Council of Fashion Designers of America ANNUAL REPORT 2017 The mission of the Council of Fashion Designers of America is to strengthen the impact of American fashion in the global economy. B 1 Letter from the Chairwoman, Diane von Furstenberg, and the President and Chief Executive Officer, Steven Kolb In fashion, we respond to the world we live in, a point that was powerfully driven home in 2017. We were excited to see talents with broad cultural backgrounds and political ideas begin to express their experiences and beliefs through their collections. Diversity moved into the spotlight in ways we have never seen before. Designers embraced new approaches to business, from varying show formats to disruptive delivery cycles. It was also the year to make your voices heard, and CFDA listened. We engaged in civic initiatives important to our industry and partnered with Planned Parenthood, the ACLU, and FWD.us. We also relaunched our CFDA Health Initiative with guidelines to help those impacted by sexual assault or other forms of abuse. There’s no going back. In 2018, CFDA is moving ahead at full speed with an increased focus on inclusivity and women in fashion, the latter through an exciting new study with Glamour magazine. We may be a reflection of the world we live in, but we also work hard to make that world a better place. A CONTENT ANALYSIS OF ADVERTISER INFLUENCE ON EDITORIAL CONTENT IN FASHION MAGAZINES by CANDACE CAMILLE WALTON (Under the Direction of Jose F. Blanco) ABSTRACT The purpose of this exploratory research is to address and analyze the amount of influence that advertisers have over editorial content in the media, specifically men‟s and women‟s fashion magazines. The sample consisted of a total of sixteen fashion magazines, with four different magazine titles (two targeted towards women and two targeted towards men) representing two different publishers. A survey was also conducted with a member of the editorial staff of one of the publications in the sample. Descriptive statistics (percentages) and SPSS correlation tests were used to test relationships among the variables and answer the research questions. The results yielded percentages that pointed towards editorial independence from advertisers, however, significant correlation was found between advertisers and editorial content as well. • Marylou Luther: the Angel Wears Prada Too
Marylou Luther: The Angel Wears Prada Too By: Kanika Chadda-Gupta This is by far the most poignant fashion piece I’ve ever written. It’s about another fashion writer…a legend…a woman who so seamlessly wove herself into the fabrics of my life and became my mentor. We met in 2009 at Lakmé Fashion Week in Mumbai, India, and when we got to chatting, we discovered we both have ties to CNN (I was Chief Fashion Correspondent for the CNN affiliate in India; her son Walter has been an acclaimed video journalist for the bureau in New York for the past 30 years), have a penchant for Parisian cuisine, prefer our coffee with a spoonful of vanilla ice cream, and are members of the Gamma Phi Beta sorority. Long lost sorority sisters (nearly sixty years apart) meeting for the first time in India? We think there’s only one word to describe it – “serendipity.” I am so thankful to have my 89-year-old gal pal and soul sister in my life. Cheers to you, Marylou! Fashion writer Marylou Luther When non-fashion folk palaver about the fraternity finding fodder in The Devil Wears Prada and The September Issue, Vogue’s reining queen Anna Wintour is quick to come to mind as one of the most influential fashion writers ever. Yet only those rooted in the firmament know of and revere Marylou Luther who’s spent 60 years in the business and was at the forefront long before Anna’s time. At age 26, during an era when most young women opted for a domestic life over professional pursuits, Marylou had a reserved front row seat at coveted runway shows in New York, Paris, London, and Rome (Milan was not yet on the scene).

By the time the clothes were runway’d, uncertainties had turned to downturn and the “r” word was in the news. Talk centered on the mortgage crisis, foreclosures, business failures, stock market convulsions. Judging by the clothes they produced, designers have incredible prognostic powers. As if they anticipated the mournful state of the economy, designers in all major fashion capitals chose the color of darkness as the number one color of the season.
