY VIII TRAIL The story of Henry’s visit with his allegedly adulterous Queen, Catherine Howard in 1541. The King sat nearly 2 weeks, ulcerous, syphilitic and constipated, fuming and waiting for his nephew James V of Scotland to attend a peace conference that never happened. Lavish preparations were made for the King’s reception by a City Council so terrified of the King after the Pilgrimage of Grace that they grovelled in the mud to meet him. Henry also closed down all the Monasteries and hospitals in York, even the public lavatories, because of alleged hanky-panky by the monks and nuns. St Leonards Hospital This was founded by King Athelstan in 935 AD as the Hospital of St Peter’s and may go back even further. It was refounded as the Hospital of St Leonard by King Stephen after the great fire of York in 1137. At its height the Hospital stretched almost the Minster-the Theatre Royal is built on its Undercrofts and the Red House incorporates part of its gatehouse. The Time Team Excavation of 1999 and At its height it had over 200 people in its care ranging from the poor to those who chose to retire there to live out their days. It had 13 Augustinian Canons, 8 Nuns plus Lay Brothers and servants making perhaps 300 people in all. It was surrendered to the Crown in 1539 and all had to leave. It was the last of the great religious house in York to close on 1st Dec 1540. The last Master, Thomas Magnus, got a manor at Beningbrough Grange. -

An introduction to My Voice #2 My Voice #2 is the second Birmingham Adult Education Service (BAES) writing event for learners enrolled in our English courses. The main aim of My Voice #2 is to encourage free-writing and creativity in our English courses through the sharing of stories and poems, to give our learners an authentic opportunity to have a voice, talk about things that matter to them and share these thoughts and feelings with a much wider audience. Equally, we feel it’s important to recognise and celebrate the high level of work learners are producing, with support and guidance from our exceptional team of English tutors. Again, the brief for this writing was simple; to write poems and short stories that may be fictional or based on real and lasting experiences from the learners’ everyday lives. The results have been encouragingly positive. All of these articles are unique, many are compelling, some are thought- provoking and others tell inspiring tales of overcoming adversity. Overall, I feel this book represents and celebrates the great diversity of our learners in Birmingham and I am extremely proud to have taken part in this publication. I hope you enjoy reading it! 1 2 8 9 10 ST JAMES’ WAY READING FROM READING TO Reading for SOUTHAMPTON Modern Pilgrims THATCHAM St James’ Way and The Camino Inglés BASINGSTOKE WINCHESTER 3 4 5 11 11 SOUTHAMPTON PORTSMOUTH From Reading to Santiago via the 6 7 12 13 St James’ Way and The Camino Inglés The English Way (Camino Inglés in Spanish) was the most popular route for pilgrims heading to Santiago de Compostela from England during the 12th to the 15th centuries. After leaving Reading, travellers would sail to Galicia in north-west Spain from English ports such as Southampton and Plymouth and from the Galician coast continue on foot to Santiago in order to visit the shrine of the Apostle Saint James. Reading, whose grand Abbey was the centre of the St James’ cult in England, would have played a crucial role in the pilgrimage to Santiago, with pilgrims Reading and Caversham 7 De Montfort Island – Now known as Fry’s Island, a trial by combat was visiting, to then continue towards Southampton, along what we know today held on the island in 1163, witnessed by King Henry II, between Robert as St James´ Way. de Montfort and Henry of Essex. Essex, believed dead, was taken to Pilgrimage Sites For modern-day pilgrims and walkers, the St James’ Way is a 68.5 mile mostly Reading Abbey where he recovered and became a monk. The island now flat route that, after starting in Reading, follows rivers and canals through 1 St James’ Church – Reading’s C19th Roman Catholic church, dedicated houses a boatyard and a bowling club, both accessed by boat from the beautiful parts of the country as well as historic sites in Bramley, Upper Wield, to St James, was built by AW Pugin in the Abbey Precinct, near the north south bank.
