Arnau is a conscientious 17 year-old. His mother is in prison but he doesn’t entirely understand why, he only dreams of getting her out to see summer and the sea. For this, he’s going to need a good lawyer, which means money, something Arnau doesn’t have, nor does his sister, brother or his uncle. While hoping to earn enough in the meantime at the brasserie where he works, Arnau dedicates himself to his true passion: songbird competitions. Arnau has trained several birds and they could be considered his only friends. He also has a fox, which he rescued after finding it dying in the river. With these companions, Arnau feels prepared to face all that life can throw at him. Especially when his favourite bird becomes the champion of Catalonia. The sky is blue, the trees have not yet been eaten up by the encroaching sprawl of the town and every day is full of promise. When his uncle informs him that it’s also possible to win a lot of money dog racing, Arnau sees another opportunity to release his mother. But a dark night will teach him that miracles don’t grow on trees and Arnau will be forced to confront a terrible reality.

Rosario Francesc es una escritora ama de casa, de vida completamente convencional que visita al psicoterapeuta porque tiene episodios de pánico nocturno. Rosario Francesc is a writing housewife, living a completely conventional life, who visits the psychotherapist because of her panic episodes at night. In a few sessions the psychotherapist confronts her with her own acceptance as a writer. She should risk the opinion of others, show her work to the people of her environment and have a go at publishing companies. Rosario does so, but on the way there come up questions like fears, feelings of guilt and the discovery of sexual expression in her relationship with persons outside the marriage. Her stories reflect, in some way, all this, they explore the world around her beyond her little problems and come along with Rosario’s own story. A little story about the ungraciousness of a waiter towards an alcoholic beggar, a lecher that wants to trick a young singer, an intruder that plants herself in a wedding where she wasn’t invited, the granddaughter of a man who shot his neighbours during the civil war and his hard mission of expiation, a painter who gets a strange order, these are Rosario’s stories, that finally start their journey into the world with a publishing company, though this won’t be the key for the solution of her problems.

Benjamín Chaparro has just retired after working all his life as an employee at a Criminal Court. To fill his free time, he decides to write a novel based on a real story he witnessed and played a leading role in. The novel he is writing seems to be the story of a 1973 murder in Buenos Aires and the investigation to find the perpetrator. But once he has opened the doors to the past, Chaparro finds it impossible to close them again. That is because the turbulent Argentina of those times infiltrates the lives of his characters with its weight of violence and death. And most of all, because although Chaparro believes that the story he is weaving is only about the past, his search sheds a harsh light on his own life in present day, forcing him to face a dilemma related to love which has been an obsession for too long. Reconstructing the past will lead him to delve into his own feelings, behaviour and decisions. And finding the truth will turn out to be not a literary goal but the key enabling him to open the door to live the rest of his life.

Por fortuna siempre hay alguna joya, este es Alberto, el inmigrante. Ese día en concreto, Juantxo no puede soportar por más tiempo la peste que hay en la cocina. Alguien ha dejado pudrir comida en algún lugar y no se puede soportar la peste. Hay que hacer una limpieza profunda. Las quejas de los alumnos serán en vano. Al final Piras siguiendo el olor descubrirá que viene del techo...

The action starts off at a cookery school. Here we find this year’s six students crying inconsolably (but because of the chopped onion). These future cooks are: Alberto (a Bolivian immigrant who looks like a South American Indian), “Piras” (a bright, energetic young man), Ikerne (a young man from a village, modern and very healthy looking), Galder (a bit older than the others, a lost man), Zalba (the good-looking guy in the group and a surfer) and Estafanía (a young woman who is not the slightest bit interested in cooking but who has been forced to come by her parent, owners of a small restaurant). Juantxo, the teacher, is a big, grumpy, crazy, noisy bear-like man who can’t hide the fact that he’s gay however hard he tries. He is attempting to get some common sense into this team of layabouts but it’s going to be a hard job as problems are going to shower down on him as if from heaven.

As the Slavic proverb from Galicie says - “What you don’t tell your wife, or your best friend, tell a stranger in an inn”. And so, this is the story of Macário told in his own words to a stranger, a lady who was travelling with him en route to the Algarve, opening his heart and revealing the sorrow he endured for this fair-haired girl. As the story unfolds, we learn that this Macário was asked to be bookkeeper in his Uncle Francisco’s office; he takes his place at the writing-table in the office and begins his work and his worries. His intention is to tell this curious story. We are in present-day Lisbon, in Macário’s office from whose veranda can be seen the window of the house opposite where this unique, singular girl lives with her mother who is the first to appear at the window as the young Macário tells his story. The interesting thing is after the mother goes away, the singular girl, pretty and calm, appears at the same window ostentatiously fanning herself with a Chinese fan, which both surprises Macário and touches his heart.
