Indonesian Historiography in the New Order (274 pp.) Director of Thesis: William H. Frederick This thesis discusses one central problem: What happened to Indonesian historiography in the New Order (1966-98)? To analyze the problem, the author studies the connections between the major themes in his intellectual autobiography and those in the metahistory of the regime. Proceeding in chronological and thematic manner, the thesis comes in three parts. Part One presents the author’s intellectual autobiography, which illustrates how, as a member of the generation of people who grew up in the New Order, he came into contact with history. Part Two examines the genealogy of and the major issues at stake in the post-New Order controversy over the rectification of history. Part Three ends with several concluding observations. First, the historiographical engineering that the New Order committed was not effective. Second, the regime created the tools for people to criticize itself, which shows that it misunderstood its own society. Third, Indonesian contemporary culture is such that people abhor the idea that there is no single truth.

Historical method was used in this research. The historical method is distinguished into several stages, namely heuristic, critic, analysis, and historiography. Indonesia’s political figures established Radicale Concentratie to unite in order to achieve independence. Radicale Concentratie put a great pressure on the Dutch East Indies government. Radicale Concentratie no longer operated because of some conflicts that occurred among its members and the arrests done by the Dutch East Indies government. Radicale Concentratie’s struggle was continued by National Fraction which was established on 27 January 1930. The proposition of National Fraction that was fulfilled was the change in the nomenclatur of Indlander to Indonesisch. National Fraction often turned down the budget plan proposed by the Governor-General in preparing for the Second World War. This is because the Dutch East Indies fleet was funded by Indonesian taxes and the taxes were planned to be increased in order to win the war. Between the Village and the City: Representing Colonial Indonesia in the Films of Saeroen Christopher Woodrich [email protected] Abstract: Following the Great Depression, colonial Indonesia was in a flux. The economic shift from a rural agrarian to an urban manufacturing economic base led to increasingly rapid urbanization and the accompanying societal woes. This shift in societal make-up influenced various forms of popular culture, which writers and other creative professionals used to express their opinions – both positive and negative – of the cultural shift. The reporter turned screenwriter Saeroen, a keen social observer who wrote under the name Kampret and was several times arrested for his writings, was no exception. Attached to four film production houses in his four-year screenwriting career (1937–41), Saeroen’s oeuvre included some of the biggest commercial successes of the period and often involved migration from the villages to the cities. Though the majority of Saeroen’s films are now thought lost, enough evidence survives in the form of film reviews, novelizations, and promotional material for a textual analysis of his works and the views contained within. As will be shown, Saeroen’s works, including Terang Boelan, Sorga Ka Toedjoe, Asmara Moerni, and Ajah Berdosa, represent a testament to the experience of abandoning the villages and embracing the cities.
